Granite Construction announced a $324.8 million Big Creek Tunnel contract on October 1, 2026. AD HOC NEWS later reported that Granite shares rose 2.56% to $119.84 at the October 2 close. The timing is clear, but the available evidence does not establish that the contract caused the stock move.

Granite Construction (NYSE: GVA) said on October 1, 2026, that the Granite-Super Joint Venture—Granite and Super Excavators—had been awarded a contract by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) for the Big Creek Tunnel project in Cleveland, Ohio. The award came the previous day, but sequence alone does not prove cause. Granite’s announcement confirms the contract details, not why investors traded the shares on October 2. The defensible account is that the share gain was reported after the award announcement, not that the award has been shown to have produced it.

What the Big Creek Tunnel project involves
Granite describes Big Creek Tunnel as the final one of seven large-diameter combined-sewer-overflow storage tunnels in NEORSD’s Project Clean Lake. The company says the program began in 2011 and is a $3 billion, 24-year effort to improve regional water quality; those program figures are attributed by Granite to NEORSD.
The announced scope includes 22,300 linear feet of 20-foot-diameter main tunnel and 3,115 linear feet of ancillary tunnels: adits, an overflow tunnel, a connecting tunnel, and a dewatering tunnel. The work also includes multiple shafts, diversion structures, gate and screening structures, gate-control vaults, consolidation sewers, an overflow box culvert, site work, restoration, and utilities. Granite scheduled construction to start in fall 2026 and expected completion in winter 2030. The company says the completed project is intended to eliminate 550 million gallons of combined-sewer releases annually. That is a projected outcome, not a measured reduction already achieved.

How the award fits Granite’s recent financial picture
Granite’s second-quarter 2026 results cover the quarter ended June 30, before the October contract award. Revenue rose to $1.46 billion from $1.13 billion in the year-earlier quarter. At the same time, the company reported a GAAP net loss attributable to Granite of $278 million, or $6.36 per diluted share, compared with net income of $72 million, or $1.42 per diluted share, a year earlier. Granite attributed the loss primarily to a $360 million non-operating loss on convertible-debt transactions.

What CAP means
As of June 30, Granite reported CAP of $7.4 billion, up $250 million sequentially. The company defines CAP as expected future revenue from executed contracts, including joint-venture shares under its stated accounting treatment and certain construction-management contracts when execution and funding are probable. CAP is not recognized revenue, profit, or cash on hand; the reported amount is a company-defined forward-work measure.

What to take from the headline
The contract is a substantial infrastructure award with a defined multiyear scope. A secondary news report places a 2.56% share-price increase on the following day.
