Xbox’s redesigned PC app, in an early preview codenamed Garrison, feels noticeably quicker to Windows Central’s Jez Corden when loading a large game library. That impression, published October 9, 2026, is the only performance evidence so far. No controlled benchmark has been published, and Xbox has not announced a release date for the redesign.
What the hands-on report actually says
The report is Jez Corden’s first-hand account, published by Windows Central on October 9, 2026 under the headline “Hands-on — Xbox’s brand new PC app offers BIG performance improvements.” Corden tested the preview with a personal Xbox library of more than 1,400 titles. His view that the app loads faster than the previous version is a subjective judgment from using it, not a measured result.
That distinction matters for how the headline should be read. The article does not report load times, frame rates, memory use, or time saved. It does not compare the old and new apps side by side under identical conditions. The “1,400+” figure describes how many games are in the author’s library; it is not a performance statistic.

Readers should treat the “big performance boost” wording as an impression that Corden formed while navigating a very large catalog. The report points to library loading as the most noticeable difference, but it does not say how much of that is due to a faster rendering path, a leaner interface, or lighter data loading. Until someone publishes measured results on a defined machine, hardware configuration, and library size, the size of the improvement is unknown.

Because the preview is early, the app may also change before release. Any speed comparison made today describes one preview build tested by one reviewer.
Install status and navigation
Beyond speed, the report highlights two usability changes:

- Clearer install status. The preview makes it easier to see which games are installed on the device and which can only be streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming. For a library that mixes local and cloud titles, this is the difference between a game that starts immediately and one that depends on a connection.
- Combined store and game listings. Store pages and owned-game pages are brought together in one interface rather than split across separate views. Corden describes this as streamlined navigation, though he does not give a click count or step reduction.
The report describes few new features at this stage. Its emphasis is on how the app is organized and how quickly it responds, not on added functions.
Mouse, keyboard, and controller layouts
The preview supports two input layouts: one for mouse and keyboard, and one for a controller. Corden says the app can be set as the default home screen when a PC enters Windows 11 Game Mode. He calls the controller layout ideal for controller-scaled use on a device such as the Xbox Ally, a Windows handheld.

A Windows-compatible Xbox controller fits that controller layout, but it is optional. Nothing in the report suggests a controller is required to use the app, and nothing suggests a controller makes the app run faster. A desktop user with a keyboard and mouse gets the other layout.
How this differs from Xbox mode
The new app preview and Xbox mode are separate things that are easy to confuse. Xbox mode is an existing Windows experience that Microsoft began rolling out on April 30, 2026. The table below compares the two using only what each source states.

|---|---|---|
| Current status | Early preview, codenamed Garrison, per Windows Central (October 9, 2026) | Gradual rollout in select markets to Windows 11 laptops, desktops, and tablets, announced by Xbox Wire (April 30, 2026) |
| Official release date | Not stated by Xbox or Microsoft; the author expects Xbox Insiders could receive it “in the coming weeks” | Rollout already underway in supported markets |
| Windows requirement | Not stated in the preview report | Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, per Microsoft Support |
| Input focus | Separate mouse-and-keyboard and controller layouts | Controller-optimized full-screen experience, per Microsoft |
| Library scope | Shows which titles are installed and which are cloud-only | Aggregated library including the Game Pass catalog and installed games from leading PC storefronts, per Xbox Wire |
| Performance evidence | Author’s hands-on impression only; no benchmark published | Microsoft’s handheld startup and battery claims are general statements, not measurements of the preview |
Handheld startup behavior
Microsoft Support describes an option to start a gaming handheld directly into Xbox mode. When enabled, it limits background processes to improve gaming performance, and the support page says reducing startup activity can also improve battery life. These are Microsoft’s general claims about Xbox mode. They are not measurements of the redesigned app, and the preview report does not connect the two.
Anyone deciding how to set up a handheld should keep these as separate questions: the startup option is a configuration choice in Xbox mode, while the app’s loading behavior is a separate, unmeasured impression.

The handheld and hardware context
Corden’s suggestion that the Xbox Ally suits the controller layout refers to a Windows handheld, and the ROG Xbox Ally is the named example. Xbox Wire described the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X as available for purchase in its October 30, 2025 update. That statement is dated and does not establish current stock or pricing. The redesigned app is aimed at Windows PCs in general, so a desktop or laptop without a handheld can still use the mouse-and-keyboard layout.
What to watch next
- An official Xbox or Microsoft announcement giving a release date, or confirming Insider availability. Until then, the “coming weeks” timing is Corden’s expectation, not a schedule.
- Independent measurements of library loading on named hardware, with a stated library size and the previous app as the baseline.
- Whether the install-versus-cloud labeling and combined store and game listings survive into a public build.
- Whether Xbox mode’s supported-market and Windows 11 24H2 requirements change for the new app, which the preview report does not address.
Until those points are settled, the most accurate summary is this: an early preview appears faster when loading a large library, the install and cloud status is clearer, and the navigation is simpler. How much faster, and when most players will get it, are open questions.
