A September 2026 report says an influencer drank from a vessel he described as a vintage radium-water jug and called the water harmless and curative. Those are reported claims—not proof of what the vessel contained or whether anyone was exposed to radiation. The documented historical product Radithor, by contrast, was sold with stated radium content and was linked to severe injury and a 1931 Federal Trade Commission order.

What the Instagram report says—and what it does not establish

CBRN World reported on September 30, 2026, citing NewsGuard, that a September 24 video appeared on the Cultivate Elevate Instagram account. According to CBRN World’s account, Matt Roeske drank from what he described as a vintage 1920s radium-water jug and said radium water was “perfectly harmless” and could “heal every single ailment.” The report also reproduces the caption as “Radioactive Radium Water healing all in 1929.” CBRN World’s report

The wording matters: the available account describes what Roeske allegedly said about the liquid and vessel. It does not establish that the object was from the 1920s, that it contained radium, or that the liquid was radioactive. The original Instagram post was not independently authenticated in the available reporting, and no assay or radiation measurement for the vessel or liquid is reported. Its contents, activity, and any dose therefore remain unknown.

What Radithor was, and why it became infamous

Radithor was a historical patent medicine, not a modern product whose contents can be inferred from a similar-looking vessel. Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) says a half-ounce bottle was guaranteed to contain at least one microcurie each of radium-226 and radium-228. Manufacturer William J. Bailey offered $1,000 to anyone who could prove a bottle fell below that guarantee; ORAU says no one did. Each bottle sold for one dollar. ORAU’s Radithor history

Eben Byers’s case

ORAU reports that Eben Byers began drinking Radithor in December 1927 after an arm injury, averaging three bottles a day for about two years. His teeth began falling out in 1930. ORAU quotes Federal Trade Commission investigator Robert Winn’s account: “his whole upper jaw, excepting two front teeth, and most of his lower jaw had been removed. All the remaining bone tissue of his body was slowly disintegrating, and holes were actually forming in his skull.” Byers died in 1932.

The FTC order

On December 19, 1931, the FTC ordered Bailey Radium Laboratories to stop making therapeutic-value representations for Radithor and to stop representing the product as harmless. ORAU says Bailey did not contest the order after Byers testified. The order is a specific historical regulatory action against Radithor’s claims; it is not evidence about the untested modern vessel.

Is radium water safe to drink?

A claim that a liquid is “harmless” or can cure illness is not a safety test. “Radium water” in the Instagram report is the influencer’s description, not a verified laboratory finding. The reported video provides no confirmed radionuclide identification, activity measurement, or exposure assessment for the liquid.

The EPA explains that radionuclides are radioactive forms of elements, each with a characteristic half-life; some occur naturally and others are human-made or produced by nuclear reactions. That general description does not identify the contents of this vessel or establish an exposure. EPA: Radionuclides

  • DO-IT-YOURSELF screening of any freshwater supply for Arsenic (tap water, well water, ponds, lakes, streams etc.). Arsenic occurs naturally in the earth's crust, is found in more than 50% of U.S. water supplies and can cause organ-cancer in humans and animals.
  • PATENT PENDING DIY TECHNOLOGIES indicate Arsenic concentration ranges of 0 - 500 PPB.
  • CERTIFIED “ACCURATE” by EPA-certified scientists with over 150 years of combined experience in testing drinking water. 10 PPB is the USEPA’s Maximum Contamination Level for Arsenic in drinking water. However, no amount of Arsenic is safe to consume.
  • FAST RESULTS: At-home screening delivers your test results in just 30 minutes. Unlike most other DIY kits, this kit tests without messy test strips. Includes detailed instructions. One test per kit. NOTE: Testing for Arsenic at a lab can cost hundreds of dollars, making this kit a cost-effective at-home option to screen for Arsenic.
  • OPTIONAL TESTING AT OUR EPA-CERTIFIED LAB: Inside this same package is a second kit that provides everything needed to collect a water sample and send it to our EPA-certified lab for professional analysis. You have multiple testing packages to choose from, for up to 48 different parameters (see attached list). *Note: Fees are required for optional testing at our EPA-certified lab.

Radium, radioactivity, and radiation dose are related but not interchangeable terms: identifying a radioactive substance is different from measuring its activity, and neither alone states what dose a person received. Because the modern vessel’s contents and any dose are unverified in the cited account, the evidence does not support a conclusion about what exposure occurred. It also gives no basis for treating the influencer’s health claims as established.
