A hair transplant can move hair into thinning or bald areas, but it does not stop the rest of your hair from thinning. Whether surgery is appropriate depends on the cause of hair loss, the amount of healthy donor hair, scalp and general health, and realistic expectations. FUE and FUT both leave scars, discomfort can occur during recovery, and visible regrowth takes months. A qualified clinician should assess your hair loss and explain a plan suited to you.

Am I a good candidate for a hair transplant?

Suitability depends on more than how much hair has been lost. A clinician should first identify the cause and pattern of the loss. The NHS guidance on hair transplants says surgery is generally for permanent, familial-pattern baldness and is not usually suitable for other forms of hair loss, such as alopecia areata. If the cause is uncertain, seek a dermatologic evaluation before considering surgery.

The American Academy of Dermatology and Cleveland Clinic identify several factors a clinician may assess:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Donor supply: There needs to be enough healthy hair in the donor area to move.
  • Recipient-area potential: The thinning area must be capable of growing hair.
  • Health and scalp condition: General health and scalp health can affect whether surgery is appropriate.
  • Stability and expectations: A clinician may consider whether hair loss has stabilized, including whether medical treatment has helped, and whether the likely result matches your expectations.

There is no single age or graft-count cutoff established by these sources. A personal assessment is more useful than a rule of thumb.

What is the difference between FUE and FUT?

Both methods move hair follicles from a donor area, usually at the back of the head, to a thinning or bald area. Their main difference is how the donor hair is removed—and the resulting scar pattern.

Method How donor hair is taken Typical scar pattern Shaving described by NHS
FUT (follicular unit transplantation) A strip of scalp is removed and closed with stitches. A linear donor-site scar; it may show if the hair is very short. Usually only the donor-strip area is trimmed.
FUE (follicular unit extraction) Individual grafts are removed one by one. Multiple small donor-site scars, often less noticeable than a linear scar. The back of the head is shaved.

The NHS and Cleveland Clinic describe these trade-offs, not a universally superior method. Discuss scar visibility at your preferred hair length, the proposed technique, aftercare, the surgeon’s experience, and how the plan accounts for future hair loss before choosing.

Does a hair transplant hurt?

The procedure is commonly done with local anaesthetic and sedation. NHS guidance says patients are awake but should not feel pain during the operation. Anaesthesia plans and individual experiences differ, so ask the clinician what to expect in your case.

After surgery, possible effects include aching or throbbing, tightness, tenderness, swelling, numbness, and scabs. Cleveland Clinic describes pain, swelling, numbness, or tightness among possible effects; MedlinePlus notes that the scalp can be tender during recovery and pain medicine may be needed. These sources do not establish a reliable pain score or incidence figure.

Will a hair transplant leave a scar?

Yes. FUT leaves a linear scar where the strip was removed; FUE leaves multiple small scars where individual grafts were taken. Neither method is scar-free. How noticeable a scar is depends on factors such as healing, technique, and hair length. Ask the clinician to explain the expected scar pattern for the method they recommend rather than assuming FUE scars will be invisible.

What is recovery like?

Follow the operating surgeon’s instructions, which take precedence over general timelines. The NHS gives these typical recovery points:

  • Exercise may need to be reduced during the first month to limit scarring.

Ask the clinic what to do if pain becomes severe or symptoms are unexpected; NHS guidance advises contacting the clinic promptly in those circumstances.

How long does it take to see results?

Regrowth is gradual, and early shedding can be part of the process. NHS patient guidance, last reviewed 29 September 2023, says transplanted hair often falls out after a few weeks, new hair usually starts appearing after about four months, and full results should be seen after 10 to 18 months. Cleveland Clinic describes regrowth beginning over the following months and full results taking up to a year. These are general patient-information timelines, not promises; the sources give different ranges.

Are hair transplant results permanent?

Transplanted follicles may continue to grow after healing, but that does not mean the overall hairstyle or density is permanently fixed. Hair that was not transplanted can keep thinning around the transplanted area, and additional sessions or touch-ups may be needed. A long-term plan should consider how future native-hair loss could affect the appearance.

What risks should I consider?

Possible complications include bleeding, infection, an allergic reaction to anaesthetic, graft failure or poor growth, noticeable scarring, numbness, pain, and an unnatural appearance. Short-term tightness, aching, swelling, and scabbing can also occur. The sources cited here do not provide a reliable procedure-specific incidence rate, so a clinician should explain the risks relevant to your health and proposed operation.

How should I choose a hair-transplant provider?

Ask questions before agreeing to surgery. NHS guidance recommends checking qualifications and experience, the clinician’s reasons for recommending a method, complication history, follow-up arrangements, and patient satisfaction. Useful questions include:

  • What is causing my hair loss, and how does that affect whether surgery is suitable?
  • Why do you recommend FUE or FUT for my pattern of loss and preferred hair length?
  • What qualifications and experience do you have with this procedure?
  • What complications have you encountered, and who will handle follow-up if something goes wrong?
  • How does the plan account for continued thinning of hair that is not transplanted?

In England, the NHS advises checking clinic or hospital registration with the Care Quality Commission and checking a doctor’s registration and licence with the General Medical Council. These checks are specific to England; elsewhere, verify the clinician’s and facility’s standing with the relevant local regulators.
