In GTA V, wanted stars show the strength of the police response. Crimes that draw police attention can start a wanted level; resisting or remaining in pursuit can escalate it. To escape, get out of police sight, move away without being seen again, and stay hidden until the stars disappear. Story Mode and GTA Online share that basic idea, but their options and activity rules can differ.
What raises your wanted level?
Police attention can trigger a wanted level, and continued resistance or pursuit can raise the response. There is no reliable, exhaustive crime-to-star chart established here, so treat the stars as a measure of how forcefully law enforcement is responding—not as a precise guide to which individual action produces a particular number of stars. GTA Wiki’s GTA V wanted-level overview describes the broad behavior, but it is community-maintained.

How to lose the police
- Stop making yourself easy to track. Avoid driving straight back into police who can see you.
- Break line of sight. Use streets, buildings, or terrain as circumstances allow; none is a guaranteed hiding spot.
- Move away without being reacquired. Distance helps only if you do not lead police directly back to your position.
- Stay out of sight while the search continues. Wait for the stars to disappear before resuming activity.
The available guidance supports breaking line of sight and hiding as the general approach, not a fixed countdown or guaranteed route. A particular tunnel, garage, vehicle modification, cheat, or character ability should not be treated as a sure solution.
Story Mode: use the basic evasion approach
In Story Mode, focus on getting away from pursuing police, breaking their line of sight, and remaining hidden until the wanted state clears. The broad method is more dependable as advice than a claimed exact pursuit timer or universal hiding place; those details are not established by the cited community reference. GTA Online: check the activity and current options
GTA Online has its own wanted-level behavior and options, so do not assume a Story Mode method or service applies unchanged. Some secondary references describe ways to remove a wanted level immediately, but current availability, requirements, and restrictions are not verified across activities or updates. If you are considering an in-game phone or menu option, check what is actually available in your session and whether your current activity permits it. GTA Wiki’s GTA Online overview is community-maintained and should not be treated as a current, comprehensive rulebook.

Wanted-level rules may also depend on a creator activity’s settings. Rockstar Games’ GTA Online — Race Creator guide states: “Enabling Wanted Level allows the police to chase Race participants during the course.” That is a setting for created races, not a general instruction for every Online activity.
