Buy a graded sports card if you want a third-party authentication and condition assessment in a sealed holder—and the price makes sense for your purpose. Buy a raw, or ungraded, card if you want to handle it, can assess the listing evidence, or would rather not pay for a slab and grade. Either way, compare recent sold prices for the exact card; a grade is not a guaranteed return.
Graded vs. raw: which fits your priorities?
| Your priority | Lean toward | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A third-party condition label and encapsulation | Graded | Grader, grade, certification details, case integrity, and sold prices for the same card at the same grade. PSA describes its holder as tamper-evident and protective against pressure and most damage: PSA grading services. |
| A lower all-in purchase price or the ability to handle the card | Raw | Photos, seller evidence, condition details, and any applicable authenticity safeguards. A seller’s description is not a promise of a particular numeric grade. |
| You own the card and are deciding whether to submit it | Compare before submitting | Estimate its likely grade conservatively; compare raw and relevant graded sold prices, then account for grading, shipping, insurance, and time. |
What grading does—and does not—tell you
Authentication and condition are separate
Authentication asks whether a card is genuine; grading assesses its condition. PSA says it authenticates a card before grading it: PSA grading services. A graded card therefore comes with a third-party assessment, but you should still check the certification information and holder.
A grade is an assessment, not a price guarantee
PSA’s standards include objective checks and a judgment element: the company says “the other component of grading is somewhat subjective,” and notes that eye appeal can prompt a grader to make a judgment call: PSA grading standards. A numeric grade describes an assessment of condition; it does not establish that an asking price is fair, that every graded card sells for more than a raw copy, or that a particular raw card will earn a particular grade.
How to inspect a graded card
- Review clear images of both sides of the card, the label, and the full slab. Look for damage to the case or signs that it may have been tampered with.
- Check the certification details with the grading company where its verification tools are available. PSA provides certification verification through its site: PSA Cert Verification.
- Compare recent sold listings for the same card and grade—not merely the same player or a similar-looking card.
A slab is a tamper-evident, sonically sealed hard-plastic case intended to protect the card from pressure and most damage, according to PSA: PSA grading services. Encapsulation is useful protection, but it does not eliminate the need to inspect the listing or judge its price.

How to inspect a raw card
Ask for sharp front and back photos under useful lighting. Check the corners, edges, surface, centering, folds, stains, and other visible damage. If photos do not show the areas that matter, ask the seller for better images before buying.
Condition descriptions and photographs can help you decide whether a card suits your needs, but they cannot guarantee a future grade. PSA’s grading standards include both objective checks and subjective consideration of eye appeal: PSA grading standards.

Compare value using exact-card sold listings
Match the identifying details before comparing prices: year, manufacturer, set, player, card number, and parallel. For a graded card, also match the grading company and grade where possible. Asking prices show what sellers hope to receive; completed sales give a more useful view of what buyers have paid.
PSA recommends reviewing sales from the preceding three to six months for the card in its estimated grade when determining declared value: PSA grading services. That is a useful comparison method, not a promise of future resale value. No universal premium for graded cards is established; value depends on the particular card, condition, and market.

What grading costs and how long it can take
As displayed by PSA on October 4, 2026, its Standard service listed a fee of $59.99 per card, a maximum insured value of $1,000, and an estimated turnaround of 90–100 business days. These are PSA-specific figures, not industry-wide rates. PSA says estimates are not guaranteed, begin when an order enters its system, and can change with volume and capacity; other service tiers have different fees, insured-value limits, and estimated times. Check the current PSA service levels before deciding.
If you are considering grading a card you already own, compare plausible outcomes rather than assuming the best grade. Add the applicable grading fee, shipping, insurance, and the time the card will be away. PSA recommends looking at sold listings in the estimated grade when considering declared value, but that estimate does not predict the grade the card will receive.

When marketplace authentication may help
Some eBay listings have authentication safeguards, but they apply only when the buyer and listing meet the program’s requirements. eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee page says eligible single cards priced at $200 or more may qualify, subject to geography and listing conditions. Its described process authenticates eligible raw cards and inspects the case and label of graded cards; it does not regrade them. Check the current eBay Authenticity Guarantee details and the badge and terms on the specific listing.

Should you buy a graded or raw sports card?
Choose the format that matches what you value. A graded card offers a third-party condition label and a protective holder; a raw card may suit you better if you want to handle it and can evaluate the available evidence. For either, verify the details and compare sold prices for the precise card. If buying raw, do not treat a seller’s condition estimate as a guaranteed grade; if buying graded, do not treat the slab as proof that the price is right.
