Buy Grand Theft Auto VI if you want a character-driven, open-world crime adventure and can wait for its November 19, 2026 console launch. Buy Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 if you want military-shooter action, competitive multiplayer, DMZ extraction play, PC or Nintendo Switch 2 support, or earlier campaign access. Qualifying digital pre-orders for Modern Warfare 4 can start the campaign on October 16, seven days before its October 23 launch.
These are not interchangeable games. GTA VI is built around exploring Leonida and following Jason and Lucia through a criminal conspiracy. Modern Warfare 4 is a mission-driven military campaign paired with multiplayer and DMZ. The right purchase depends first on your preferred game structure, then on your console, launch timing and tolerance for digital-only access.

Which game should you buy?
Choose GTA VI when the world matters more than the match
GTA VI is the better fit if your ideal session is driving across a large map, finding side activities, meeting memorable characters and moving through a crime story at your own pace. Rockstar describes Jason and Lucia as partners whose failed score places them inside a criminal conspiracy spanning Leonida. That premise points to a relationship-led narrative rather than a sequence of disconnected missions.

Choose it if you primarily play alone, want an exploratory sandbox and are happy to wait until November 19. The game is currently documented for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, so you also need one of those consoles for launch. Rockstar and Activision have not provided a PC release date; do not buy it expecting a simultaneous computer version.
Choose Modern Warfare 4 when action and replayability come first
Modern Warfare 4 is the practical choice if you want to play sooner, prefer tightly directed military missions or expect to spend most of your time competing online. Its package combines a campaign about a North Korean invasion of the Korean Peninsula with multiplayer and DMZ extraction play. That gives it a clear reason to return after the story is finished.
It is also the only one of the two confirmed for PC and Nintendo Switch 2. A qualifying digital pre-order can unlock the campaign on October 16, while the general release is October 23. If you want the earliest possible access or need a platform beyond current PlayStation and Xbox consoles, Modern Warfare 4 has the stronger case.

Waiting is sensible when your priority is a large single-player world and you do not need to play at launch week. It is not sensible to wait for GTA VI if you own only a PC, PS4 or Xbox One and need a confirmed version now. Rockstar has not announced a PC date, and Modern Warfare 4 explicitly skips the two older consoles.
Release dates and early access
Modern Warfare 4 arrives first
Modern Warfare 4 launches on Friday, October 23, 2026. Activision’s campaign update says qualifying digital pre-orders or pre-purchases receive campaign access beginning October 16. The early window applies to the campaign, not automatically to every part of the game, so read the exact edition terms in your regional store before ordering.
This seven-day head start matters if you want to finish or discuss the story before the full launch weekend. It does not turn the game into a permanent early-access product: the standard release remains October 23.
GTA VI follows on November 19
Rockstar lists November 19, 2026 as GTA VI’s release date. No equivalent campaign-early-access period is identified in Rockstar’s official GTA VI material. If you buy GTA VI, plan around the November date rather than an assumed review, preload or early-play window.

Release timing can also affect your choice of game. Buying Modern Warfare 4 first lets you play a new campaign and its online modes while waiting for GTA VI. Buying both close together may divide your time between a large story game and a service-oriented multiplayer game, so decide whether you want one main game or two different kinds of game at once.
Platform compatibility
GTA VI is a current-generation console purchase
Rockstar’s store and support pages document PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S editions. They do not confirm a PC launch date. That is a statement about the currently documented launch information, not proof that a PC version will never exist; treat PC availability as unresolved until Rockstar publishes a date and requirements.
If you own a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, GTA VI fits the announced launch platforms. If you have only a PS4, Xbox One or PC, do not assume that an older-console or day-one computer edition exists.
Modern Warfare 4 supports more hardware, but not older consoles
Activision confirms Modern Warfare 4 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement specifically says there is no PlayStation 4 or Xbox One version. This is a hard compatibility boundary: an older-console owner cannot solve it by buying a different edition.

- PS5 or Xbox Series X|S: both games are documented for your console.
- PC: Modern Warfare 4 is confirmed; GTA VI has no confirmed PC date in Rockstar and Activision’s published materials.
- Nintendo Switch 2: Modern Warfare 4 is confirmed; GTA VI is not listed for the platform.
- PS4 or Xbox One: Modern Warfare 4 is explicitly unavailable, and no current-generation GTA VI edition is documented for those consoles.
How the two games actually play
GTA VI: an open world organized around exploration
GTA VI’s defining feature is its open-world structure. You are not simply moving from one arena to the next; the setting of Leonida is part of the attraction. The story follows Jason and Lucia, and Rockstar’s official premise places them in a criminal conspiracy after an easy score goes wrong. That setup supports a game in which travel, discovery and character context are as important as individual shootouts.
This structure suits players who like to choose their pace. You can focus on story missions, spend time exploring or alternate between the two. Rockstar’s published material does not provide a complete feature list, mission count or multiplayer specification, so do not treat unannounced systems as guaranteed launch features.

Modern Warfare 4: campaign missions plus repeatable modes
Modern Warfare 4’s campaign is built around a military conflict that begins with a North Korean invasion of the Korean Peninsula. It follows young South Korean soldiers and Captain Price as former allies, enemies and a catastrophic weapon threat become part of the story. The campaign is therefore more directed than GTA VI’s open world, with the pacing and objectives controlled by mission design.
Outside the campaign, the game includes multiplayer and DMZ extraction. Multiplayer is the reason to choose Modern Warfare 4 if you want repeated competitive sessions, while DMZ is aimed at extraction-style play: enter an operation, pursue objectives and resources, and try to leave successfully. Activision’s announcement confirms the mode’s inclusion but does not establish a complete map list, player count or progression rules.

Why GTA VI is the safer solo-first purchase
Everything Rockstar has formally described for GTA VI emphasizes its protagonists, their failed score and the conspiracy surrounding them. For a buyer who plays alone, that is a clear promise of a story-led experience in a world designed to be explored. You do not need to be interested in ranked competition or extraction systems to understand the game’s main appeal.
The trade-off is timing and platform certainty. You wait until November 19, and a PC date is not confirmed. If your enjoyment depends on playing on a computer or older console, the solo appeal does not overcome the hardware limitation.
Why Modern Warfare 4 can still work for solo players
Modern Warfare 4 is not only an online purchase. Its campaign has a defined conflict, a cast that includes Captain Price and South Korean soldiers, and an early-access window for qualifying digital pre-orders. A player who prefers military stories and set-piece action can buy it for the campaign and ignore the competitive modes.

Multiplayer, DMZ and long-term use
Modern Warfare 4 is the only game in this comparison with multiplayer and DMZ explicitly confirmed in Activision’s announcement. That makes it the straightforward choice for groups that want a shared competitive game or an extraction mode. It also means the purchase decision includes factors outside the campaign: your internet connection, online-service availability and willingness to keep learning maps, weapons and strategies.

Rockstar’s launch materials establish GTA VI’s open-world story but do not give a comparable, confirmed multiplayer feature list. Do not buy it on the assumption that a particular online mode, player count or post-launch schedule will be available on day one. Choose it for the information Rockstar has actually published: Jason and Lucia, Leonida and the criminal-conspiracy story.
Physical and digital editions
GTA VI’s boxed copy is a download code
Rockstar confirms that GTA VI is sold in digital and physical versions, but the physical version contains a download code and no disc. The box is therefore packaging for a digital entitlement, not a disc you can install offline or lend independently.

It also warns of region and account redemption restrictions. Before buying a code-in-box copy, verify that the code’s region matches your account and that you have enough storage and internet bandwidth for the download.
The Rockstar store page lists standard and Ultimate digital editions and displays a $79.99 pre-order price for the product shown. That figure belongs to that displayed listing; check your local currency, edition and taxes before treating it as your final total.
Modern Warfare 4 requires edition and platform checks
Activision has announced pre-orders across the supported platforms, but Activision has not provided a complete, comparable price table or a universal physical-edition description. When ordering, confirm the platform, edition contents, campaign-access date and whether the listing is a digital license or a retailer-specific physical product.
Do not infer that a Modern Warfare 4 disc or code will work across PlayStation, Xbox, PC and Switch 2. Console and PC entitlements are normally platform-specific, and the exact terms belong to the store listing you are purchasing from.
Should you preorder Modern Warfare 4?
Reasons a preorder makes sense
- You want to start the campaign on October 16 rather than October 23.
- You already know you will play on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC or Switch 2.
- You are buying digitally and have confirmed that the edition qualifies for campaign early access.
- You intend to play multiplayer or DMZ, so launch-week access has practical value to you.
Reasons to wait
- You are unsure whether your PC meets the final requirements; Activision’s announcement does not publish them.
- You want to compare regional prices or physical-edition terms first.
- You mainly want a solo campaign and do not need seven days of early access.
- You own PS4 or Xbox One, where the game is not supported.
A preorder is a timing decision, not evidence that the game is better than GTA VI. Buy early only when the platform and edition are certain and the October 16 campaign window is worth the commitment.

Buying scenarios
You own a PS5 and want one new game this autumn
Choose GTA VI if your priority is an open-world crime story and you are comfortable waiting until November 19. Choose Modern Warfare 4 if you want to play in October, prefer military action or expect to spend substantial time in multiplayer and DMZ.
You own Xbox Series X|S
The same game-shape decision applies. Both are documented for your console, so release timing and preferred format matter more than compatibility. GTA VI offers the later, exploration-led experience; Modern Warfare 4 offers the earlier launch and multiplayer package.
You play on PC
Modern Warfare 4 is the confirmed choice from the available information. Rockstar’s published materials do not confirm a PC release date, so waiting for a future announcement is the only responsible GTA VI option for a PC-only buyer.

You own Nintendo Switch 2
Modern Warfare 4 is confirmed with a native Switch 2 version. GTA VI is not listed for Switch 2 in Rockstar’s published materials, making Modern Warfare 4 the available choice between these two games.
You own only PS4 or Xbox One
Modern Warfare 4 is ruled out by Activision’s explicit platform list. GTA VI also has no documented older-console edition in Rockstar’s published materials. You need a current-generation console or a confirmed alternative before either purchase is appropriate.
You want a boxed collector-style purchase
GTA VI’s physical package does not provide a disc; it contains a download code and has region/account restrictions. If a disc is essential to you, do not mistake the GTA VI box for a traditional physical installation. For Modern Warfare 4, inspect the exact retailer listing because Activision’s announcement does not establish one universal physical format.
