Type U+00AB for the left guillemet («) and U+00BB for the right one (»). In Word on Windows, enter the four-digit code and press Alt+X; on macOS, use the Unicode Hex Input source; and on GNOME or other GTK desktops, press Ctrl+Shift+U, enter the code, then press Space or Enter. Shortcuts depend on the app and input environment, so use a character picker when a direct method is unavailable.
Which guillemet do you need?
Guillemets are paired quotation marks: « opens and » closes. Their Unicode code points are U+00AB and U+00BB, respectively. They are not the mathematical less-than and greater-than signs, < and >.

Type guillemets in Word on Windows
- Place the cursor where you want the character.
- Type
00ABfor « or00BBfor ». - Press Alt+X. Word converts the hexadecimal code into the corresponding character.
Microsoft documents this method for Word for Microsoft 365, Word 2024, Word 2021, Word 2019, and Word 2016: Microsoft’s instructions for inserting Unicode characters. If the code immediately follows another hexadecimal character, select just 00AB or 00BB before pressing Alt+X. If the result is missing or looks unexpected, check the font.
Use a character picker in other Windows apps
Alt+X is a documented Word shortcut, not a universal Windows shortcut for every application or text field. Unicode notes that Word and Outlook support hexadecimal entry with Alt+X, while other Windows applications may use different methods. For a selection-based fallback, open Character Map, locate the guillemet, and copy it into your document. See Unicode’s FAQ on entering Unicode characters.

Do not confuse hexadecimal Unicode entry with decimal Alt codes. Microsoft’s numeric-keypad instructions require keypad digits and Num Lock; that is a different input method, and it is not a universal substitute for entering a Unicode hex code.
Type guillemets on macOS
Enter the Unicode code directly
- Open Keyboard settings and add Unicode Hex Input under Input Sources.
- Switch to the Unicode Hex Input source.
- Hold Option and type
00ABor00BB.

Choose the character from Character Viewer
Open Edit > Emoji & Symbols, or choose Show Emoji & Symbols from the Input menu. Expand the viewer if needed, find the guillemet, and insert it.
Type guillemets on Linux
GNOME and GTK desktops
- Press Ctrl+Shift+U, then release the keys.
- Type
00ABor00BB. - Press Space or Enter to insert the character.
This Unicode input sequence is documented for GNOME and other GTK desktop environments. GNOME Character Map is another option when you prefer to select and copy the symbol.

KDE and other Qt desktops
The GNOME/GTK sequence does not apply as a universal Linux shortcut. Unicode says KDE and other Qt desktop environments do not have an equivalent function; use an available character picker, such as KCharSelect, or the symbol feature in your application. These Linux methods are described in Unicode’s FAQ on entering Unicode characters.
Insert guillemets on iPhone, iPad, and Android
Unicode does not document an official hexadecimal-code entry method built into iOS or Android. Some third-party keyboards may offer one. Depending on the keyboard app and enabled languages, a guillemet might also appear on a symbols screen or through a long-press on the double-quote key, but that behavior is not consistent across devices. If you cannot find it, copy « or » from another source or use a suitable symbol-picker feature.

Insert guillemets in Google Docs and other apps
Google’s shortcut guidance warns that some shortcuts vary with language and keyboard, and it does not establish a guillemet-specific key combination. In Docs, try Insert > Special characters and search for “guillemet” or “left-pointing double angle quotation mark.” You can also use a supported operating-system input method. For any application, check that app’s symbol menu before assuming a shortcut works there.
