Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a flat, honeycomb-like lattice, one atom thick. It is considered revolutionary because it combines electrical, thermal, optical and mechanical properties in an unusual way, and because its discovery earned the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics. The label is best understood as a scientific milestone that opened a large field of study. It does not mean graphene has replaced existing materials in everyday products. Commercial use exists, but it is narrow, application-specific and difficult to scale.
What graphene is
In graphene, each carbon atom bonds to three neighbours in a repeating hexagonal pattern, forming a sheet that is only one atomic layer thick. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) describes it as a single atomic layer, and the Nobel Prize announcement describes it as carbon in a flat form just one atom thick. Graphite, the material in pencil leads, is a stack of many such layers held together by weak forces. That structure is why graphene can be separated from graphite at all, and it is the starting point for almost every method used to make it.

Why researchers value its properties
Most of the enthusiasm comes from a handful of measured values. The table below lists figures reported in the peer-reviewed review Graphene Properties, Synthesis and Applications: A Review (2022). These are values reported for particular samples and measurement setups. They are not specifications for a graphene product you can buy, and they do not describe what a typical sheet made by a commercial process will deliver.
| Property | Value reported in the 2022 review | Plain meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Specific surface area | about 2,600 m²/g | Very large surface area for each gram of material |
| Electron mobility | 200,000 cm²/V·s | How easily electrons move through the material |
| Thermal conductivity | 3,000–5,000 W/m·K | How well it conducts heat |
| Optical transparency | 97.4% | Share of light passing through the material |
| Young’s modulus | 1 TPa | Stiffness, meaning resistance to elastic deformation |
The Nobel announcement uses qualitative language for the same traits: graphene is a good electrical conductor, an excellent heat conductor and almost completely transparent. NIST’s graphene overview, updated 2 September 2025, highlights carrier mobility and tunable electronic properties as features relevant to small devices such as transistors or sensors. Those are reasons for interest in device research. They are not evidence that graphene has displaced silicon in ordinary electronics.

Why it was called revolutionary
For decades, physicists believed that a crystal only one atom thick could not remain stable. Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov challenged that view by extracting a one-atom-thick flake from graphite using adhesive tape. A 2024 editorial in Nature Electronics, published 24 October 2024, marks the 20th anniversary of the 2004 Science paper on atomically thin carbon films, which is the work that brought such films into wide scientific view.
The 2010 Nobel Prize
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the award in a release dated 5 October 2010. The release states:
“The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2010 to Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov”

The Graphene Revolution: The weird science of the ultra-thin (Hot Science)
- Orders are despatched from our UK warehouse next working day.
The citation reads: “for groundbreaking experiments regarding the two-dimensional material graphene.” The prize recognised experimental proof that stable monolayer graphene could be made and studied, not a finished technology.
Why the label stretches further than the products
The scientific impact has been large. The 2024 editorial says graphene devices have developed substantially, yet much two-dimensional material research is still confined to laboratories. Most of the revolution so far is in knowledge, methods and prototypes, rather than in consumer goods built from graphene.
Properties are not the same as products
A graphene material’s performance depends on how it was made. The 2022 review covers several synthesis routes, and each produces material with different characteristics and suitability. Treat any single property figure as tied to one route and one sample.

Mechanical exfoliation
This is the adhesive-tape method used in the 2004 work and recognised by the Nobel committee. It separates thin layers from graphite. It is well suited to laboratory studies of pristine flakes, but the flakes vary in size and layer count and are not a continuous sheet suitable for large-area manufacturing.

Graphite is first oxidised into graphene oxide, which is then chemically reduced back toward graphene. This route is chemically flexible and can produce material in bulk. The reduced product generally contains more structural defects than pristine graphene, which lowers electrical and thermal performance compared with the best-case values in the table above.
Chemical vapour deposition
Carbon is deposited from a gas onto a substrate to grow graphene sheets. The 2022 review lists this as a major route for larger-area films. Quality depends on the substrate, the growth conditions, and any transfer step that moves the film to a working surface.
What to check when comparing graphene materials
- Form and layer count: single-layer, few-layer, graphene oxide, or reduced graphene oxide each behave differently.
- Production method and quality: the route determines defects, size and reproducibility.
- The property that matters for the use: conductivity, surface area, transparency and stiffness are not interchangeable.
- Reproducibility and scale: a result from a few flakes does not show that a batch process will match it.
- Evidence maturity: laboratory result, pilot production or commercial deployment are different claims.
Where graphene is used today
Graphene’s uses fall into three broad groups, and the evidence for each differs.
| Application area | What the sources establish | Evidence maturity |
|---|---|---|
| Electronics and sensors | NIST cites carrier mobility and tunable properties for transistors and sensors. The 2024 Nature Electronics editorial reports substantial device development. | Laboratory and prototype work is substantial. Integrating new materials into commercial foundries remained problematic as of 2024. |
| Protective coatings and composites | The 2022 review surveys these areas. | Product-level evidence is not stated in these sources. |
| Electrochemical energy storage | The 2022 review surveys these areas. | Commercial status is not stated in these sources. |
| Products across a publicly funded program | The European Commission’s assessment of the Graphene Flagship, 19 September 2024, reports more than 100 products brought onto the market. | Program-level output. It does not show that each product was graphene-only, nor that graphene has reached mass adoption. |
Electronics and sensors
Graphene is attractive for electronics because electrons move through it very quickly, and its electronic behaviour can be tuned. The obstacle is manufacturing. Making graphene reliably and fitting it into existing chip production lines is still an unresolved engineering problem, which is the central point of the 2024 editorial.

Graphene and graphene-derived materials are discussed in the 2022 review for protective coatings and electrochemical energy storage. These are application areas that have been explored. They are not a guarantee that a given coating or battery on sale contains graphene in a useful amount.

Market and program figures
The European Commission’s assessment reports that the Graphene Flagship created 20 spin-offs, which raised more than €170 million in venture capital, filed more than 80 patents and brought more than 100 products onto the market. These are figures for one publicly funded program. They do not measure graphene adoption across the economy.
The 2024 Nature Electronics editorial also relays an estimate that the graphene market could reach US$1.5 billion by 2027. That is an estimate cited by the editorial, not a realised market figure.
How to judge a graphene claim
Because “graphene” is now used as a marketing word, a short set of checks helps separate laboratory results from product claims:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Is the material monolayer graphene, few-layer graphene, or a graphene oxide derivative?
- Is graphene the active ingredient, or a filler in a coating, plastic or battery electrode?
- Do the numbers describe the product as sold, or a test sample under specific conditions?
- Is there independent test data with stated measurement conditions?
- Does a consumer label mentioning graphene establish laboratory-grade performance? It does not.
Graphene is a real and important material, but its revolutionary reputation rests on what it has made possible in research. Its place in products is still being built, one application at a time.
