Iron Mountain says hard drives from the 1990s are failing at rates over 20%. That is the company’s stated figure—not a measured failure rate for every 1990s drive or a demonstrated industry-wide statistic. Its accessible page does not disclose the sample, denominator, measurement date, or method behind the claim.
The warning matters especially for music archives, where a drive can be inaccessible because of aging hardware, obsolete connections or software, or labels too sparse to identify its contents. A drive that powers on is not necessarily readable; an unreadable drive is not necessarily beyond recovery.
What Iron Mountain’s 20% figure does—and does not—say
Iron Mountain’s heritage-preservation page states: “Hard drives from the 1990s are failing at rates over 20%.” The accessible page does not explain how that figure was calculated or what set of drives it represents. It should therefore be treated as the firm’s warning, not as a statistic that applies to every old drive or to drives worldwide. As of 2026, those drives are roughly three decades old. Iron Mountain’s heritage-preservation page describes its work with archival material but supplies no visible methodology for this figure.

The reporting that gives the warning context focuses on music archives. It does not quantify how much music or how many projects are at risk, and it does not establish that all archived drives—or all drives from the 1990s—are failing.

Why a drive can be inaccessible even if it powers on
Access depends on more than whether a disk spins up. Reporting on the music industry identifies several possible obstacles:
- Failed hardware: A drive can stop working even when it appears to have been stored carefully. Complex reported that two drives associated with one project were unusable despite being kept in cases.
- Outdated connections or power: Older drives may require proprietary cables or power adapters that are no longer readily available.
- Legacy software: Files can depend on old software or plug-ins that are difficult to run or replace.
- Unclear metadata: A disk with incomplete or ambiguous labels may be hard to identify, even if its contents can be read.
These barriers are not interchangeable. A connection problem does not prove that a drive has suffered physical damage, and the available reporting does not show that every unreadable drive can be recovered. TechSpot’s report on the archive-drive problem describes the legacy-media, software, and identification challenges, as well as Iron Mountain’s specialist reading equipment.

Why music archivists are concerned
Archived drives can hold recordings, project sessions, and related material—not only tracks that were eventually released. Such files may preserve creative work or production details that cannot simply be recreated from a finished release. The reports describe the concern but do not estimate the volume of material threatened.

Complex’s September 16, 2024 report covers the archivists’ concern.

What to do if you have an old drive
Choose the next step based on the drive’s condition, the connection information you can establish, and the importance of its contents. An adapter may address a connection mismatch; it cannot fix a mechanically or electronically failed drive.
- If it operates normally and the contents matter, identify the drive before connecting it. Check for interface and power information, then use an adapter only if it matches both. The cited reporting identifies obsolete cables and power supplies as possible barriers but does not validate a particular adapter or connector type.
- If it behaves abnormally or contains irreplaceable material, consider specialist assessment. Iron Mountain says its specialists use equipment that can read different storage media when platters remain undamaged. That capability is not a promise that any particular drive or file can be recovered.
- If the contents are readable, preserve them in an accessible form and retain identifying information. Clear labels and metadata help establish what files are and where they belong; the reports identify poor identification as a problem in archive work.
Iron Mountain describes storage, digitization, restoration, and long-term access services on its heritage-preservation page. The cited material does not compare recovery providers or establish a guaranteed outcome for a specific drive.

How to interpret the warning
The sound conclusion is neither that every 1990s drive is dead nor that careful storage makes an old drive safe indefinitely. Iron Mountain’s figure is a company claim whose underlying population and method are not visible on its accessible page. The music-archive reporting shows why preservation is more than monitoring drive status: hardware, cables, software, metadata, and specialist access all affect whether old material remains usable.
