Gwynne Shotwell and her husband, Robert, have pledged one SpaceX share for each of more than two million children, according to Fortune. The pledge shows how qualifying stock can be contributed through the Trump Account program, but it does not establish that the shares have been transferred or that the donors will receive a particular tax benefit. Fortune’s reported dollar estimates—$325 million attributed to President Donald Trump and about $330 million estimated by Fortune on October 9, 2026—are snapshots, not cash proceeds or a final transfer valuation.
What Shotwell and her husband pledged
Fortune reported on October 9, 2026, that SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell and her husband, Robert, pledged one SpaceX share for each of more than two million children. The reported target is children ages 11–17 in lower-income areas, with additional emphasis on children near the couple’s Central Texas home. Fortune characterized the pledge as a tax-smart model; that is its framing, not a verified conclusion about the donors’ tax outcome. Fortune’s report
The reported valuations differ by date and source. Fortune said Trump valued the gift at $325 million; Fortune estimated it at about $330 million on October 9 using the share price at that time. SpaceX share values can change, so neither figure should be read as cash donated or as the final value when any transfer occurs.
Public reporting describes a pledge. It does not verify that the shares have been transferred to Treasury or allocated among eligible accounts. TrumpAccounts.com’s report, updated September 30, 2026, described the pledge terms and noted it was not listed on the tracker consulted at that update.

How stock contributions to Trump Accounts work
Treasury announced on July 2, 2026, that it would accept philanthropic contributions of approved publicly traded stock for Trump Accounts, subject to donor instructions, applicable law, and Treasury guidance. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the process would create a pathway for large-scale private giving. Treasury’s announcement
Temporary Treasury and IRS regulations effective September 30, 2026, set requirements for qualified-stock contributions, including a minimum five-year holding period, subject to the regulations’ stated earlier endpoint. The temporary regulations establish a route for qualifying stock; they do not confirm the terms or completion of this particular pledge.

The available sources do not establish whether SpaceX shares in this pledge meet the applicable rules, how the transfer would be structured, or whether it has occurred. They also do not establish that SpaceX is publicly listed or that its shares are freely tradable. The specific contribution process and implementation details matter.
Does the pledge create an income-tax deduction?
The stock-contribution mechanism is not itself a new income-tax deduction. Treasury and the IRS state that the temporary rules do not change the deductibility of cash or appreciated-stock gifts to 501(c)(3) organizations. General charitable deductions remain subject to existing eligibility, valuation, limitation, and substantiation rules. IRS guidance on charitable contribution deductions

The IRS generally allows deductions for qualifying gifts to eligible organizations under applicable rules; gifts directly to individuals are not deductible. A contribution through the Trump Account framework is a separate pathway governed by section 530A and the temporary regulations. The regulations do not establish a donor-specific deduction for Shotwell or her husband.
The agencies explain that an eligible donor—generally a 501(c)(3) organization for a general funding contribution—may be involved. They also describe how an account trustee might manage an orderly liquidation of contributed stock after the required holding period. That explanation is not a finding about the Shotwells’ tax planning or a guarantee of a deduction. Temporary regulations and agency explanation

It is not possible to calculate a tax benefit from the reported $300–330 million pledge value. The public information cited here does not establish the donors’ cost basis, holding period, ownership proportions, eligible-donor structure, completion of the gift, allowable deduction, or individual tax circumstances.

Rev. Proc. 2026-25 provides a gift-tax reporting safe harbor for certain qualifying individual contributions under its conditions, including limits and reporting circumstances. Its examples concern cash contributions. It is not evidence that a stock contribution qualifies for an income-tax charitable deduction, and the two forms of tax treatment should not be conflated. What account investments have to do with donated stock
Trump Accounts are a new type of traditional IRA. During the growth period, IRS guidance generally describes eligible investments as mutual funds or ETFs tracking an equity index of primarily U.S. companies, without leverage, and with annual fees and expenses at or below 0.1%. That investment rule concerns holdings bought or held in an account; it is distinct from the regulations’ separate process for contributing specified qualified stock directly. IRS proposed-regulation announcement
A September 30, 2026, SEC staff statement said Treasury would establish Auto Accounts on or about October 1 for eligible individuals who did not already have an account established, and identified BNY as trustee of the Master Trust. Those implementation details do not confirm receipt or allocation of the Shotwell shares. SEC staff statement
What readers can and cannot conclude
- Reported: the couple pledged one SpaceX share for each of more than two million children, with a stated focus on children ages 11–17 in lower-income areas.
- Time-sensitive: the $325 million and about $330 million figures are attributed estimates from different dates, not a final amount.
- Established by rule: qualifying stock contributions are possible under Treasury’s process and temporary regulations, subject to eligibility and other conditions.
- Not established: completed transfer, allocation to children’s accounts, the precise mechanics of this pledge, or a specific income-tax or gift-tax result for the donors.
Anyone considering a Trump Account contribution should check current Treasury and IRS requirements and consult a qualified tax professional about their own circumstances. The IRS’s general charitable-deduction guidance explains the separate rules for deductible gifts to eligible organizations.
