GTA 6 is not yet a proven successor to Red Dead Redemption 2’s open world. Rockstar’s announced details establish a modern crime story about Jason and Lucia in the fictional state of Leonida, with Vice City among its settings. By contrast, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a released 1899 western with documented honor consequences and a wildlife system Rockstar described as covering around 200 species. The comparison is useful for separating what Rockstar has confirmed from what remains unknown ahead of GTA 6’s scheduled November 19, 2026 release.

What has Rockstar confirmed about GTA 6?

Rockstar’s official page currently lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a release date of November 19, 2026. Those plans are time-sensitive, so check the official GTA VI page for changes closer to launch. Rockstar’s June 24, 2026 preorder notice says the physical package contains a download code inside the box, rather than a game disc, and that digital preloading is scheduled to begin November 12. See Rockstar’s preorder announcement for those details.

Setting and story

In its May 6, 2025 announcement for Trailer 2, Rockstar framed the story around Jason and Lucia. An easy score goes wrong, drawing them into a criminal conspiracy across Leonida; Rockstar’s official page identifies Vice City, USA, within that setting. This is an announced premise, not a complete account of the plot or the whole playable world. Rockstar’s Trailer 2 announcement and official trailer page provide the source material.

What the footage does—and does not—show

Official trailer footage shows particular scenes, characters, and locations. It is evidence of what Rockstar chose to show, but not proof that every scene is representative of the full game or that a depicted activity works as a playable system. The announced materials establish the setting and premise; they do not establish a map area, mission structure, or a complete list of world mechanics.

What Red Dead Redemption 2 establishes as a released game

Story and era

Rockstar’s launch-trailer description places Red Dead Redemption 2 in America in 1899. After a robbery in Blackwater goes wrong, Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang flee while federal agents and bounty hunters pursue them. Divisions threaten the gang, and Arthur faces a choice between his ideals and loyalty. That makes RDR2 a historical western, unlike GTA 6’s contemporary crime premise. These different premises do not establish which story is better or longer. Rockstar’s launch-trailer description outlines the setup.

Honor and player agency

RDR2 has an honor system tied to interactions with the world. Rockstar’s October 2018 description gives examples of actions that raise or lower honor and says a player’s honor level brings consequences and benefits based on decisions. This is a documented feature of the released game, not evidence that GTA 6 will use a matching system. Read Rockstar’s explanation of honor in RDR2.

Wildlife and environmental detail

Rockstar described RDR2’s habitats and climates as home to “around 200 species of animals, birds and fish,” with different behaviors and responses to their environments. That figure is Rockstar’s published description from 2018, not an independent count. Rockstar has not established a comparable GTA 6 species count in the materials cited here. Its wildlife feature explains the RDR2 claim.

GTA 6 vs. RDR2: what the evidence supports

Comparison GTA 6 Red Dead Redemption 2
Era and setting Rockstar-announced modern crime setting across Leonida, including Vice City, USA. Released game set in America in 1899, according to Rockstar’s launch-trailer description.
Protagonists and premise Rockstar identifies Jason and Lucia; an easy score goes wrong and pulls them into a criminal conspiracy across Leonida. Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang flee after a robbery in Blackwater goes wrong, as federal agents and bounty hunters pursue them.
Confirmed systems and agency The cited official materials establish no comparable honor or morality system. Released game has an honor system with consequences and benefits linked to decisions, as Rockstar described in 2018.
Wildlife figure A comparable species count is not stated in the cited official materials. Rockstar described around 200 animal, bird, and fish species in 2018; this is the publisher’s figure.
Platforms and release status Scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S according to Rockstar’s current page; plans may change. Launched worldwide for PS4 and Xbox One on October 26, 2018; the PC release arrived November 5, 2019.
Key unknowns Map dimensions, mission structure, world density, and comparable mechanics are not established by the cited materials. Released-game features can be described; the evidence does not make them a prediction of GTA 6.

The table compares different kinds of evidence: GTA 6 details are announcements about an unreleased game, while RDR2 details are features and descriptions of a released one. It does not support a ranking of scale, realism, interactivity, or depth.

What remains unknown before GTA 6 launches?

Rockstar’s cited GTA 6 materials establish a story premise, characters, setting, platforms, and release timing. They do not answer several natural questions readers may have about the world:

  • How large is the map? No map dimensions are established in the cited material.
  • How dense or interactive is the world? The footage shows selected scenes, not a verified measure of activity or interaction across the full map.
  • Will GTA 6 have an honor system like RDR2? No comparable morality mechanic is established in the cited GTA 6 announcements.
  • How will wildlife compare? Rockstar has not supplied a comparable GTA 6 species count in those materials.
  • How are missions structured? The announced premise does not establish the overall mission design.
  • How will the games compare technically? There is no matched hardware benchmark or GTA 6 PC specification in the cited material.

Platforms and technical comparisons

Rockstar announced RDR2’s worldwide launch for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 26, 2018, with Red Dead Online access included in that launch announcement. The PC release arrived November 5, 2019. These are historical launch facts; they do not confirm current store stock, editions, or modern performance. • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.

For that PC release, Rockstar cited increased draw distances, upgraded global illumination and ambient occlusion, improved snow trails and reflections, higher-resolution shadows, and updated tree, grass, and fur textures. It listed 150GB of disk space for the PC release. Those are historical specifications and feature notes for RDR2 on PC, not a direct performance comparison with GTA 6. Rockstar’s cited materials do not provide a GTA 6 PC specification or a matched benchmark.
