Rockstar and the Miami Heat are promoting Grand Theft Auto VI with “A Night in Vice City,” a campaign that temporarily gives the basketball team Vice City branding. The headline’s joke comes from reactions by several PC Gamer staff members in the UK who said they did not know the Heat—not from a survey of British people or even all UK editors.
What is “A Night in Vice City”?
In a report published October 2, 2026, PC Gamer described a cross-promotion between Rockstar and the Miami Heat. The basketball team is temporarily using Vice City branding, linking the NBA franchise with the fictional setting of Grand Theft Auto VI.

The feature turns the partnership into a newsroom gag: several UK-based PC Gamer staff members said they had not heard of the Miami Heat. One US-based colleague also said he probably could not have identified the team. Joshua Wolens, a news writer, was quoted as saying, “But I generally assume I don’t know most of what’s happening in the modern world.”

No. The reported reactions are anecdotal comments from a handful of PC Gamer employees, not a representative survey of the UK, the United States, or sports fans. They support the narrower joke in the headline: some editors in that newsroom did not recognize the team.

PC Gamer’s report did not give a measured awareness figure for the campaign or for the Miami Heat. Its staff exchange is evidence of those individuals’ reactions, not a measure of public familiarity.
Why might a basketball partnership help market GTA 6?
The staff discussion was about possible reach, not results. Fraser Brown, PC Gamer’s online editor, questioned whether the collaboration was too narrow compared with a Netflix trailer, saying, “A basketball stunt is so much more niche than, say, the Netflix trailer.” Cameron Bald, the site’s audience development manager, suggested it could catch the attention of very casual players who might need a reason to return to games. He described the audience as “The super-casual types who are still on a PS4 and need convincing that GTA 6 is worth getting back into games over.”

Lauren Morton compared the promotion to an impulse-purchase display: the value could be broad exposure to people who are not actively looking for the game, rather than persuading committed fans who already know about it. That is a marketing argument, not proof that the campaign will reach those players or change their plans.

What is confirmed about GTA 6’s release and editions?
Rockstar’s official game page lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a November 19, 2026 release date. Rockstar Support, in a page last updated August 18, 2026, says pre-orders are available for those platforms.

Buyers should note the physical Standard Edition’s format: Rockstar says its box contains a download code and no disc. A boxed copy therefore does not mean disc media. Rockstar’s game page also lists The Vice City Collection as a limited-edition collectible set; the available information does not establish that it is Miami Heat event merchandise.
