Not on the evidence available. Apple has entered the budget-laptop tier with the MacBook Neo, but launch details and analyst forecasts do not show that it has taken market share from Windows laptops or Chromebooks. The key question is whether buyers in a large, price-sensitive segment switch to Mac in significant numbers—and dated post-launch shipment or sales data would be needed to answer that.
What does “budget laptop market” mean here?
For this question, the clearest benchmark is notebooks priced below $700. IDC estimated that tier at about 75 million units—nearly 40% of total notebook volume—and said Windows and ChromeOS together accounted for more than 95% of its shipments. These are IDC estimates from its March 30, 2026 analysis, not a live count of current sales.
That makes the opportunity substantial, but it also sets a high bar for the word “stolen.” A lower-priced Mac entering the segment is competition; it is not proof that buyers have switched away from incumbent platforms.
What did Apple launch?
Apple announced the 13-inch MacBook Neo in March 2026 as an entry-level Mac. The Associated Press reported launch configurations with an A18 Pro chip, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of base storage. It reported two USB-C ports, a $599 US launch price for the 256GB model, and a $699 launch price for a 512GB model with Touch ID. AP also reported a $100 education discount at launch.

Those prices are historical US launch prices, not verified October 2026 street prices. Prices, configurations, and education offers can vary by market and change over time, so a buyer should check Apple’s current product page and local retailers before comparing costs.
Why the Neo could challenge Windows laptops and Chromebooks
The Neo gives buyers who want macOS a lower-priced entry point than Apple’s higher-tier notebooks. IDC identified students, first-time notebook buyers, education institutions, and small and midsize businesses as plausible audiences. The Neo could appeal where the budget allows for a Mac and the buyer values Apple’s operating system, ecosystem, or build experience.

IDC analyst Nabila Popal, Senior Director of Data & Analytics, characterized the segment this way: “Buyers in the sub $700 notebook segment are overwhelmingly not current Mac users, nor are they making decisions through a spec-driven lens.” That is her analysis of the market, not a reported consumer survey result. It points to a potential opening: Apple may be competing for buyers who previously did not consider a Mac, but their decision may depend on the overall experience and price rather than a specification sheet alone.

What the forecasts say—and what they do not
TrendForce forecast that Apple’s notebook shipments would grow 7.7% year over year in 2026 and that macOS would reach a 13.2% share. It also forecast 4–5 million MacBook Neo shipments for the year, depending on consumer acceptance of the 8GB memory configuration. TrendForce published these forecasts on March 5, 2026; they are expectations, not confirmed shipment results.

Those projections indicate that analysts saw room for Apple’s notebook business to grow. They do not establish that the Neo caused growth, that it displaced Windows or ChromeOS devices, or that Apple captured a durable share of the sub-$700 segment. A measured answer requires newer shipment or sell-through data with a clear period, geography, price band, and definition of whether the figure tracks vendors, operating systems, or both.
Where the Neo may fall short of a budget buyer’s needs
A low starting price does not make a laptop the right value for every workload. IDC’s comparison with MacBook Air described the Neo as having less performance headroom and limits that include external multi-display support. That matters for buyers who run demanding applications, keep a laptop for many years, or rely on multiple external monitors.

The reported launch configuration also pairs 8GB of RAM with 256GB of base storage. Whether that is sufficient depends on the buyer’s applications, files, and expected ownership period. A person who mainly browses, writes, streams, or uses cloud-based school tools may have different needs from someone working with large creative projects or several demanding apps at once.

How to compare the Neo with a Windows laptop or Chromebook
There is no single best budget laptop for everyone, and current prices and specifications vary by country and retailer. Compare the exact models available in your market on these points before deciding:

- Total price: Compare the price after any education discount, taxes, and required accessories—not just the advertised starting price.
- Operating system and apps: Check that your school, workplace, or preferred software supports macOS, Windows, or ChromeOS as needed.
- Memory and storage: Match RAM and storage to your workload, file sizes, and expected time before replacement.
- Performance headroom: Consider the applications you use now and whether your workload is likely to become more demanding.
- Display and build: Assess screen size and quality, keyboard and trackpad, portability, and construction in the specific model.
- Battery life: Look for credible tests of the exact configuration under conditions similar to your use; do not assume a brand-wide figure applies to every model.
- Ports and external displays: Verify the number and type of ports, and whether the laptop supports the monitor setup you need.
- Education pricing and ownership needs: Confirm eligibility and current terms, then weigh repair, support, and expected useful life against the purchase price.
So, has Apple stolen the market?
The MacBook Neo gives Apple a credible new competitor in a segment long dominated by Windows and ChromeOS, but the available evidence does not show that it has stolen that market. IDC’s figures describe the segment’s scale and incumbent mix; TrendForce’s figures are forecasts. Neither supplies verified post-launch proof of displacement. The defensible conclusion is that Apple has made a serious entry into budget laptops, while its effect on competitors remains unproven.
