Zach Edey remains on track for the Memphis Grizzlies’ Opening Night, according to an October 2, 2026 report attributed to The Daily Memphian’s Drew Hill. Memphis was still evaluating the center during training camp, so the update is encouraging but does not confirm that he will play in the opener.
What the latest Zach Edey injury update says
The October 2 report describes Edey as “remaining on track for Opening Night.” That is a reporter-attributed status description, not a direct statement from Edey, general manager Zach Kleiman, or a team medical official.
The report also says Memphis continued evaluating Edey during training camp. It does not establish that he had returned to unrestricted practice or received final clearance to play.

A September 28 report said Kleiman had cleared Edey for on-court activity and that the center was on pace for Memphis’s regular-season opener against the Utah Jazz on October 21. Clearance for on-court activity is a reported recovery milestone; it is not the same as confirmation of game availability.

Why Edey had been sidelined
NBA.com’s player-news timeline says Edey underwent surgery in March 2026 to address discomfort and bone stress in his left ankle, ending his 2025–26 season. A separate March 25 item reports a procedure to address lingering discomfort in his left elbow. CBS Sports’ September 28 recap also describes procedures on both the ankle and elbow.
Edey’s 2025–26 production
Before his season ended, Edey averaged 13.6 points, 11.1 rebounds, 1.9 blocks, 1.1 assists, and 0.6 steals in 25.8 minutes across 11 regular-season appearances, according to CBS Sports’ player-news page. Those are his past-season figures, not a projection for 2026–27.
