Greenland’s Avannaata municipality approved a bounty of DKK 300 for each Greenland shark heart, with a target of 1,000 sharks. But The Guardian reported on October 5, 2026, that the plan was later dropped after Greenland’s government questioned its legality. The reported change does not rule out a future cull.
The dispute reflects two real concerns: fishers say sharks damage costly gear, while conservationists warn that a very slow-growing, late-maturing shark is unusually vulnerable to added deaths. Its reputation as the world’s oldest shark also needs a caveat: age estimates suggest some Greenland sharks may live for centuries, but they are not precise birthdays.
Is Greenland’s 1,000-shark cull still happening?
As reported on October 7, 2026, Avannaata Kommunia’s bounty proposal had been dropped after the Greenland government questioned whether it was legal, according to The Guardian. The municipality had approved DKK 300 per Greenland shark heart and set a target of 1,000 sharks, for a total allocation of DKK 300,000, according to Oceans North Kalaallit Nunaat. This is the reported status of that proposal, not a permanent ban on any future cull.

Fishers in northwest Greenland say Greenland sharks become entangled in longlines, gillnets and trawls, costing them time, catch and equipment. Kullorsuaq fishing association chair Timotheus Petersen told The Guardian that one longline costs 1,599 kroner and that replacing damaged gear adds expense. That is his account of a specific cost, not an independently established average price.

Mayor Lars Erik Gabrielsen described the proposed cull as a way to protect fishers’ income and catch. The proposal therefore addressed a practical local grievance, but the evidence supplied does not establish that removing sharks would prevent gear losses or improve catches.
How old can Greenland sharks get?
A 2016 study used radiocarbon dating of eye-lens tissue to estimate the ages of 28 female Greenland sharks. It estimated the oldest sampled shark at 392 years, with an uncertainty of ±120 years. NOAA presents the estimate for the largest sampled female as a range of 272–512 years and stresses that radiocarbon dating gives an estimate, not a definitive age. The finding supports describing Greenland sharks as among the longest-lived vertebrates known, or saying they may live for centuries—not claiming that a particular animal is certainly 400 or 500 years old.

Researchers used the eye lens because Greenland sharks lack the hard structures and growth bands commonly used to age sharks. Proteins in the lens form before birth and persist, making radiocarbon analysis possible. NOAA also reports that the sharks grow at less than 1 centimetre per year and can exceed 6 metres in length. These are biological summaries and estimates, not direct observations of a shark’s entire lifespan.
Why is such a long-lived shark vulnerable?
Extreme longevity is part of the risk because Greenland sharks grow slowly and mature very late. When a species replaces lost adults slowly, deaths from fishing can be difficult to offset. The 2025 assessment by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) identifies fisheries risk alongside the species’ slow life history.

Greenland sharks are also caught incidentally—known as bycatch—in commercial fisheries. COSEWIC reports a study estimate of at least 3,500 Greenland sharks caught worldwide each year, but warns that this may be a gross underestimate. Observer coverage in some fisheries is as low as 0–5%, reporting varies, and many areas lack data. In Canada, records from 2000–2021 yielded a mean estimate of 502.2 sharks annually from observed bycatch; that figure was not scaled up to account for incomplete observer coverage.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) moved the Greenland shark from Near Threatened to Vulnerable in its 2020 reassessment, as reported in COSEWIC’s 2025 assessment. The reassessment relied on reconstructed trends indicating declines and ongoing fisheries risks. Population size and trends remain poorly known, so the evidence supports concern about vulnerability—not a precise current population count or a claim that extinction is imminent.

Would a local cull solve the gear problem?
Oceans North Kalaallit Nunaat recognizes the difficulties fishers report but argues that a cull may not address the main causes of lost gear. The organization says sharks’ teeth are unlikely to cut ropes unless the animals struggle for extended periods, and points to weather, currents, rocky seabeds and ghost gear as other sources of equipment loss. It also argues that Greenland sharks travel long distances, potentially limiting the effect of removing animals in one area, and warns that discarded fish or carcasses could attract more sharks. These are the organization’s arguments, not settled findings about the outcome of Avannaata’s proposal.

What does the historical bounty record show?
The Guardian reported that a 2007 Danish Technical University report recorded 19,697 Greenland shark hearts in a bounty scheme in the former Uummannaq municipality from 1986 to 2001. Avannaata’s council also cited a separate Aasiaat bounty in the early 2000s. The number of hearts collected shows that sharks were brought in under those schemes; the available accounts do not show whether either program reduced gear loss or shark abundance.
What rules apply to Greenland shark fishing?
A 2022 Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) measure records that stock status in the NAFO Regulatory Area was unknown. Given the shark’s long lifespan, delayed maturity and low fecundity, the measure emphasizes precaution: it notes an existing ban on directed fishing and calls for prohibiting retention, minimizing incidental capture and mortality, and releasing live sharks in the least harmful manner. COSEWIC says NAFO parties agreed in 2022 to prohibit retention within that regulatory area. This is a regional measure; it should not be mistaken for a rule covering every fishery in Greenland or for the legal basis of Avannaata’s bounty proposal.
