For an online purchase in India, check the supplier’s tax invoice—not only the order summary—for the seller’s identity, invoice details, item description, taxable value and GST particulars. If you return goods or an invoice needs correction, the supplier may issue a GST credit note. That tax document is separate from the money refund: GST law does not set one universal refund deadline for every online order.

What to check on an online purchase invoice

GST invoice requirements depend on the supplier, recipient and transaction. For a registered supplier, the invoice rules can require the following particulars:

  • Supplier’s name, address and GSTIN.
  • A unique, consecutive invoice number and the issue date.
  • Recipient details where required, including GSTIN or UIN for a registered recipient.
  • HSN or service accounting code and a description of the goods or services.
  • For goods, quantity and unit of measure.
  • Value, applicable tax rate and tax amount.
  • Place-of-supply details for an inter-state supply, reverse-charge indication where relevant, and the supplier’s signature or digital signature.

Additional particulars can apply depending on the recipient and supply. An unregistered seller cannot issue a GST tax invoice, though it may provide a commercial invoice. A marketplace-generated order page is not necessarily the supplier’s tax invoice. Identify the supplier and GSTIN on the invoice, and ask the seller or platform if it is unclear who supplied the item. CBIC’s GST invoice rules set out the prescribed details.

Is GST included in the online price?

There is no basis here to assume that every platform or product category presents tax in the same way. Check the order’s price breakdown and the final invoice to see the value and tax actually shown for your transaction. The invoice and tax-accounting rules do not, by themselves, establish how every consumer-facing listing must display its price. CBIC’s invoice rules describe invoice particulars.

What happens to GST when you cancel or return an order?

Return after supply

When goods are returned, or the taxable value or tax on an issued invoice was too high, the supplier may issue a GST credit note in the circumstances provided by law. It is linked to the original supply and the supplier’s records; it adjusts tax reporting. It is not the same as the seller or marketplace sending money back to the customer. CBIC’s invoice and credit-note rules and its sectoral GST FAQs describe these tax documents.

Marketplace tax calculations

CBIC’s e-commerce FAQ describes the operator’s relevant net taxable supplies as aggregate taxable supplies reduced by taxable supplies returned during the month. That calculation concerns tax reporting among the operator, suppliers and government. It does not determine whether a particular buyer is entitled to a refund, the payment method, or when a refund will arrive. CBIC’s sectoral FAQs cover e-commerce supplies and returns.

Cancellation before supply

The GST Act includes a refund-voucher mechanism for certain advances when no supply is made and no tax invoice follows. It is not a blanket rule for every cancellation: the transaction and current law matter. CBIC’s GST materials describe the relevant tax-document framework.

Who handles the money refund, and what rules apply?

The GST credit note is a supplier’s tax adjustment, not a customer’s self-service refund claim. A routine purchase return does not generally require an ordinary consumer to file a GST refund claim to recover GST; the payment refund is handled through the seller or platform process and applicable consumer law. Statutory GST refund applications concern defined taxpayer situations.

The Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 address specified cases. Rule 6(3) states that a marketplace e-commerce entity must not refuse a return or refund in cases including defective, deficient or spurious goods or services, goods or services that do not match advertised or agreed characteristics, and delivery later than the promised schedule—except where late delivery is due to force majeure. This is the rule’s stated scope, not a universal return right for every change of mind or every order. The Department of Consumer Affairs’ rules index lists later amendment and corrigendum materials, so check the current consolidated wording before applying it to an individual purchase. Read the 2020 Rules, including Rule 6(3) and check the Department’s rules index. The order’s terms also matter. GST law itself does not supply one refund deadline for all online purchases.

Common invoice and refund problems

The invoice does not show my GSTIN

Recipient particulars depend on whether you are registered and on the supply. The rules provide for a registered recipient’s GSTIN or UIN and prescribe separate particulars for some unregistered recipients. If your transaction qualifies and the invoice is incomplete, ask the seller or platform to correct it. CBIC’s invoice rules set out the requirements.

I returned the item but cannot find a credit note

Ask the seller or platform for the corrected invoice or credit-note record. Keep the order confirmation, payment record, return confirmation and any refund confirmation. Document flows vary, and there is no universal marketplace workflow or deadline established here. If the consumer issue remains unresolved, use the platform’s stated grievance channel and the applicable consumer process; check the current official instructions rather than relying on an assumed contact route.

Where do I download the invoice?

The supplier is the key identity on the tax invoice; the marketplace may make a copy available, but the supplier shown can vary by transaction. There is no universal download path across platforms. Check the order’s invoice or documents area, then contact the platform or seller if the supplier invoice is missing. GST Portal guidance for GSTR-1 concerns taxpayer reporting, including outward supplies and credit/debit notes; it is not a set of consumer instructions for downloading invoices from every marketplace.
