GPT-6 is already rolling out in ChatGPT. OpenAI began the global rollout on October 7, 2026, and says access for Free and Go users expands on October 8. The update adds Intelligent UI and progressive answering, and OpenAI reports improvements over GPT-5.6 on selected internal evaluations. Those results are not an independent review or proof that GPT-6 is better for every task.
Is GPT-6 out yet?
Yes. OpenAI announced GPT-6 with Intelligent UI for ChatGPT on October 7, 2026, and said the rollout was starting that day. Its release notes say the rollout would expand to Free and Go on October 8. What’s new in GPT-6 for ChatGPT?
Intelligent UI combines answers with interactive elements
Intelligent UI lets ChatGPT combine text with graphics and interactive components such as buttons, forms, charts, and other experiences. It may present a request as an interactive tool when that suits the task, rather than returning only prose. OpenAI’s examples include calculators, bill splitters, and games used directly in a conversation. Straightforward questions can still receive plain-text answers.

Answers can arrive progressively
GPT-6 can begin answering while it continues to think or use tools, then add findings as it works without waiting for another prompt. OpenAI describes this as a way to start responding sooner; it does not mean the first portion is necessarily complete. As OpenAI puts it, “With GPT‑6, we’re also making it possible for ChatGPT to begin answering while it continues to think.”

Is GPT-6 better than GPT-5?
OpenAI reports selected improvements over GPT-5.6, but the comparisons are specific to particular tasks and evaluations. They are OpenAI’s own results, not an independent head-to-head review, and they do not establish that GPT-6 outperforms every GPT-5 version in every use case.

To judge any model comparison, check the exact versions, task, metric, evaluation source, and deployment context. A result for ChatGPT web search does not automatically describe performance in Work, Codex, or API use.
Who can use GPT-6 in ChatGPT?
OpenAI’s October 7 release notes describe this plan rollout and model assignment:

Enterprise access depends on workspace-admin settings. There is also a Pro reasoning-option exception: it continues to use GPT-6 Astra and does not support Intelligent UI. These are the rollout details in the ChatGPT release notes; availability can change as the rollout progresses.
Does the ChatGPT update also change Work and Codex?
No. OpenAI said the October 7 ChatGPT update did not change the models powering Work and Codex. Its October system card distinguishes the ChatGPT models in this update from earlier GPT-6 versions still used in Work and Codex. Treat model availability as product-specific rather than assuming that a ChatGPT announcement applies across OpenAI’s products. See the announcement and October GPT-6 system card.

OpenAI says GPT-6 builds on safety advances from Astra and strengthens protections against high-risk cyber, biological, and violence-related misuse. It also reports stronger resistance to adaptive, multi-turn jailbreak attempts compared with GPT-5.6 counterparts.

The same October system card reports regressions in some evaluations, including selected self-harm and content categories. OpenAI says these evaluations use deliberately challenging prompts and that their error rates are not representative of average production traffic. The results therefore describe performance in those evaluation conditions, not the frequency of errors users should expect in ordinary use.
