Grass and tree pollen allergies can cause the same symptoms, so sneezing, congestion, a runny or itchy nose, and watery eyes cannot identify the source on their own. In many parts of the United States, tree pollen appears earlier—often in late winter or spring—while grass pollen tends to follow in spring and summer. Local plants, climate, and weather can shift that pattern. Comparing symptoms with local pollen reports can help narrow down a likely trigger; an allergist can help determine specific sensitivities.

How symptoms compare

Both tree and grass pollen can trigger allergic rhinitis. Typical symptoms include sneezing, a stuffy or runny nose, an itchy nose or throat, and watery eyes. Cough or wheezing may also occur. Because the symptom patterns overlap, symptoms alone do not reliably distinguish a tree pollen allergy from a grass pollen allergy.

When tree and grass pollen seasons occur

In many U.S. locations, tree pollination starts before grass pollination. Trees may release pollen in late winter or early spring, while grasses commonly pollinate later in spring and into summer. This is a broad sequence, not a fixed calendar: local species and conditions affect both the start and duration of a season. The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) notes that tree pollen may begin as early as January in the South, and that Bermuda grass can release pollen for much of the year in southern states. Tropical climates and mild winters can also extend or advance grass pollen activity. ACAAI’s seasonal-allergy overview and its gardening guidance describe these regional variations.

Why a national calendar can mislead

Latitude, climate, the plants growing nearby, and weather all influence pollen exposure. Warm, windy days can increase airborne pollen, while cool nights followed by warm days can support pollen production. Rain can wash pollen from the air, but counts may rise after rainfall. Levels can peak in the morning in some circumstances, but the timing varies; do not treat a generalized time of day or seasonal calendar as a local prediction.

How to narrow down the likely trigger

  1. Track when symptoms begin and ease. Note the dates and circumstances rather than relying on symptoms to identify a pollen type.
  2. Compare your notes with local pollen information. Look separately at tree and grass reports for your area. A forecast predicts conditions; a pollen count is a measurement, so they are not interchangeable. AAAAI explains pollen counts and monitoring.
  3. Discuss persistent or unclear symptoms with an allergist. An allergist can assess suspected triggers and discuss whether testing is appropriate. Timing and local reports can provide clues, but they do not establish a diagnosis.

Other allergens or irritants may also contribute. Someone with seasonal symptoms may react to more than one pollen, or have perennial allergic rhinitis that worsens during pollen seasons. If symptoms persist year-round or do not fit the expected local pollen period, do not assume that one pollen type explains them. The AAAAI overview of allergic rhinitis discusses seasonal and perennial triggers.

Ways to reduce pollen exposure

  • Check local pollen and mold information to plan outdoor activity.
  • Keep home and car windows closed during allergy season.
  • After outdoor activity, shower, wash your hair, and change clothes.
  • For mowing and other outdoor chores, ACAAI advises using a NIOSH-rated 95 filter mask and taking appropriate medication beforehand. Follow medication guidance from a clinician.
  • When staying indoors is not practical during heavy pollen periods, mechanical barriers such as masks, nasal filters, or air purifiers may help reduce exposure to airborne allergens and irritants. AAAAI does not specify an air-purifier model or filtration standard in its general guidance.

Exposure-reduction measures do not reveal which pollen caused symptoms. An allergist can also discuss treatment options; immunotherapy is one option for some people with pollen-related seasonal allergies. Treatment decisions should be made with a clinician. See ACAAI’s seasonal-allergy guidance.

What pollen counts can—and cannot—tell you

A high local count can help explain when exposure may be greater, but it does not mean everyone will have symptoms. In a March 4, 2026 ACAAI statement, allergist Cherie Zachary, MD, said, “It’s important to remember that high pollen counts don’t always translate to symptoms for every person.” Counts are useful context alongside symptom timing, not a diagnosis.
