If you need to install or develop with it, the key detail is the version: its development package and API are separate from GTK 4, and installing GTK 4 alone does not satisfy a project that requires GTK 3. GTK 3 remains the older stable line; GTK 4 is the current stable API.
What is GTK 3?
GTK is a widget toolkit used to build graphical applications. An application combines widgets such as windows, buttons, menus, and input controls, then handles events such as clicks. GTK is implemented in C and uses GObject for its object system. The GTK 3 reference describes the API as 3.0 and its library line as 3.24; its pkg-config module is named gtk+-3.0. GTK is licensed under LGPL-2.1-or-later. GTK 3 API reference
For more complex interfaces, GTK’s getting-started guide covers GtkBuilder and GTK-specific markup. Glade is another option for visually editing an interface. GTK 3 getting started
Which libraries does GTK 3 use?
The GTK 3 reference lists GObject, ATK, Pango, and GDK among its dependencies. The broader GTK platform includes other libraries that serve distinct roles; not every application needs to add each one as a direct dependency.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Library | Role | Relationship to GTK 3 |
|---|---|---|
| GObject | Object system used by GTK. | Listed as a GTK 3 dependency. |
| ATK | Accessibility support. | Listed as a GTK 3 dependency. |
| Pango | Text layout and fonts. | Listed as a GTK 3 dependency. |
| GDK | Abstraction over window-system details. | Listed as a GTK 3 dependency. |
| GLib | Core application building blocks, including common types, the main loop, and utility functions. | Part of GTK’s wider platform foundation. |
| GdkPixbuf | Image loading and manipulation. | Related GTK platform library. |
| Cairo | Two-dimensional graphics. | Related drawing library. |
These roles are described in the GTK documentation index. Other GNOME ecosystem libraries are optional by application: libadwaita supplies widgets and GNOME design patterns, while WebKitGTK can provide embedded web views. Neither is a universal GTK 3 prerequisite. GNOME libraries overview
How to install GTK 3 libraries
On GNU/Linux, install the package for your distribution. Runtime packages let applications use the toolkit; development packages provide the files and metadata needed to compile software against it. Package names can vary with distribution releases, so check the package index for the system you are targeting.

| Distribution | GTK 3 package names listed by GTK |
|---|---|
| Arch | gtk3 |
| Debian/Ubuntu | libgtk-3-0 for runtime; libgtk-3-dev for development; gtk-3-examples is also listed. |
| Fedora | gtk3 and gtk3-devel. |
These package names come from GTK’s GNU/Linux and Unix installation guide; verify availability and exact naming for your release before installing.
Check the development setup
For a C application, use the GTK 3 pkg-config module to obtain compiler and linker flags. A typical check is pkg-config --modversion gtk+-3.0; it should print the installed GTK 3 version when the development files and pkg-config metadata are available. If it reports that the package is not found, install the development package for your distribution or correct the pkg-config search path.

GTK 3 runtime, application development, and building GTK itself
Installing a runtime package, compiling an application against an installed GTK library, and building GTK itself are different tasks. Most application developers should install the distribution’s GTK 3 development package rather than compile the toolkit from source. GTK 3 documentation separates instructions for compiling GTK, compiling applications, and running applications. GTK 3 API reference and documentation
Building GTK from source involves additional tooling and platform-dependent dependencies. The GTK repository README lists a C11-compatible compiler, Python 3, Meson, Ninja, and other dependencies as current repository guidance, and illustrates Meson setup and compilation. Because the repository’s main-branch instructions can change and need not match a legacy GTK 3 build, consult the GTK 3-specific build documentation when building that version. GTK project repository

Is GTK 3 still supported, and should you choose it over GTK 4?
GTK describes GTK 3 as an older stable version and GTK 4 as the current stable API. The GTK homepage listed GTK 3.24.52 as the latest old-stable release when consulted on October 4, 2026; release labels can change. GTK installation guidance GTK project homepage
GTK 3 and GTK 4 environments can be installed side by side. Choose the major version required by the application or project: they are distinct APIs, so a GTK 4 installation does not replace a GTK 3 dependency.

- Use GTK 3 when you are maintaining or extending a project that depends on GTK 3, or when its required APIs and widgets are not available in your target version.
- Consider GTK 4 for a new project when its APIs, platform requirements, dependencies, and deployment targets fit. GTK’s status labels establish which line is current, but do not amount to a universal migration recommendation.
- Before migrating, check application compatibility, migration effort, maintained packages on target systems, required backends, and whether the rest of the dependency stack is tied to one GTK major version.
Can GTK 3 run on Windows or macOS?
The GTK 3 API documentation includes guidance for X11, Windows, Wayland, macOS, and Broadway. That documents platform and backend paths; it does not mean every application, dependency, package, or build behaves identically across them. For a real deployment, verify the specific application’s target platform, required backend, dependency packaging, and maintenance needs. GTK 3 API reference
