GX Mode is not documented as a setting on ASUS graphics cards. ASUS’s manuals place it in software for Xonar audio cards, where it was intended to support older games using EAX and DirectSound 3D extensions. For graphics-card tuning, ASUS documents a separate utility called GPU Tweak III.
What ASUS GX Mode does
In its Xonar DX manual, ASUS defines GX Mode as “DirectSound 3D Game Extensions mode to support EAX and DirectSound 3D Hardware extensions for lots of DirectX/DirectSound3D games on Windows Vista and XP.” The Xonar DG SI manual gives a similar description, naming Windows 7 and XP.
These manuals document the feature’s historical purpose and listed operating-system context. They do not establish that GX Mode or the associated drivers work on current Windows versions, nor do they promise compatibility with every game.
Which ASUS cards have GX Mode?
The ASUS manuals reviewed associate GX Mode with Xonar audio cards, including the Xonar DX and Xonar DG SI. They do not identify it as a feature of ASUS graphics cards. If you were looking for GX Mode on a GPU, the likely confusion is between an audio-card feature and graphics-card software.
#1 Best Overall
- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal heat transfer, lowering GPU temperatures for enhanced performance and reliability
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- Dual-ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as standard conventional sleeve bearings designs
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
GX Mode versus ASUS GPU Tweak III
ASUS documents GPU Tweak III as a desktop graphics-card utility for adjusting settings such as overclocking, voltage, and fan control. Its listed modes are Default, Overclocking, Quiet, and Custom—not GX Mode. See the ASUS GPU Tweak III page.
| Feature or utility | Hardware context | Documented purpose |
|---|---|---|
| GX Mode | ASUS Xonar audio cards, including Xonar DX and Xonar DG SI | Support for EAX and DirectSound 3D extensions in compatible DirectX/DirectSound3D games, in the legacy Windows contexts named by the manuals |
| GPU Tweak III | ASUS desktop graphics cards | Graphics-card tuning, including overclocking, voltage adjustment, and fan control |
What to check if you need GX Mode
- Check the exact model name: the manuals describing GX Mode are for Xonar audio cards, not generic ASUS graphics cards.
- Check the operating-system and driver requirements for the exact audio-card model. The manuals’ Windows Vista/XP and Windows 7/XP references are historical documentation, not proof of current compatibility.
- If considering a used or old-stock Xonar card, verify its condition, driver availability, and compatibility with your Windows version before buying. Current availability and support are not established by the manuals.
GX Mode and Hi-Fi Mode
The Xonar DG SI manual also lists Hi-Fi mode, describing it as clearing effects to preserve original digital data and analog output quality. That is a separate audio mode; it is not a graphics-card tuning profile.
