The “18 cloud options” in this headline comes from a list published on April 2, 2015—not a current count of Hadoop services. Its entries mixed managed cloud platforms with infrastructure providers, consultants, integrated systems, and broad provider suggestions. Today, several major cloud providers still document Hadoop-related managed offerings, but their names, deployment models, supported frameworks, and responsibilities differ. Use the old list as historical context, not as a current shortlist.
What “Hadoop as a service” means
Hadoop as a service generally means using a provider’s cloud platform to run Hadoop or related big-data frameworks without building and operating all of the underlying infrastructure yourself. The phrase does not identify one uniform product: a provider may offer a managed cluster, a container-based deployment, or a serverless service, with different levels of customer control and operational work.
That distinction matters when revisiting the 18 options in the 2015 KDnuggets article. The entries were not 18 equivalent managed Hadoop products, and the article does not establish which of them remain available today. The list should not be treated as a present-day market count or recommendation. The original article is useful for historical context only.

These examples show that providers continue to document services relevant to Hadoop and big-data workloads. They are illustrative, not a complete market survey, and product details should be confirmed for the region and workload you intend to use.
#1 Best Overall
Amazon EMR
AWS describes Amazon EMR as a managed cluster platform for Apache Hadoop and other big-data frameworks. AWS documents EMR on EC2, EMR on EKS, and EMR Serverless. These are distinct deployment models, not interchangeable names for a persistent Hadoop cluster; check the current EMR overview and release documentation for framework and version support before choosing a configuration.
Azure HDInsight
Microsoft describes Azure HDInsight as a managed analytics service and cluster platform for Hadoop, Spark, Hive, Kafka, and other open-source frameworks. Its product documentation is the place to confirm current cluster types, capabilities, security controls, and availability.
Rank #2
Alibaba Cloud E-MapReduce
Alibaba Cloud describes E-MapReduce (EMR) as a big-data platform built on Apache Hadoop and Spark. Its documented forms include EMR on ECS, EMR on ACK, and Serverless Spark. The infrastructure and operational responsibilities differ among them; Alibaba’s deployment documentation notes that customers remain responsible for component operations in some forms.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Big Data Service
Oracle presents OCI Big Data Service as an enterprise Hadoop-as-a-service offering. Its overview was updated August 5, 2026; consult Oracle’s current documentation for supported software, regions, and service details.
Google Cloud: verify the exact service scope
Google Cloud’s service-comparison page places its managed Apache Spark service in a category covering managed Hadoop and Spark services and lists AWS EMR and Azure HDInsight as comparators. That categorization alone does not establish that the named Google service provides a Hadoop cluster. Confirm the current product name, framework support, and capabilities in Google Cloud product documentation before treating it as a Hadoop service.
How to compare options for your workload
Start with the workload rather than the provider name. Confirm that the service supports the framework and version you need, then compare how it runs and who operates each layer. Geography, security requirements, storage integration, and workload-specific pricing can change the practical choice; do not assume availability or cost is the same across regions or deployment forms.
Rank #4
- Framework: Does the offering support Hadoop itself, or is it centered on Spark or other tools? Check supported versions and lifecycle status.
- Deployment model: Is it a managed cluster, a Kubernetes-based service, or serverless compute? Determine whether the model fits persistent workloads, variable demand, and the control you need.
- Operational responsibility: Identify who handles cluster configuration, component operations, upgrades, monitoring, and recovery. “Managed” does not necessarily mean the provider manages every component.
- Storage and data services: Check how the service connects to the storage and processing tools your organization already uses, including any changes needed to move data.
- Region and governance: Verify service availability in the required geography and assess security controls and compliance needs against the provider’s current documentation.
- Pricing: Estimate the cost for your actual workload, region, storage, and deployment model. A provider-level comparison without those inputs cannot support a meaningful ranking.
Why the 18-option count is historical
The number 18 belongs to the 2015 article, not to a verified current industry count. The original roundup combined fundamentally different kinds of organizations and offerings, so even in its own context the entries were not directly comparable. Product names and service scope also change over time. A useful present-day comparison needs a newly verified set of services, matched to a specific workload and location, rather than a recycled count.
