Grasshopper can give a solo operator or small team a separate business number on phones and computers they already own, without setting up a dedicated phone system. Its appeal is simplicity: business numbers, extensions, call routing, and messaging in an app-based service. The tradeoffs to weigh are plan limits, extra charges, and whether its feature set and support meet your needs—especially if you must move an existing number.
What Grasshopper is—and who it may suit
Grasshopper is a virtual business phone service, not a handset or a traditional phone system that requires dedicated desk phones. The company describes using a business number on existing mobile or desktop devices. You can select a local, toll-free, or vanity number, or request to port an existing number.
That setup may suit a solo business owner who wants business calls kept distinct from personal calls, or a small team that wants a shared professional phone presence without buying separate phone hardware. It is less obviously a fit if your workflow depends on a wide range of communications tools, intricate call handling, or integrations: confirm that the specific features you need are available on your plan before choosing it.

Grasshopper’s pricing page lists three tiers. The allowances below are the listed plan limits; the page also uses annual-billing and promotional language, so check the live checkout for the price, billing interval, taxes, and terms that apply to you.

The same pricing page lists additional phone numbers at $9 per month each and additional extensions at $3 per month each where charged. Business texting requires registration; the listed fees are a one-time $19.50 registration fee and a $1.50 monthly messaging fee. Grasshopper advertises a seven-day free trial. Treat these as page-listed figures, not a guaranteed quote: confirm current charges and how they apply to your plan at checkout.
Before comparing headline plan prices, work out how many separate numbers and extensions your team actually needs. Include recurring add-ons and texting fees in your estimate, and check whether any feature you want is included or separately priced.

Using devices you already have can spare you the cost and setup of a separate phone system. That describes the service model, not a guarantee about call quality: the available evidence does not establish performance across particular networks, devices, or locations.
What customer reviews say—and what they cannot prove
Capterra’s Grasshopper review page, shown as updated September 30, 2026, includes sharply different individual accounts. One reviewer reports good voice quality and helpful phone support; another describes a number-porting process that took months and dissatisfaction with support. These are examples of customer experiences, not a measured success rate or evidence of how often porting delays, call problems, or poor support occur.

TechRadar’s 2026 review characterizes Grasshopper as a small-business virtual phone service and says its feature set is more limited than some alternatives. That assessment may matter if your work needs more than a business number and basic call management; it does not make Grasshopper unsuitable for every small business.
What to check before you sign up
- Plan fit: Match the number of users, phone numbers, and extensions you need to the listed tier limits.
- Full cost: Confirm the current billing interval and checkout total, then account for extra numbers, extensions, texting registration, messaging fees, and any other add-ons you plan to use.
- Workflow fit: List the call-handling features, shared workflows, integrations, or other tools your business requires. Ask Grasshopper to confirm whether each is available on your chosen plan.
- Number porting: If keeping your current business number is essential, ask about the porting process, expected timing, and how to contact support if there is a problem before starting a transfer.
- Device fit: Decide whether apps on existing phones and computers suit your team better than dedicated desk phones or a broader communications suite.
TechRadar’s coverage names Quo and Zoom Phone as comparison candidates. Compare them against your actual requirements rather than assuming they are direct equivalents: feature coverage, plan limits, and the way each service fits your team can differ.

Grasshopper is worth considering if your priority is a distinct business number on devices you already own, with extensions and straightforward call-management tools. Its value depends on whether the plan allowances and available features match your operation without pushing the total cost up through extras. If you need a broader communications feature set—or cannot risk uncertainty around moving a business number—compare alternatives and get clear answers on plan availability, charges, porting, and support before committing.
