Yes. The U.S. Senate confirmed Harry Coker, Jr., as National Cyber Director on December 12, 2023, by a vote of 59–40, with one senator not voting. Coker later resigned; the Senate confirmed Sean Cairncross as his successor on August 2, 2025. The headline describes the 2023 confirmation, not the current officeholder.

How the Senate confirmed Harry Coker

What the National Cyber Director does

The Office of the National Cyber Director was established in 2021 to support a coordinated, whole-of-government approach to cybersecurity. During Senate consideration of Coker’s nomination, Senator Gary Peters described the role this way: “The National Cyber Director is responsible for driving cyber security policy and strategy all across the Federal Government.” Read the December 12, 2023, Congressional Record.

Who replaced Coker

Coker resigned from the office. The committee’s later nomination record identifies Sean Cairncross as nominated “vice Harry Coker, Jr., resigned” and records Cairncross’s confirmation on August 2, 2025. See the committee’s Cairncross nomination record.
