For a straightforward Linux installation, Grafana’s package-based procedure sets up Tempo in monolithic mode on one node, using local storage. It is intended for development and evaluation—not a production-ready architecture. The steps below use Debian-compatible Linux on AMD64; use the package and installation method that match your distribution and CPU architecture.

Before you install

You need a Linux host, administrator access (root or sudo), and permission for Tempo to access its configuration and storage directories. To test trace ingestion, install OpenTelemetry’s telemetrygen. A running Grafana instance is optional and is only needed if you want to explore traces visually.

Check whether the example fits your host

For a monolithic Tempo instance on one node, Grafana’s current Linux guide suggests 4 CPUs and 4–8 GB of memory as a starting point. It suggests 16 GB or more for higher-demand cases such as sharing the host with other components, enabling metrics-generator, moderate or high ingestion, heavier live-trace buffering or querying, or wanting benchmarking headroom. These are guide-specific starting points, not hard minimums or production sizing guarantees. Production capacity depends on workload and infrastructure—including ingestion rate, tenant count, query concurrency, retention, metrics-generator settings, and object-store performance—so validate it under your expected load. Grafana Labs’ Linux deployment guide (viewed October 2026) provides the sizing context.

Choose a package for your distribution and architecture

The commands below install the Linux AMD64 Debian package. They are not universal Linux commands: use them only on a Debian-compatible distribution and an AMD64 system. Grafana publishes Tempo release binaries for AMD64 (amd64) and 64-bit ARM (arm64); it does not publish a 32-bit ARM (arm) binary, for which a source build is required.

  1. Choose a Tempo release version and the package matching your Linux distribution and CPU architecture. For Debian-compatible Linux on AMD64, the release URL follows this pattern: https://github.com/grafana/tempo/releases/download/v<TEMPO_VERSION_NUMBER>/tempo_<TEMPO_VERSION_NUMBER>_linux_amd64.deb. Replace <TEMPO_VERSION_NUMBER> with the version you selected.

  2. Download the selected package, substituting its complete release URL:

Prepare local storage directories

The Linux guide’s local-filesystem example stores Tempo’s write-ahead log (WAL) in /data/tempo/wal, trace blocks in /data/tempo/blocks, and live-store and internal-cache data under /var/tempo. Create the parent directories and give the package-created tempo user ownership:

sudo mkdir -p /data/tempo /var/tempo
sudo chown -R tempo /data/tempo /var/tempo

These ownership commands assume the Debian package created a tempo user. For a different installation method, first confirm which account runs the service and adjust ownership accordingly. Grafana presents local filesystem storage as an option for single-node development and evaluation. For production, its guide recommends object storage, with AWS S3, Azure Blob Storage, and Google Cloud Storage as examples. For local testing of an S3-compatible backend, it also names MinIO, SeaweedFS, and rclone.

Start the service and check its status

The following systemd commands apply to the monolithic package installation. Restart Tempo if it is already running, or start it if it is stopped:

sudo systemctl restart tempo.service

Check the service state:

systemctl is-active tempo

The expected output is active. That confirms the service process is running; it does not, by itself, prove that traces can be ingested and retrieved. If the service is not active, inspect its logs and review the configuration:

journalctl -u tempo

Also check that /data/tempo/ contains the wal and blocks directories.

Send a test trace and verify data flow

Use telemetrygen to send traces to the local Tempo instance, then query for them using the validation procedure in Grafana’s guide to validating a local Tempo deployment. Grafana’s Linux guide says trace blocks may take 15–30 seconds to appear after sending traces while the live store flushes. This is an observation in that guide, not a service-level guarantee. A successful send-and-query check confirms data flow more meaningfully than service status alone.

Know what this installation does—and does not—provide

This procedure creates a single-node monolithic deployment: all Tempo components run in one process. Grafana describes monolithic mode as common for local installation, testing, and small-scale deployment; it does not require Kafka. The Linux guide explicitly characterizes its procedure as a test installation suitable for local development and evaluation.

Tempo 3.0 microservices mode separates components and requires a Kafka-compatible message queue; Grafana gives Apache Kafka, Redpanda, and WarpStream as examples. Other documented deployment options include Docker and Kubernetes tooling such as Helm and Tanka. Choose a deployment shape based on your environment and tracing requirements rather than treating the single-node package procedure as a universal topology.

Plan access protection before exposure

Grafana states that “Grafana Tempo does not come with any included authentication layer.” Its deployment guidance recommends placing an authenticating reverse proxy in front of Tempo services to prevent unauthorized access. Review security, storage, retention, and availability against your organization’s requirements before adapting this evaluation setup for production. See Grafana’s Tempo deployment documentation.
