Green is a convenient starting point, not a universal rule. Choose whichever screen color is least likely to appear in the subject, props, or visible scene. Green is often useful when you want a bright background and have enough light; blue can be the better choice when green must stay in the image, the scene is dark, or reflected green is difficult to control.
How do you choose between a green screen and a blue screen?
Chroma key removes a selected range of color from an image. That means the key color can disappear anywhere it appears—not just on the background. Green and blue are common choices because they often contrast with skin, hair, and clothing, but the right choice depends on the specific shot. Adobe explains the technique and the tradeoffs in its guide to blue screen versus green screen.
| Consideration | Green is often preferable when… | Blue is often preferable when… |
|---|---|---|
| Wardrobe and props | No green clothing or objects need to remain visible. | Green clothing, props, or equipment must remain visible. |
| Brightness | You want a brighter screen and have enough light to illuminate it evenly. Adobe notes green has higher luminosity than blue. | The scene is dark or a less luminous screen better suits the shot. |
| Color spill | You can keep the subject away from the screen and manage reflected green. | The subject must be close to the screen, or reducing reflected key color is especially helpful. |
| Visible environment | A large body of water is part of the scene and green will not remove important details. | Trees, grass, or other important green elements appear in the shot. |
| Hair and fine edges | The chosen lighting and background produce clean edges in a camera test. | Blue may provide stronger contrast with blond hair and can reduce spill in close setups, according to Adobe’s guide. |
These are practical tradeoffs, not guarantees or results from a controlled comparison. Test the actual camera, screen, wardrobe, lighting, and intended background before recording a full take. “Green screen” is a common name for the workflow; chroma-key software can select a color other than green or blue.
How do you set up a chroma-key background?
- Plan the frame and select the key color. Check the subject’s clothing and hair, props, and any scene elements that must remain. Choose the color that conflicts least with them.
- Cover the camera’s entire background view. Position a screen large enough to fill everything behind the subject in the frame. If uncovered corners appear, enlarge the screen or adjust the framing to avoid extra masking work.
- Make the surface smooth and taut. Fabric can work, but pull it tight and remove wrinkles; folds can cast shadows and create uneven color. Adobe describes nylon or spandex and chroma-key paint as options for a smooth, consistent surface in its green-screen setup guide.
- Light the screen evenly and separately from the subject. Diffused, nondirectional light helps limit shadows and color variation. Multiple lights can help spread illumination across a larger screen; LED panels or ring lights may suit smaller setups. Adobe quotes production head Mitch Apley recommending illumination “at about 40 to 50 per cent luminance.” Treat that as his practical recommendation, not a universal measured target for every screen, camera, or editing workflow.
- Leave space between the subject and the screen. Separation makes it easier to light the background without affecting the subject and can reduce reflected key color. The distance that works depends on the room and setup; Elgato’s chroma-key guidance is specific to its product and should not be treated as a universal distance specification.
- Key the background and inspect the result. In your editing software, sample the background color, then check hair, fine edges, clothing, and skin tones. Adobe’s Ultra Key instructions for Premiere cover key-color selection and spill suppression.
How do you fix common green-screen problems?
Clothing or props disappear
The key color is present in the subject or an object that needs to remain. Change to the other screen color, or change the wardrobe or prop. A keyer removes the selected color wherever it appears in the image.

Pull fabric taut, smooth out folds, and adjust the background lighting to make illumination more even. Keep screen lighting distinct from subject lighting where possible.
A green or blue fringe appears around the subject
Increase the distance from the screen if the room allows, then use the editor’s spill-suppression controls to reduce reflected background color. Spill suppression is cleanup, not a substitute for good lighting and separation. Adobe documents the control in its Premiere Ultra Key guide; the Fusion 9 Tool Reference describes spill color around semi-transparent edges and suppression options.
