If your business is registered under GST in India, a period with no sales does not automatically mean you can skip filing. Which returns you must file, whether you can file quarterly, and whether a nil return is available depend on your taxpayer category, reporting period, and portal status. Use the GST Portal to confirm the requirements and dates for your tax period.

Which GST returns should a small business or freelancer know about?

Form or statement What it does What to check
GSTR-1 Reports outward supplies. The GST Portal describes it as a monthly or quarterly statement for normal and casual registered taxpayers making outward supplies. Check whether your taxpayer category is required to file it and whether your filing frequency is monthly or quarterly.
GSTR-3B A separate return filing workflow. Its relevant sections use input tax credit information from GSTR-2B. Review the return information and any auto-populated data before filing. A nil filing has specific eligibility checks.
GSTR-2B An input tax credit statement for the recipient. The GST Portal says supplier-filed GSTR-1 or GSTR-1A, IFF, and other specified data feed into it. Review and reconcile the information before using it in the relevant GSTR-3B sections.

GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B serve different purposes; filing one should not be treated as a substitute for the other. The GST Portal’s GSTR-1 FAQ lists exclusions from the ordinary GSTR-1 filing group, including composition taxpayers, input service distributors, and persons liable to deduct or collect tax under specified provisions. Your registration and taxpayer category matter, so confirm the forms applicable to you in the portal.

Do I need to file GST returns if I had no sales?

For GSTR-1, yes: the GST Portal says it must be filed even if there was no business activity during the tax period. Do not assume that having no sales removes the filing obligation.

When can GSTR-3B be filed as nil?

No sales alone is not enough to establish eligibility for a nil GSTR-3B. The GST Portal describes a nil period as one with no outward supplies, no inward supplies, and no tax liability. Its nil-filing workflow also requires no auto-populated return data, no manual entries, and no outstanding interest or late-fee liability. If any of those conditions is not met, do not treat the return as nil; follow the portal’s applicable filing workflow.

What is the GSTR-1 due date?

The GST Portal’s GSTR-1 FAQ lists the 11th of the succeeding month for monthly filers and the 13th of the month after the quarter for quarterly filers. These are standard dates, not guarantees for every period: government notifications can extend deadlines. Confirm the due date shown for your tax period in the GST Portal before planning a filing.

Can a small taxpayer file GST returns quarterly?

Eligible taxpayers can use the Quarterly Returns with Monthly Payment (QRMP) Scheme. Under the scheme, GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B are filed quarterly, while tax is paid monthly by challan. The GST Portal’s QRMP FAQ, accessed in 2026, states a PAN-based aggregate annual turnover threshold of up to ₹5 crore in the current and preceding financial year, where applicable, and says the latest due GSTR-3B must have been filed. Taxpayer-type restrictions and portal preconditions also apply. Check your eligibility and opt-in status in the GST Portal for the relevant quarter.

Choice Return filing cadence Payment and invoice considerations
Monthly filing Returns are filed monthly where that is the taxpayer’s applicable filing frequency. Use the due date applicable to the period shown in the GST Portal.
QRMP Eligible taxpayers file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B quarterly. Tax is paid monthly by challan. The optional Invoice Furnishing Facility (IFF) can be used for B2B invoices in the first two months of a quarter.

Quarterly returns do not mean that all GST-related activity happens only once per quarter: QRMP includes monthly tax payments. If furnishing B2B invoices during the first two months matters to your workflow, consider the optional IFF and check its current availability and applicable portal dates. The GST Portal controls the relevant selection window and period-specific dates.

How can I prepare GST returns?

The GST Portal lists three preparation routes for GSTR-1. Choose based on your invoice volume, process, and comfort with the tools; the availability of an option is not an endorsement of any particular commercial service.

Route What it involves Useful consideration
Online entry Enter information through the GST Portal. Consider whether direct portal entry suits the volume and complexity of your records.
Returns Offline Tool Prepare data using the GST Portal’s offline tool and upload it. Check that your files and workflow match the portal’s current tool requirements.
Third-party application through an ASP/GSP Use an optional application connected through an Application Service Provider (ASP) and Goods and Services Tax Suvidha Provider (GSP) route. Verify supported forms and filing frequency, data handling and access controls, current price, and available support before choosing a provider.

The official portal information establishes these preparation routes, but does not establish a best commercial provider or verify vendor pricing, security practices, or support. Those details need to be checked with each provider before you share business or taxpayer data.

Is the composition scheme right for a freelancer?

There is no blanket answer for freelancers. The GST Portal’s GSTR-1 FAQ establishes that composition taxpayers are outside the ordinary GSTR-1 filing group, but that fact alone does not show whether a particular freelancer qualifies for the composition scheme. Eligibility depends on the person’s circumstances and current rules. Check up-to-date official guidance or consult a qualified tax professional before choosing or changing a scheme.

A practical pre-filing check

  • Confirm your registration and taxpayer category, and identify which forms apply to the period.
  • Check whether your filing frequency is monthly or quarterly and, if considering QRMP, confirm eligibility and opt-in status in the portal.
  • Review outward-supply details for GSTR-1 and reconcile GSTR-2B information before using it in the relevant GSTR-3B sections.
  • For a nil GSTR-3B, verify every nil condition, including portal-populated data and outstanding interest or late fees.
  • Confirm the tax-period-specific due date in the GST Portal because standard dates may be extended.
