Start with Halo: The Fall of Reach by Eric Nylund, then read The Flood, First Strike and Ghosts of Onyx. Halo Studios lists those as the original four Halo novels, in release order. The first, published October 30, 2001, came out before Halo: Combat Evolved. From there, follow a connected series that matches your interests rather than treating the guide as a complete in-universe timeline.

Read the first four Halo novels in publication order

Halo Studios’ Official Halo Book Guide identifies these four as the original novels and gives their release dates and descriptions.

Order Book Author and publication date What it covers
1 Halo: The Fall of Reach Eric Nylund — October 30, 2001 Master Chief’s origins, the SPARTAN-II program, the fall of Reach and events leading to the discovery of Halo.
2 Halo: The Flood William C. Dietz — April 1, 2003 A novelization of Halo: Combat Evolved, with additional UNSC, Covenant and other perspectives.
3 Halo: First Strike Eric Nylund — December 2, 2003 After Combat Evolved, Master Chief, Cortana, Avery Johnson and other survivors seek to return to Earth.
4 Halo: Ghosts of Onyx Eric Nylund — October 31, 2006 The SPARTAN-III program, Kurt-051, Dr. Halsey and the mysterious planet Onyx.

This sequence is a practical starting path, not a claim that every later book must be read in one long release-date list. The official guide groups many novels by connected series, which makes those strands useful next steps.

Choose what to read after the starter sequence

Pick a strand by subject or characters, and read its books in the listed internal order. The publication dates below are those given by Halo Studios.

Forerunner history

Read Greg Bear’s Forerunner Saga as Cryptum (January 4, 2011), Primordium (January 3, 2012) and Silentium (March 19, 2013). The trilogy explores ancient Forerunner history and leads toward the firing of the Halo Array.

Postwar politics and Gray Team

The Kilo-Five trilogy follows Glasslands (October 25, 2011), The Thursday War (October 2, 2012) and Mortal Dictata (January 21, 2014), set in the immediate aftermath of the Covenant War and after Halo 3. For a separate Gray Team strand, read The Cole Protocol (November 25, 2008) before Envoy (April 25, 2017).

Master Chief and Blue Team

Follow Silent Storm (September 4, 2018), Oblivion (September 24, 2019) and Shadows of Reach (October 20, 2020). Silent Storm is set in the first year of the Covenant War; the later books continue Blue Team stories.

Where stand-alone stories and anthologies fit

If you want a particular era, character or format rather than a multi-book strand, Halo Studios also lists stand-alone stories and short-story collections. Options include Contact Harvest, Broken Circle, Hunters in the Dark, Saint’s Testimony, Shadow of Intent, Legacy of Onyx, Outcasts, Epitaph, Empty Throne, Evolutions and Fractures. These do not need to be inserted into the first-four sequence to make that starting path work.

Is publication order the same as chronological order?

No. Publication order follows release dates; in-universe chronology follows when events happen in the setting. Halo Studios’ guide supplies dates, summaries and series groupings, but it is not a complete official timeline for every novel and anthology story. Use the sequence above if you want a release-order entry point, and treat a chronological reading list as a separate undertaking rather than inferring it from the guide’s series headings.

What is the latest Halo book listed?

As of October 7, 2026, Halo Studios lists Halo: Waypoint Chronicles – Volume One by Jeff Easterling and Alexander Wakeford as the latest book, released May 26, 2026. The guide describes it as an anthology of over thirty short stories from across the setting, including twenty-four adventures previously available online and ten new tales exclusive to the volume, as well as lore items and vignettes connected to Halo Infinite. It lists trade paperback, ebook and unabridged audiobook formats. Because it is an anthology spanning the setting rather than a first novel in a continuous story, it is better suited as a sampler than as the clearest first step.
