Not necessarily. There is no reliable universal percentage for how much of any course a learner remembers after one month. What you can recall depends on the subject, how well you learned it, what you have practiced since, and what you are asked to retrieve. The famous forgetting-curve figures are often used to imply a precise course-retention rate, but they come from a very different kind of task.
What the famous forgetting curve actually measures
A Pearson educational psychology chapter reproduces a figure attributed to Hermann Ebbinghaus (1885/1913): savings scores of 58% after 20 minutes, 44% after one hour, 34% after one day, 25% after six days, and 21% after 31 days. The participants learned nonsense syllables, not the material in a typical course. The figures are savings scores, a measure related to how much faster material can be relearned—not the percentage of course content directly remembered by every learner. They cannot establish that you have forgotten most of last month’s course. Read the Pearson chapter.
What course-retention studies can—and cannot—tell you
Consumer-behavior course knowledge
A 2006 longitudinal study by Donald R. Bacon and Kim A. Stewart tested students 8 to 101 weeks after a consumer-behavior course. Its abstract reports that most knowledge gained was lost within two years. That finding concerns one course domain and study; it does not give a one-month estimate for other courses or learners. See the study record.

Introductory mechanics concepts
A 2020 study examined retention of conceptual learning after an interactive introductory mechanics course, with assessments spanning 1 to 15 months. It provides a course-based example of retention being studied over time, but its reported result does not yield a single percentage that can be responsibly applied to every subject. Read the study.

These studies use different subject matter, learning settings, tests, and follow-up intervals. They are useful evidence that course retention can be measured, not a shared timetable that predicts what every student will remember next month.
Why some course material is easier to retrieve than other material
Remembering is not simply a matter of whether information remains somewhere in memory. The question format matters: recognizing a familiar explanation is different from producing it unaided. A learner may recognize a term when seeing it in notes yet struggle to define it without a prompt. Likewise, a course may include facts, procedures, and concepts that hold up differently when tested.

How the material was learned and used also matters. One-time exposure, repeated practice, and later attempts to recall information are not equivalent learning histories. So an ordinary feeling of “I can’t remember this right now” does not by itself show that an entire course has been lost.

How to improve the odds of remembering more
Retrieve before you reread
Close your notes and try to explain a concept, solve a problem, or list the key steps from memory. Then check what you missed and correct it. Retrieval practice means attempting to produce the answer from memory; rereading or recognizing the right answer is a different activity.

A review titled “Remembering What We Learn” describes a passage-learning experiment in which participants who read a passage four times forgot nearly half of the content they initially recalled after a week. Participants who read it once and took three tests during learning forgot about 14% of the content they had initially recalled. Those percentages apply to initially recalled content in that experiment, not to all learners or all course material. The review’s takeaway is that tests used for retrieval practice can slow forgetting and support long-term retention. Read the review.
Space practice over time
Instead of doing all practice in one sitting, return to material after time has passed. A 2022 study had 102 participants learn 40 German-Japanese vocabulary pairs using spacing intervals of 7.5 minutes, 4, 8, 12, or 24 hours, followed by tests after 24 hours and seven days. The study reported differences by condition; it is evidence that interval and outcome matter, not a universal timetable for every course. See the study record.

Use a study-specific schedule as a starting point, not a law
An ERIC-indexed 2011 study summarized three experiments involving 533 students learning conceptual material. Its authors recommended practicing recall to an initial criterion of three correct recalls, then relearning at widely spaced intervals. That is a recommendation drawn from those experiments, not a proven optimum for every subject or learner. Read the ERIC record.
Choose a format that makes retrieval easy
Prompts on paper, questions in a notebook, or flashcards can all make it easier to attempt recall before checking the answer. The format is optional; the useful feature is having to retrieve the answer rather than only looking at it. For a course with worked problems or connected ideas, practice questions and short explanations may fit better than isolated cards.

A practical way to check what you still know
- Pick a small topic. Choose one concept, process, or problem type from the course rather than trying to test the whole syllabus at once.
- Attempt recall without notes. Write an explanation, solve a representative problem, or list the steps you remember.
- Check against a reliable source. Compare your attempt with course materials and identify omissions or errors.
- Try again after a delay. Return to the same topic later and retrieve it again before reviewing. Adjust the delay and difficulty to the material and your results.
This gives you a more useful answer than applying one general forgetting percentage: it shows what you can retrieve now and where another round of practice may help.
