El hashing de Zobrist representa una posición de ajedrez mediante una clave compacta que puede calcularse y actualizarse con operaciones XOR. Sigue siendo útil porque permite a un motor identificar rápidamente posiciones para reutilizar información de búsqueda, aunque la clave no garantiza por sí sola que dos posiciones sean idénticas.
Qué es el hashing de Zobrist
Una posición de ajedrez se puede describir mediante rasgos: qué pieza ocupa cada casilla, a quién le toca mover, si hay derechos de enroque y si existe una captura al paso disponible. El hashing de Zobrist asigna un valor pseudoaleatorio a cada rasgo y combina los valores correspondientes mediante XOR para producir una clave.
La operación XOR permite añadir o retirar un rasgo de la clave aplicando de nuevo su valor. Por eso, un motor puede actualizar el hash al hacer una jugada en vez de volver a procesar desde cero toda la posición. La clave sirve como una representación práctica del estado, no como una descripción legible de la partida.
Cómo lo maneja Stockfish
El código oficial de Stockfish muestra claves asociadas a pieza y casilla, al turno, a los derechos de enroque y a la posibilidad de captura al paso. Al configurar una posición, el motor combina los valores pertinentes con XOR; también mantiene información de estado al ejecutar movimientos.

Stockfish dispone además de claves auxiliares para aspectos como peones y material, y emplea hashes Zobrist en tablas cuckoo para detectar posiciones repetidas. Estas son decisiones de esa implementación; no definen una configuración obligatoria para todos los motores. Entre implementaciones pueden variar los rasgos incluidos, el tamaño de la clave, el uso de actualizaciones incrementales y la forma de comprobar coincidencias.
Por qué sigue siendo útil en ajedrez
Durante una búsqueda, una misma posición puede aparecer por distintas secuencias de jugadas. Una tabla de transposición permite guardar información de una posición ya examinada y consultarla si vuelve a surgir, evitando repetir parte del trabajo. Una clave hash compacta facilita indexar esos datos con rapidez.

El informe de Zobrist trataba el método como una técnica para programas de juegos de tablero; el código actual de Stockfish ofrece un ejemplo concreto de su continuidad en un motor de ajedrez. Su utilidad práctica está en hacer más eficiente la representación y consulta del estado, no en otorgar una identidad matemática infalible a cada posición.

Una clave hash es una salida compacta y las colisiones son posibles en principio: dos estados distintos podrían producir el mismo valor. Por ello, una coincidencia de hash no debe describirse como prueba garantizada de que las posiciones sean idénticas. El artículo de Zobrist también expone un método auxiliar para detectar errores de recuperación y señala que su tasa de error puede controlarse según el espacio asignado; no establece aquí una tasa universal que pueda atribuirse a los motores actuales.

El rendimiento y el riesgo práctico dependen de decisiones de implementación, como el tamaño de la clave, la memoria reservada para las tablas y las comprobaciones adicionales. La nota editorial de la publicación de ICGA fecha el trabajo de Albert L. Zobrist como Technical Report #88 del Departamento de Ciencias de la Computación de la Universidad de Wisconsin-Madison, de abril de 1970. La misma nota indica que el método se refinó en 1971 para subconjuntos del tablero de ajedrez en el programa Zobrist-Carlson-Kalme. El registro disponible es una reimpresión publicada el 1 de junio de 1990, no el informe original: “A New Hashing Method with Application for Game Playing”.
Cómo explorar el ejemplo sin confundir motor y aplicación
Stockfish es un motor UCI gratuito que analiza posiciones y calcula jugadas. No incluye una interfaz gráfica: para jugar o interactuar visualmente se necesita una GUI independiente. Su repositorio está bajo GPL v3; al redistribuir el programa se deben cumplir los requisitos de licencia y proporcionar el código fuente o un puntero al código que genera el binario. Las modificaciones distribuidas también deben publicarse bajo GPL v3.
