A citation is a route to evidence, not proof that an answer is true. To check a cited answer, trace each important claim to the relevant passage, see whether that passage supports the claim as written, and assess whether the source is suitable and current for that subject.
How to check a claim against its citation
- Separate the answer into claims. Check each material factual statement on its own. A link beside a paragraph may support one sentence but not the others.
- Open the cited source. Find the passage the answer relies on; do not treat a search-result snippet, page title, or clickable link as evidence by itself. OpenAI advises readers to inspect citations and the sources behind them (OpenAI Help Center: Searching with ChatGPT).
- Compare the passage with the wording. Check names, dates, quantities, scope, qualifiers, and cause-and-effect language. Ask whether the source supports the whole statement, not merely a related point. Google Cloud describes full entailment as the standard for grounding: a partly supported statement does not count as grounded (Google Cloud: Check grounding with RAG).
- Assess the source for this specific claim. Consider who published it, the publisher’s authority on the subject, the evidence and methods used, the source’s purpose, and its relevance. The UK House of Commons Library highlights accuracy, authority, motivation, and relevance as useful evaluation criteria (How to evaluate sources).
- Check the date if the fact can change. Look for the publication or update date and decide whether it is recent enough for the claim. There is no single freshness cutoff that works for every topic; a historical fact and a current service policy have different needs. OpenAI specifically recommends checking source dates (OpenAI Help Center: Searching with ChatGPT).
- Verify consequential or uncertain claims elsewhere. Prefer primary evidence where appropriate—such as an official document, dataset, or direct test—and compare with an independent, reputable source. The Commons Library advises checking generated information independently and points to sources such as official statistics and primary legislation (Working with AI and spotting AI-generated text).
What counts as support?
A source supports a claim when its evidence matches the claim’s full meaning and scope. A source that confirms a person’s name but gives a different date does not support a statement containing both details. Likewise, evidence for a general trend does not automatically establish a specific number, and a source describing a correlation does not establish causation.
Keep the answer’s qualifications in view. If a source applies only to one country, edition, time period, or set of conditions, a broader unqualified claim overstates what it establishes. Google Cloud’s grounding guidance makes this distinction explicit: partial entailment is not grounding (Google Cloud: Check grounding with RAG).

When sources disagree, compare them on the factors that matter to the exact claim rather than counting links or choosing the newest page automatically.

- Authority: Is the publisher qualified to establish this kind of fact?
- Directness: Does it present original evidence, or repeat another source’s account?
- Accuracy and method: Can you see how the information was produced, and is the method appropriate?
- Relevance: Does the evidence address the precise question and population, place, or period in the claim?
- Date: Is it current enough for a fact that may have changed?
- Independence: Are the sources independently confirming the point, or repeating the same underlying report?
These checks follow common source-evaluation dimensions described by the House of Commons Library (How to evaluate sources). They are a judgment aid, not a validated numerical scoring system.

A citation makes it easier to inspect an answer’s basis, but it cannot guarantee that the answer is correct or that the source has been represented fairly. AI Literacy at the Technical University of Munich cautions that grounding and citations help with checking but do not guarantee correctness (How AI answers and why it can be wrong).

Citation problems can include a missing or mismatched source, a passage that does not support the attached claim, or a quotation or reference that cannot be found. OpenAI warns that citations and search results can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect, and that answers may include fabricated citations or quotes (Does ChatGPT tell the truth?). A qualitative FAccT 2025 study reports participant observations of unsupported citations and misattribution in generative-search answers; it does not establish a universal error rate across products (Search Engines in the AI Era).

If a link is dead, the cited passage is missing, or the evidence does not match the wording, treat the claim as unverified and seek better evidence. A broken citation is not evidence that the claim is true—or false.
