There is no fair verdict on which is better yet: as of October 7, 2026, Grand Theft Auto VI is still unreleased, with current official listings giving it a November 19, 2026 release date. A useful comparison instead asks what each game is designed to do, what its version and hardware make possible, and how it handles shared dimensions such as world structure, controls, story, and player choice.

Version labels matter. The original The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was a Nintendo 64 action-adventure released in November 1998. Nintendo has also listed a substantially updated edition for Nintendo Switch 2, due November 5, 2026. Those are not the same presentation of the same game, and neither can yet be directly compared through firsthand play with an unreleased GTA VI.

First, identify which versions are being compared

A cross-era comparison can mean either comparing the original games as they appeared at release or comparing the versions players can access now. Those questions have different answers.

  • Original Ocarina of Time: Nintendo identifies it as a Nintendo 64 action-adventure released in November 1998. Nintendo’s history page says it “set new standards” and broke pre-order records for any videogame to that date; that is Nintendo’s retrospective characterization, not a quantified independent comparison. Nintendo’s Zelda history and Nintendo’s interview about the game provide the historical framing.
  • Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2: Nintendo’s US listing describes a future edition with overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, symphonic orchestral music, enhanced controls, and modern camera movements. The listed release date is November 5, 2026. These are Nintendo’s product claims; the listing does not establish specific resolution, frame rate, or independent performance results. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 product listing.
  • Grand Theft Auto VI: Rockstar’s current store page and Xbox’s listing give November 19, 2026 as the release date. Xbox lists Xbox Series X|S. The game is upcoming as of October 7, 2026, so its actual play, performance, and quality cannot yet be compared from firsthand experience. Rockstar’s official game page and Xbox’s listing are the current release-status references.

Take-Two’s May 6, 2025 announcement previously listed May 26, 2026 for GTA VI; that older date conflicts with the later official listings. Take-Two also reported “over 440 million units sold-in worldwide” for the Grand Theft Auto franchise in that announcement. It is a franchise-wide figure, not sales of GTA VI. Read Take-Two’s dated announcement.

Compare design aims before comparing scale

Start with the kind of attention and activity each game asks of a player, not with a single scale rating. A game can offer a large setting without making exploration, navigation, or choice work in the same way as another game. Likewise, “freedom” can refer to different things: where a player may go, what they may do, or how they approach a challenge.

For Ocarina of Time, the secure starting point is its identity as a Nintendo 64 action-adventure. A useful comparison examines how its spaces, challenges, and story direct the player through that adventure. For GTA VI, official material establishes the game’s upcoming status and premise, but not enough verified play detail to state how open its world is in practice or what actions its systems permit. Do not turn a trailer impression or genre expectation into a confirmed design fact.

World structure: ask how places connect and guide play

Rather than ranking maps by apparent size, compare how each game uses space. Useful questions include whether areas funnel the player toward an objective, invite detours, or build understanding through repeated visits; how movement between places is handled; and what the player gains by exploring. These questions apply across genres without assuming the answers will match.

For the original Nintendo 64 Ocarina of Time, keep the comparison grounded in that edition and its historical context. For the Switch 2 edition, Nintendo’s announced camera and control updates may affect how the game feels to navigate, but the listing alone does not describe every change to world structure. For GTA VI, wait for verified gameplay details or the released game before making claims about traversal, map structure, or the practical degree of player freedom.

Controls and camera: distinguish design from modernization

Controls and camera shape what a player can perceive and do. When comparing the two Ocarina of Time editions, separate the original Nintendo 64 presentation from Nintendo’s listed Switch 2 changes: the newer listing specifically names enhanced controls and modern camera movements, alongside its visual, audio, and dialogue updates. Those claims describe the updated edition, not the 1998 release.

Rockstar and Xbox’s cited release listings do not establish GTA VI’s control scheme or camera behavior. It is therefore premature to call its controls more precise, more modern, or easier to use. Once it is playable, a grounded comparison can look at camera control, targeting, movement, interaction, and how clearly each game communicates nearby threats or points of interest.

Rockstar Games Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition (PS4)
  • Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.

Narrative: compare how story and player activity are framed

For a fair comparison, distinguish the premise and characters a publisher has officially named from conclusions about how a full story plays out. Story framing includes not only plot, but how frequently the game interrupts or guides activity, how character perspective shapes the player’s role, and how optional activity relates to the central narrative.

Before launch, keep GTA VI discussion to its official premise and named protagonists where the publisher has disclosed them. Trailer footage does not by itself establish the final structure, tone, or balance between story missions and other play. Nintendo’s Switch 2 listing does confirm voiced cutscenes and expanded dialogue for that edition of Ocarina of Time; this is a presentation change to the listed version, not evidence that the original Nintendo 64 release contained those enhancements.

Technical presentation is context, not a quality score

Newer hardware can support different visual and audio presentation, but technical fidelity does not automatically make a game better at its own aims. Compare what a particular edition actually delivers and how those choices serve play. Nintendo says the Switch 2 edition has “completely overhauled visuals,” voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, and symphonic orchestral music. It also lists enhanced controls and modern camera movements. Those are concrete announced differences; the product page does not establish exact resolution, frame rate, or a performance comparison with GTA VI.

The original Ocarina of Time should be assessed against the Nintendo 64 context in which it launched, while a modern edition should be judged as that edition. GTA VI will need to be assessed on its released build and actual platform performance. Until then, technical comparisons that treat expected capability as measured experience are speculation.

Use a fair comparison checklist

  1. Name the editions and date. Say whether the subject is the original 1998 Nintendo 64 Ocarina of Time or Nintendo’s listed Switch 2 edition, and identify GTA VI as upcoming as of October 7, 2026.
  2. State the evidence level. Separate historical facts and official product claims from observations that require hands-on play. Do not present anticipated GTA VI gameplay as verified.
  3. Compare one dimension at a time. Examine world structure, controls and camera, narrative framing, interaction, and technical presentation rather than collapsing them into a single “better” score.
  4. Judge each game against its aims and release context. Ask what it asks the player to do and how well its chosen systems support that purpose, rather than rewarding scale or fidelity by default.
  5. Keep sales and packaging claims in their lane. The reported 440-million-plus figure is for the franchise, not GTA VI; Rockstar says the announced physical version contains a digital download code, not a disc. Rockstar’s physical-edition details.

What can be concluded before GTA VI launches?

The comparison is meaningful as a way to understand how games from different eras frame space, control, story, and interaction, but it cannot yet settle which experience is stronger. The original Ocarina of Time has a documented 1998 Nintendo 64 context, and Nintendo has announced a separate, updated Switch 2 edition. GTA VI remains unreleased at the date of this article, so claims about its actual play or quality must wait for evidence from the game itself.
