Rockstar says GTA 6 will let players approach some missions with more freedom, including choosing different routes through a building or ignoring a suggested escape route during a police chase. That flexibility has limits: the developer says missions may guide players when a story moment needs to land, and the examples come from interviews about previewed content—not an independent audit of every mission in the final game.
What “more freedom” means in GTA 6 missions
Rob Nelson, Rockstar North co-studio head and head of development, said the team made a conscious effort to open missions up where possible. The goal, as he described it, is to make systems-based missions feel more consistent with the open world rather than making every objective depend on one prescribed route.
In an October 2026 interview transcript, Nelson put the tradeoff this way: “We are always trying to find that balance between freedom and storytelling, as you say. It is a challenge and sometimes when you are trying to create a specific or hopefully compelling narrative, the narrative aspect does need to take precedence at times – at least for us it does.” He added: “But with this game we have made a very conscious effort to open things up where possible, without compromising the quality of the experience.”

Different ways out of a tower block
Nelson described a tower-block mission that offers multiple possible routes out. The example points to flexibility in how a player handles an objective, rather than a guarantee that every mission has several exits or solutions.

Freedom to leave the suggested route in a police chase
In another described sequence, a mission becomes a police chase and presents an optimal escape route. The player can choose not to follow it; the interview says the mission continues through the wanted-level and robbery systems instead of insisting on that single route. It does not establish that every objective can be skipped or that ignoring guidance will always produce a different story outcome.
Where the game may still direct the player
Nelson said that too much freedom or too much choice can make it harder to keep mission quality high. When a specific narrative beat needs to land, Rockstar may give storytelling priority and guide the player more closely. The design tension is between systemic play that responds like the open world and staged sequences that need a particular point of view or timing.

Character switching also depends on the mission and story context. GamesRadar+’s coverage of a translated Famitsu interview describes a high-rise sequence locked to Jason, in contrast with missions that allow or require switching between Jason and Lucia. Some sections restrict switching for narrative or perspective reasons; others permit it or change the controlled character automatically.
What the interviews do—and do not—confirm
Nelson’s statement that “There’s no such thing as the ‘correct way to play,’ and we’ve worked hard to avoid telling people how they should play” is a description of Rockstar’s design intent, not a promise that every choice changes the plot. He also said player actions can influence how the world reacts, but the available interview descriptions do not specify how broadly that applies.

The evidence for mission flexibility is developer commentary and descriptions of previewed content. It supports the conclusion that Rockstar is trying to open up some missions, with concrete examples of alternate routes and a flexible chase. It does not verify how often those options appear across the complete final game or whether every mission supports multiple approaches.
