Do not power the graphics card again while liquid, moisture, or conductive residue may remain. Shut the computer down, unplug it, remove the card, and let it dry completely. Surface residue can sometimes be cleaned, but corrosion that has eaten traces, lifted pads, damaged connectors, or destroyed components requires board-level repair or replacement.
What to do immediately
- Shut the computer down normally if it still responds. If it is unsafe to do so, switch off the power supply and disconnect the mains cable.
- Remove the graphics card from the PCIe slot. Disconnect its auxiliary power leads and handle it by the edges.
- Stop repeated power tests. A damp or contaminated board can short, electrolytically corrode, or fail later even if it initially displays an image.
- Photograph both sides, the connectors, and the affected area before cleaning. Keep the photographs and purchase documentation for a possible warranty or service claim.
Look for green or white deposits, sticky drink residue, water marks, darkened copper, lifted pads, missing components, cracked PCB material, or damaged PCIe gold fingers. Corrosion may continue beneath components or solder mask, so a clean-looking surface does not prove the card is electrically sound.
When is it safe to reconnect the card?
ASUS advises allowing a liquid-exposed card to dry for 24 hours before reconnection and recommends contacting its service center for testing. Its guidance warns that oxidation and corrosion can cause sudden faults later. Treat 24 hours as a minimum drying period, not a guarantee that hidden residue or damage is harmless.

- Do not reconnect the card until it is fully dry and visibly free of conductive residue.
- Do not use a hair dryer, oven, heat gun, improvised reflow, or other high-heat method.
- Do not use strong compressed-air jets. ASUS warns that excessive pressure can damage PCB components or fan blades.
Cleaning light surface residue at home
Home cleaning is appropriate only for light, superficial contamination on an unpowered board. It cannot replace missing copper, rebuild eaten traces, reattach lifted pads, repair cracked PCB material, or revive failed components.
What you need
- High-purity isopropyl alcohol (99% is specified by iFixit for oxidation cleaning; ASUS also cites 70–75% isopropyl alcohol for wiping surface stains).
- A soft anti-static electronics brush or lint-free swab.
- Good ventilation, bright lighting, and a non-static work surface.
Careful cleaning procedure
- Confirm that the card is removed from the computer and disconnected from every power source.
- Use a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on the brush or swab. Never spray cleaner directly onto the PCB.
- Gently lift residue without scraping solder mask, silkscreen, components, or gold contacts.
- Use fresh swabs as contamination transfers off the board; do not spread sticky residue across a larger area.
- Leave the card undisturbed until all alcohol has evaporated and the board is completely dry. Inspect it again under magnification before any service test.
Do not use abrasive cloths, sandpaper, metal tools, household cleaners, or aggressive scrubbing. Abrasion can remove protective solder mask and plating, turning a surface problem into an open trace or unreliable connector.

Signs that cleaning will not be enough
Stop home work and obtain a board-level diagnosis if corrosion reaches any of the following:
- Traces or vias, especially where copper is dark, missing, or visibly eaten away.
- Surface-mount pads that are lifted, missing, or no longer bonded to the PCB.
- PCIe gold fingers, power connectors, fan headers, memory packages, GPU power circuitry, or other components.
- Cracks, delamination, bubbling, burnt areas, or missing parts.
- Persistent no-display, artifacting, crashes, overheating, fan-control faults, or abnormal power behavior after cleaning and drying.
A technician may need to remove components, map damaged nets, rebuild traces or pads, replace parts, and test the card under controlled current limits. A general computer shop that only swaps parts may not have this capability.

Repair, replacement, or a cautious clean: how to choose

Could corrosion void the graphics-card warranty?
Often, yes. ASUS lists oxidation on the PCB or components, liquid intrusion, and water stains on the PCB among customer-induced-damage conditions. MSI likewise lists PCB oxidation as customer-induced damage that may lead to a repair estimate or warranty exclusion. The exact decision depends on the model, region, inspection, and warranty terms, so photograph the card and contact the manufacturer or seller before altering it when a claim is important.
Do not assume a remaining warranty period guarantees coverage. NVIDIA states a three-year warranty for new NVIDIA-branded GeForce products, subject to model- and region-specific terms; liquid damage and corrosion can still be excluded under those terms.

How to approach a repair service
- Send the photographs, purchase date, model number, and a precise description of the liquid exposure.
- Ask whether the shop performs component-level PCB repair rather than only cleaning or replacement.
- Request a diagnosis before authorizing work, including whether traces, pads, connectors, or power components are affected.
- Ask how the repaired card will be tested and whether the repair carries its own written warranty.
- Compare the quoted repair cost and turnaround with a replacement card and the value of preserving the existing setup.
If the card is still under warranty, contact the manufacturer first and describe the damage accurately. Do not conceal liquid exposure or continue powering it in the hope that intermittent operation will improve the claim.

What not to do
- Do not keep reinstalling the card to see whether it works.
- Do not spray contact cleaner or alcohol directly onto the board.
- Do not scrape corrosion with a blade, screwdriver, abrasive pad, or sandpaper.
- Do not blast the card with an air compressor.
- Do not bake, heat-gun, or reflow a liquid-damaged card without proper board-repair equipment.
- Do not treat a successful boot as proof that corrosion is gone; latent failures can appear later.
