The 2012 Windows RT demonstration on Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 hardware showed a touch-friendly Windows interface running on an ARM-based development tablet—but it was not a review of a finished retail device. Reports described a smooth interface alongside playback and touch problems, and the accounts did not establish battery life or benchmark performance. The demo hardware should also be kept distinct from later Samsung and Dell tablets, and from Microsoft’s Surface RT, which used a different processor.

What the Windows RT and Snapdragon S4 demo was

Windows RT was the ARM-compatible edition of Windows 8. At Computex in June 2012, reporters saw it running on Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 development or reference hardware. This was an early preview, not a test of a retail tablet or the final shipping experience.

The system presented both the touch-oriented Metro interface and a desktop UI. Qualcomm staff manager of marketing PJ Jacobowitz wrote that only Microsoft’s core applications were available to try and that third-party apps would run only in Metro. He described the apps and pinch-to-zoom as fast, but that is a vendor employee’s personal hands-on impression, not an independent performance test. Qualcomm’s June 2012 account

What hardware the reporters used

The two contemporaneous hands-on reports identify the development hardware differently. Those identifiers belong to their respective accounts; they should not be collapsed into a single verified retail specification.

Account Reported hardware What the account describes
Engadget, June 5, 2012 Dual-core 1.5GHz APQ8060A; 2GB RAM Qualcomm S4 development tablet demonstrated at Computex in Taipei.
Computerworld / IDG News Service, June 5, 2012 Dual-core 1.5GHz MSM8960; 2GB RAM Reference tablet running the Windows 8 Release Preview.

Engadget also observed Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity, GPS in Bing Maps, SkyDrive photo sharing, and the game Vendetta Online running alongside other apps. These are observations of the demonstration setup, not a complete specification for every S4 Windows RT tablet.

What the hands-on reports actually found

The reports did not produce one uniform verdict. Qualcomm’s employee account and Engadget described responsive software, while Computerworld recorded problems on the reference unit. Both kinds of observation matter, but neither establishes how all finished products would perform.

Microsoft Surface RT (32GB)
  • Windows RT 8.1, 10.6-Inch ClearType HD Display
  • Quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3

Responsive interface and apps

Engadget characterized the experience as responsive and described the demo activities above. Computerworld reported that Metro tiles moved smoothly and Internet Explorer 10 handled a graphics-heavy New York Times page over the available 3G connection. Jacobowitz likewise said the core Microsoft apps “all flew,” while identifying himself as a Qualcomm employee sharing a personal opinion.

Video stalling and repeated gestures

Computerworld reported that local 1080p video playback stuttered to a halt after about 20 seconds and that some touch gestures had to be repeated. Qualcomm said the reference unit still needed hardware and software optimization. Those are observations on one unfinished show-floor unit, not a controlled comparison or proof that every later tablet had the same problems.

No battery-life or benchmark result

Engadget reported that Qualcomm had no battery-life or benchmark numbers to share. The short demonstrations therefore cannot substantiate a battery-life claim or establish comparative performance. A separate Qualcomm executive comment quoted by Computerworld—that heat is wasted energy—was a general statement about processor efficiency, not a measurement of this tablet.

Which retail Windows RT tablets used Snapdragon S4?

Qualcomm’s August 2012 announcement named the Samsung ATIV Tab and Dell XPS 10 as 10-inch Windows RT tablets powered by Snapdragon S4. This later announcement is evidence of named products, not a reason to treat the June development tablet as a shipping model.

Why Surface RT is not the Snapdragon demo tablet

Microsoft’s Surface with Windows RT was a separate product. Its October 2012 specification announcement lists an NVIDIA T30 processor and 2GB RAM—not Qualcomm Snapdragon S4. The Surface’s processor and launch pricing should not be attributed to the S4 development unit or the Samsung and Dell tablets.

How to read the 2012 evidence

  • Development hardware is not a retail specification. The APQ8060A and MSM8960 labels come from different reports on reference or development hardware.
  • A preview is not a final-product review. Computerworld identified the software as the Windows 8 Release Preview, and Qualcomm said its reference unit still needed optimization.
  • Show-floor impressions are not benchmarks. Smooth navigation, a video stall, or a gesture retry are useful descriptions of what reporters saw, but they do not establish population-wide performance.
  • Keep source perspective visible. Qualcomm’s employee account is vendor-authored; Engadget and Computerworld provide contemporaneous reporting. None of these accounts is a controlled head-to-head test.

Qualcomm had announced Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 Windows on ARM test PCs for developers in February 2012. Microsoft’s Windows Division business-planning director Stefan Kinnestrand said the tools and test PCs would help developers build and test Metro-style apps for Windows on ARM. That announcement describes developer support, not a consumer-device launch. Qualcomm’s February 2012 developer-hardware announcement
