Ground noise injection can mean either unwanted electrical noise entering a ground conductor in an interconnected system or the deliberate application of a disturbance during electromagnetic-compatibility (EMC) testing. The phrase has no single universal definition covering both uses. In everyday equipment troubleshooting, it usually describes the first problem; in a lab, it can describe a test method.
What ground noise injection means in interconnected equipment
When devices are connected by data cables, their signal references and safety-ground connections can sit at different voltages. Noise current entering a ground conductor can contribute to that difference. A cable connecting the devices may then provide a path for current between their references.
Schneider Electric’s White Paper 8, Revision 2, describes one possible source: power-supply filters can couple common-mode and normal-mode noise from power lines into ground. Ground faults, currents between separate panels, and induced currents can also contribute to differences between equipment references. The specific cause depends on the installation.

Ground-reference voltage is not the same as common-mode noise
Inter-system ground noise is a voltage difference between the grounds or references of connected devices. Common-mode noise, as distinguished in the white paper, is noise between hot and neutral measured with respect to ground. They are separate issues and can occur independently. A power-protection device that addresses common-mode noise does not necessarily correct a ground-reference difference carried through a data connection.

What it can do to connected equipment
If a data link connects devices at different reference voltages, current may flow through the connection. Possible consequences include corrupted communications, interface damage, and, in some cases, heating of data cabling. The white paper names RS-232, parallel, and USB as examples of connections susceptible to inter-system ground noise. Ethernet and fiber are cited as electrically isolated examples.
How to reduce risk without compromising electrical safety
Protective earth is a safety connection, not a noise-control accessory to remove. Neil Rasmussen, identified in Schneider Electric White Paper 8, Revision 2, as a Senior VP of Innovation, warns: “Ground wire disconnection should never be performed because it is illegal and presents a severe shock hazard.” Do not defeat or disconnect protective earth to address noise.

- For vulnerable data links, the white paper’s operational guidance is to keep the connection short and power interconnected equipment from the same branch circuit.
- Do not assume that a surge protector, power conditioner, or UPS will resolve every ground-reference problem; equipment that addresses noise on AC power may not address noise entering through a data connection.
- If you encounter voltage differences, warm cables, damaged equipment, or connections across different building circuits, stop treating the issue as a routine cable problem and consult a qualified electrical or EMC professional.
The white paper gives an illustrative ground-fault surge range from a few volts to more than half the rated power voltage—120 VAC or 230 VAC, depending on grounding-system quality. This is the document’s example, not a general measurement or a prediction for a particular installation.

In an EMC test, injection is deliberate: a controlled disturbance is applied to assess how a device behaves under interference. Conducted-immunity testing evaluates a device’s ability to withstand RF disturbance voltages and currents coupled through external wiring. This laboratory use of “injection” is different from unwanted noise entering an installation’s ground conductor.

Conducted injection through wiring
Texas Instruments’ application report SNLA466A, marked August 2024 and revised October 2024, illustrates an industrial Ethernet conducted-immunity setup using an RF generator, attenuator, coupling/decoupling network (CDN), injection port, and device under test. The report points to IEC 61000-4-6 for test details. This is a test arrangement, not a household noise remedy.
Non-contact coil-based research
A 2025 early-access article by Lee and coauthors describes a flexible-PCB, dual-coil system that injected and sensed RF noise on a mobile-phone camera module to estimate relative immunity. The authors report that the injected disturbance induced a malfunction in their device under test. That study result does not establish broad applicability or certification to an EMC standard.

These methods answer different testing needs. Selecting or designing a test requires attention to its purpose, coupling method, frequency range and bandwidth, disturbance level, measurement accuracy, device geometry, and applicable standard; the methods are not interchangeable simply because both involve noise injection.
How measurement setup can affect an apparent noise problem
An oscilloscope probe can itself pick up or introduce noise through its ground path, so a measurement may reflect the setup as well as the circuit. Tektronix’s application note on single-ended measurements with a differential probe says that short probe-ground connections help and describes differential probes as avoiding an added probe-ground connection and reducing common-mode noise.

A differential probe is a measurement tool, not a ground-noise injector or a fix for an installation fault. Match any probe to the measurement’s voltage and common-mode ratings, bandwidth, connection style, and application. A qualified professional should handle electrical installation changes.
