Grayscale’s Zcash ETF, ticker ZCSH, had more than $500 million in assets under management (AUM) two weeks after launching, according to the issuer’s September 8, 2026 announcement. That report does not substantiate the headline claim that the fund topped $1 billion, and it does not establish that the broader crypto ETF market entered a new phase.

What Grayscale reported about ZCSH

ZCSH began trading on NYSE Arca on August 25, 2026. In a release dated September 8, Grayscale said AUM had grown to more than $500 million. The same release reported more than $70 million in cumulative inflows during the fund’s first two weeks as an exchange-traded product. Grayscale’s September 8 release, filed with the SEC, is the primary source for those figures.

AUM and inflows describe different things. AUM is the value of the assets held by the fund at a particular time; inflows track money entering the fund over a period. AUM can also change as the price of ZEC and other fund assets changes, so the two figures should not be treated as interchangeable.

Why the reported AUM included an affiliated investment

The September 8 release said the AUM milestone included both the reported cumulative inflows and an approximately $100 million investment by an affiliated entity. A separate SEC Form 8-K identifies the purchaser as DCG International Investments Ltd. On September 8, it acquired ZCSH shares by exchanging 85,705.32563297 ZEC through an authorized participant.

The filing says those shares had no preference features and were economically the same as other ZCSH shares. The affiliated purchase is therefore part of the fund’s reported scale, but it should not be described as independent third-party demand. Nor does the information establish that all of the fund’s AUM came from cash inflows: asset-price changes can affect AUM as well.

Does the milestone show a new phase for crypto ETFs?

The cited issuer announcement and SEC filing establish a launch, an AUM milestone, reported inflows and the affiliated investment. They do not provide a broader crypto ETF market statistic or an attributable statement establishing that the market as a whole has entered a defined new phase. ZCSH’s early growth is evidence about this fund, not by itself proof of a market-wide shift.

What ZCSH gives investors—and what it does not

Grayscale describes ZCSH as an exchange-traded product providing spot exposure to ZEC, Zcash’s token. The SEC-filed prospectus says the trust holds ZEC and issues shares representing beneficial interests in the trust. It also describes basket creation and redemption by authorized participants.

A ZCSH share is not the same thing as directly owning or transacting with ZEC. Grayscale’s August 25 launch announcement says the product is not registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940 and that an investment in the fund is not a direct investment in ZEC. The fund’s share value is intended to reflect the value of trust-held ZEC, less expenses and liabilities, but it can diverge from that underlying value.

Consideration ZCSH shares Direct ZEC
What you hold Shares representing beneficial interests in a trust that holds ZEC. ZEC itself.
How exposure is obtained Exchange-traded spot exposure through fund shares. Direct ownership of the token rather than fund shares.
Expenses and value tracking Trust expenses reduce the amount of ZEC represented by each share over time; share value can diverge from underlying value. No trust-share tracking relationship. The cited sources do not establish a current like-for-like total-cost comparison.
Custody and operations Investors hold fund shares; the trust holds ZEC. Ownership involves holding ZEC rather than fund shares. The cited sources do not provide enough detail for a full comparison of custody responsibilities or trading access.

The prospectus says the amount of ZEC represented by each share gradually declines as ZEC is used to pay the sponsor fee and other trust expenses. Consult the current prospectus for the applicable fee and operating terms. The sources cited here do not establish comparative tax treatment, brokerage availability or total cost, so those should not be assumed from the fund’s structure alone.

What the ETF’s privacy label means for Zcash

Zcash supports both transparent and shielded transactions; privacy is not automatic for every transaction. The prospectus describes shielded transactions as using zk-SNARKs to protect transaction amounts and sender and recipient information. Transparent transactions are publicly viewable and can allow selective disclosure.

For dated market context, Grayscale’s prospectus reports a maximum supply of 21 million ZEC, 16.7 million circulating ZEC and an aggregate Zcash market value of $6.7 billion as of June 30, 2026. It also identifies Zcash as the 12th-largest digital asset by market capitalization tracked by CoinMarketCap on that date. These are prospectus figures for that date, not current market measurements.

Risks to understand before considering ZCSH

Grayscale warns that ZCSH carries significant risk and heightened volatility, may not suit investors who cannot bear losing their entire investment, and is not a complete investment program. The prospectus also notes that the predecessor trust’s shares traded on OTCQX at substantial premiums and discounts. Those historical figures concern the predecessor trust and should not be read as ZCSH’s post-conversion trading performance.

The fund’s launch and reported asset growth do not remove the risks of ZEC’s price volatility, expenses or possible differences between share value and the trust’s underlying assets. Any decision requires reviewing the current prospectus and considering whether this form of exposure fits an individual’s circumstances.
