It is not confirmed. TIME said in April 2025 that Donald Trump had appeared on its cover 46 times, tying Ronald Reagan and trailing Richard Nixon’s record of 55. A report published October 1, 2026 claims Trump has since reached 56, but TIME confirmation of that new total was not located. The present-tense claim that Trump is now ahead therefore remains unverified.
What TIME’s published counts show
The clearest directly reported comparison comes from TIME itself. In its April 25, 2025 article about the cover accompanying an interview with Trump, TIME called it his 46th cover appearance and said that matched Reagan’s total. TIME described both presidents as second only to Richard Nixon.
TIME’s centennial retrospective identifies Nixon as the record-holder with 55 cover appearances. Those figures are from different publication dates, so they establish the ranking TIME reported in 2025—not a simultaneous count of every person’s appearances today.
| Person | Published count | When and who reported it |
|---|---|---|
| Richard Nixon | 55 | TIME’s centennial retrospective, published in 2023 and updated in 2026 |
| Donald Trump | 46 | TIME, April 25, 2025; TIME said this tied Reagan’s total |
| Ronald Reagan | 46 | TIME, April 25, 2025 |
Why a report says Trump may have passed Nixon
A Breitbart report published October 1, 2026 claims Trump appeared on a TIME cover dated that day for the 56th time, which would put him one ahead of Nixon’s published total. That claim is not confirmed by the TIME material available here. Until TIME verifies the appearance and counting, it should be treated as a third-party report rather than an established change to the record.

How Trump’s count changed over time
TIME creative director D.W. Pine wrote that Trump’s total stood at 43 in an article updated in December 2024. TIME then reported 46 in April 2025. This illustrates why any answer to “Who has appeared most?” needs a date: cover totals can change as new issues are published.
What can—and cannot—be concluded
- TIME’s last directly retrieved comparison: In April 2025, Trump was tied with Reagan at 46 and behind Nixon at 55.
- Possible later change: The October 1, 2026 Breitbart report claims Trump reached 56, but an official TIME confirmation was not located.
- Counting method: The cited material does not establish whether regional editions or cover variants count separately, so the totals should be understood as the figures reported by the cited sources.
Accordingly, the headline’s superlative cannot be stated as confirmed on the available evidence: TIME’s verified published account leaves Nixon ahead, while a later third-party report claims Trump may have overtaken him.
