You do not need a reservation or timed-entry ticket to enter Grand Teton National Park. In 2026, the standard seven-day entrance fee is $35 per private vehicle, $30 per motorcycle, or $20 per person arriving on foot, bicycle, skis, or a similar way. Overnight backpacking and all watercraft do require permits, and your packing list depends on the activity: backpackers need approved bear-resistant food storage, while everyone boating or floating needs an accessible, properly sized life jacket.

Do you need a reservation to enter Grand Teton?

No. The National Park Service says reservations and timed entry are not required to enter Grand Teton; visitors may arrive at any time. Busy periods can still bring traffic lines and crowded sites. Entrance access is separate from lodging and campground bookings, which should be arranged independently and can fill well in advance. See the NPS Fees & Passes page for current entry details.

How much is the Grand Teton entrance fee in 2026?

The NPS lists these standard seven-day entrance fees for 2026. The vehicle fee covers entry for a private vehicle; the per-person fee applies to visitors aged 16 or older entering without a vehicle.

The NPS also lists an additional $100 fee for non-U.S. residents aged 16 and older, unless admitted with an Annual or America the Beautiful Pass. Fee operations have been cashless since May 1, 2026, according to the NPS fee FAQ; plan to pay using an accepted cashless method and confirm current payment guidance.

Which activities need a permit?

  • Overnight backcountry trips: A backcountry camping permit is required. The permit fee is separate from park entrance fees.
  • Watercraft: A park boat permit is required for all watercraft, motorized or not. This includes stand-up paddleboards and windsurfing boards. Boats entering the park must stop for an aquatic invasive species inspection.
  • Special events: Events such as weddings and commitment ceremonies also require permits; consult the relevant NPS permit information for the event.

A permit is not generally required just to take a day hike, but check the park’s activity-specific rules and current conditions when planning a route.

How do Grand Teton backcountry permits work?

For 2026, NPS lists a $20 flat permit fee plus $7 per person per night. Entrance fees are additional. Approximately two-thirds of backcountry permits are made available as walk-ups. During the peak period from May 1 through October 31, walk-up permits are first-come, first-served and may be obtained one day before the trip begins; they cannot be issued by phone or online during that period.

What should you bring for a Grand Teton visit?

For an overnight backpacking trip

  • Use an Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee-approved bear-resistant food container unless the specific site provides food-storage boxes.
  • Keep food, garbage, toiletries, and other scented items in bear-resistant storage when they are not in immediate use.
  • Permit holders can check out a bear canister free, so buying one is not necessary if a loaner is available. Confirm checkout arrangements with the NPS bear-resistant food storage guidance.

For boating or floating

  • Bring a properly sized, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket for every person, kept accessible.
  • Children under 13 must wear a life jacket while a vessel is underway unless they are inside an enclosed cabin.
  • Have the required park boat permit and allow time for the aquatic invasive species inspection.

The NPS warns that there are no lifeguards in the park and that water remains cold even in summer. Swimming, boating, floating, and wading are at your own risk. Read the NPS safety guidance before entering park waters.
