Unauthorized users reportedly accessed unencrypted Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) records from October 2025 until July 2026, exposing information tied to more than 3 million living and deceased people. The Pentagon said the vulnerability was discovered and patched on July 16, 2026. Reports describe exposed fields including Social Security numbers and military job or service information, but do not establish that every affected person had the same information exposed.
What happened in the DMDC breach?
The Defense Manpower Data Center, a Department of Defense personnel-records and identity-management unit, experienced unauthorized access through a vulnerability in a file-sharing system. A Pentagon official told Federal News Network that a small number of unauthorized users had access from October 2025 to July 2026. The breach notification, as described by TechCrunch, says access began in October 2025 and continued into mid-July 2026. Reports say the flaw was discovered and patched on July 16, 2026, and the file-sharing system was restored.
The records were reportedly unencrypted. The reports do not identify the file-sharing product or explain the technical vulnerability, how the attackers got in, or why access continued for months before discovery. They also do not name the attackers or establish attribution, so the incident cannot be reliably linked to a particular vendor or threat group.
How many people were affected, and who might they be?
Accounts published from September 28 to October 1, 2026, report more than 3 million affected people. Federal News Network cites a Pentagon official who gave counts of nearly 2.8 million living people and 294,000 deceased people. TechRadar reports 2.76 million living individuals and 294,000 deceased individuals, attributing those figures to a Department of War official speaking to CNN. The reports do not provide an independently audited final total.

TechCrunch says DMDC maintains more than 60 million records for military and civilian staff and family members; that is the center’s overall records population, not the number involved in this breach.
What information was exposed?
Reported categories include names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, contact information, sex, race, and military service or job information, such as occupational specialty. Federal News Network notes that the fields varied by person, so the reports do not establish that each affected individual had every listed data type exposed.

What officials have said—and what remains uncertain
A Pentagon official told TechCrunch there was no indication that the affected information had been misused. The reports do not explain the basis for that assessment, and it does not establish that misuse is impossible.
Federal News Network reproduced this sentence from the breach notification: “DMDC immediately initiated privacy and cybersecurity incident response actions in accordance with Office of Management and Budget at department guidelines and policies.” TechCrunch also quotes DMDC website wording about its general role: “We make sure that the right people get access and the wrong people don’t: security of identity information is paramount.” That website statement is not a comment on this incident.
