Rockstar says it avoids naming specific real-world politicians and movements in GTA 6 because the game is made over years and jokes tied to a particular moment could feel dated by release. Rupert Humphries, Rockstar’s senior vice president of narrative, told LOVE Magazine that the aim is to make a game that feels specific to its release era without reflecting the exact world around it. The remarks were reported by VGC and other outlets around October 6, 2026.
Why does Rockstar avoid real political names in GTA 6?
Humphries described the choice as a matter of timing and specificity, not a stated legal concern. Rockstar develops its games over years; a joke built around one politician, event, or movement could lose its relevance before players encounter it. As he put it: “Because we are trying to make games that feel very specific to the moment they are released, but at the same time, not reflective of the exact world we live in, we don’t want to be too specific about any particular person, event, movement or anything like that.”

The game’s setting, Leonida, is Rockstar’s fictional Florida. Humphries said the world includes political and cultural satire through election signs, campaign robocalls, radio commercials, political talk shows, culture wars, and conspiracy theories. He described the broader tone as “not just holding up a mirror,” but making things “satirical, larger than life, and more grotesque.” He also said Rockstar had tried to build a world filled with “all the characters and culture wars necessary to make it feel alive.”

That means political satire is part of the setting, but it does not confirm that a particular real politician, party, or movement will appear under a thinly disguised name.
Will GTA 6 mention Trump or MAGA?
Rockstar has not, in the reported remarks, named Trump or MAGA, and no specific candidate names, parties, or in-game stand-ins have been confirmed. Trump and MAGA comparisons in coverage are interpretations by outlets, not statements attributed to Humphries. Whether characters or jokes evoke real US politicians, and how direct those parallels might be, remains unknown.

How does GTA 6 compare with earlier Grand Theft Auto games?
Humphries said previous GTA games generally did not focus much on national politics: “If you go back to previous GTAs, there’s never really been much focus on national politics.” He cited GTA IV as a notable exception, with references to the Patriot Act and the rise of Homeland Security against the backdrop of post-9/11 New York.
