Happen Bank is an online-only bank with LevelUp Checking, LevelUp Savings and certificates of deposit. Its savings rate is conditional: Happen’s disclosure lists 4.20% APY when at least $250 in qualifying deposits arrives during a statement cycle, versus 3.00% APY otherwise, both accurate September 22, 2026. Checking rewards also depend on eligibility and transaction rules, while CDs require at least $500 and lock money for a chosen term. This review explains the conditions, costs and access tradeoffs to weigh before opening an account.
What is Happen Bank?
Happen Bank is the digital banking brand of Happen, Inc. The company announced on July 27, 2026, that it had rebranded from LendingClub and described that quarter as its first operating under the Happen Bank name. Older references to LendingClub’s deposit accounts may therefore describe the predecessor brand, not a separate bank. In the company’s release, CEO Scott Sanborn called the rebrand a sign of “forward momentum”; that is the company’s characterization, not an independent assessment. Happen, Inc. results release
The consumer lineup includes LevelUp Checking, LevelUp Savings and CDs. Happen says checking and savings have no minimum opening deposit; CDs require $500. The bank operates online rather than through branches, so customers should consider how they will handle in-person banking needs.
How does LevelUp Savings work?
Happen’s product disclosure lists a 4.20% APY LevelUp Rate when at least $250 in qualifying deposits arrives during an Evaluation Period, and a 3.00% APY Standard Rate when the deposit test is not met. Both rates were accurate September 22, 2026, are variable and may change without notice. When the test is met, the LevelUp rate applies to the full balance. Happen Bank deposit account disclosures

An Evaluation Period is a statement cycle. A new account initially receives the LevelUp Rate through its first evaluation period; after that, any rate change takes effect in the statement cycle after Happen evaluates deposits. To keep qualifying for the higher rate, plan on a recurring deposit habit rather than treating the APY as unconditional.
What counts toward the $250?
Qualifying deposits exclude interest payments, account bonuses, account credits, and bank reversals or refunds. Check the account terms for the current definition and timing before relying on a deposit to meet the threshold.

Why do Happen pages show different savings rates?
The official marketing page reviewed displays a 4.00% APY headline in one place, while its dated footnote and the product disclosure specify 4.20% APY. The disclosure also gives the 3.00% Standard Rate. Because the figures conflict and rates can change, confirm the live rate and account terms before opening; do not assume the headline alone reflects the applicable rate. What does LevelUp Checking offer?
LevelUp Checking offers cash back on qualifying debit purchases and certain Happen personal-loan payments, but the benefit is not a blanket cash-back rate on every purchase. Happen’s product page says eligible loan payments must come from an eligible account with direct deposit, be paid electronically and on time, and match the monthly payment amount; some Happen loan products are excluded. Early direct deposit, where available, depends on the payer supporting it. Happen Bank deposit account disclosures

NerdWallet’s review, last updated February 12, 2026, reports that 1% cash back applies to some signature-based grocery, gas and pharmacy transactions and requires at least one monthly direct deposit. It also reports 1.00% APY on checking balances with a $2,500 minimum balance for interest. These are secondary-review details, not a substitute for current bank terms; verify the eligibility rules and rate with Happen before deciding. NerdWallet’s Happen Bank review
What fees and access limitations should you consider?
Happen’s legal deposit terms list a $0 opening deposit and $0 monthly maintenance fee for checking. They also state that there is no bank fee for using SUM or MoneyPass network ATMs and that out-of-network ATM owner fees are rebated without a stated limit. International ATM fee rebates may not apply automatically. Happen deposit account agreement

- No branches: NerdWallet describes Happen as having no branch access. Do not expect teller service or branch-based cash deposits. NerdWallet’s Happen Bank review
- No overdraft program: NerdWallet also reports that the bank has no overdraft program. If you need a bank to cover transactions that exceed your available balance, confirm current account handling and consider that limitation. NerdWallet’s Happen Bank review
- ATM access: Network access and out-of-network fee rebates can help with cash withdrawals, but they do not provide branch service or establish that cash can be deposited.
Happen Bank CD rates and terms
Happen’s rate page lists the following CD APYs as accurate September 22, 2026. These are dated snapshots, not guaranteed rates for a future application; the rate available when the account opens may differ. Happen Bank deposit account disclosures

The minimum opening deposit is $500 and the maximum is $500,000. Fees may reduce earnings, and an early-withdrawal penalty may apply. CDs automatically renew at the then-offered rate when the initial term ends, so review the maturity notice and renewal terms if you do not want to continue at the new rate. Read the current CD agreement for the exact penalty and renewal mechanics before opening.

How to choose a term
- Compare the rate available on the day you open, not just this dated schedule.
- Choose a maturity date that fits when you may need the money; withdrawing early can incur a penalty.
- Check the opening minimum, maximum, fees, renewal process and any notice period in the current agreement.
How does FDIC insurance apply?
Checking, savings and CD deposits are eligible deposit products at an insured bank. The standard FDIC limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. Accounts in the same ownership category at the same bank are aggregated; opening several Happen accounts does not create a separate $250,000 limit for each one. Review balances across your accounts and ownership categories when estimating coverage. FDIC deposit insurance information
How does Happen compare as an online bank?
NerdWallet’s Happen Bank review, last updated February 12, 2026, gives the bank an overall rating of 4.7 and identifies no monthly fees, ATM fee rebates and competitive savings and CD rates as positives. It lists no branch access and no overdraft program as drawbacks. NerdWallet discloses that many or all products on its page may come from partners that compensate it for clicks or actions, while stating that compensation does not influence its ratings. Treat that rating as NerdWallet’s assessment, not a personal test of the account or a guarantee of current terms. NerdWallet’s Happen Bank review
Happen is most compelling for customers comfortable with digital-only service who can meet the savings deposit condition and do not need branch or overdraft access. The main decision points are whether you can sustain the qualifying deposit, whether checking rewards match your actual spending and payment behavior, and whether a CD’s term fits your liquidity needs.
