Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is not currently free through the Rockstar Games Launcher. Rockstar gave away the classic Windows PC version when the launcher launched in 2019, but that limited-time promotion had an October 8, 2019 deadline.
If you did not claim the game during that window, installing the launcher now does not create a free entitlement. Rockstar currently lists the original PC trilogy for $29.99 and the separate remastered Definitive Edition trilogy for $59.99.

The free San Andreas promotion ended in 2019
Rockstar announced the free offer alongside the launch of the Rockstar Games Launcher in October 2019. The promotion covered the classic PC version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, not the later remaster.

Rockstar initially described the giveaway as available “for a limited time.” A subsequent announcement specified that users needed to download the launcher by Tuesday, October 8, 2019 to receive the game. Anyone who claimed it during the promotion was told that San Andreas would be added permanently to their Rockstar Games/Social Club library.

That permanent-library language applies to people who claimed the game before the deadline. It does not mean the offer remained available indefinitely, and downloading the launcher today does not establish a new entitlement.

Rockstar’s current store separates the classic releases from the remastered versions:

The classic trilogy store listing is the relevant product for the original PC release. The Definitive Edition listing is a separate product released on PC on November 11, 2021.

The two PC releases should not be treated as interchangeable:
- Classic San Andreas: the original version included in the $29.99 Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy package. This is the version Rockstar gave away in 2019.
- San Andreas – The Definitive Edition: the remastered release included in the $59.99 Definitive Edition trilogy.
The giveaway was not a way to obtain the remaster. If an old article or social-media post says that the free promotion included San Andreas – The Definitive Edition, it is describing the offer incorrectly.
How previous claimants can check their library
If you downloaded the Rockstar Games Launcher during the 2019 promotion, the first thing to check is your existing library—not a new store claim page.
- Open the Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Sign in with the Rockstar account used when the promotion was claimed.
- Open the Games section.
- Look for the classic version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas among the account’s available titles.
If it is missing, confirm that you are using the original account. Reinstalling the launcher may fix a damaged installation, but Rockstar does not say that reinstalling can create eligibility for an expired promotion.
Users may also encounter the message “This feature is not currently available” when attempting to access the old offer. Rockstar’s support documentation associates that issue with Store Menu availability; it is not evidence that the giveaway has been reopened.

What to do if the game is already installed
For an existing copy that does not launch correctly, Rockstar provides a file-verification option:
- Open the launcher and select Settings.
- Under My installed games in the left sidebar, select Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
- Under Verify game file integrity, select Verify Integrity.
If verification does not resolve the launch problem, Rockstar’s documented troubleshooting path is:
- Open Settings.
- Select the game under My installed games.
- Make sure Enable cloud saves is checked.
- Under Launcher settings, open Account information.
- Next to Delete local profile, select Delete, then choose Confirm.
- Sign in again and launch the game.
Deleting the local profile resets automatic sign-in. You will need to enter the Rockstar account email address and password again, but this process does not remove an owned game from the account.
Classic PC version: system requirements
The classic PC version is lightweight by modern standards, although Rockstar’s current support information lists Windows 10 64-bit as the required operating system. The listed requirements include:

The launcher may also install or require supporting components such as DirectX, Chromium, Visual C++ and Rockstar authentication software. Rockstar lists Windows 10 64-bit and an internet connection for launcher sign-in and game activation as well.
Why the old headline keeps appearing
Many search results and posts repeat the original 2019 launch announcement without making its date or deadline clear. That can make an expired giveaway look like a current launcher benefit. The important distinctions are:
- The offer was limited-time, not permanent.
- The deadline was October 8, 2019.
- The free title was the classic PC version.
- The Definitive Edition is a separate 2021 release.
- Reinstalling the launcher does not restore an entitlement that was never claimed.
Rockstar could launch a new giveaway in the future, but that would need to be a separately dated promotion. There is no verified current free San Andreas claim path based on the expired 2019 offer.
