Codex running GPT-6 Astra reportedly completed the quests in World of Warcraft’s Orc starting zone in 40 minutes without dying. It did not watch the game screen: the agent used server network messages, quest information extracted from AzerothCore SQL files, and custom pathfinding code. The run took place on a local private server, not Blizzard’s live WoW service, and the result is the developer’s account of one run—not an independently verified benchmark.

What the agent completed—and who reported it

On 2 October 2026, the agent-wow developer said they asked Codex using GPT-6 Astra at xhigh reasoning effort to “create an orc character and complete all quests in the starting zone.” The developer reported that the task took 40 minutes and ended with zero deaths. Tom’s Hardware described the video as showing a level 1 Orc completing every quest in the Valley of Trials and finishing in Sen’jin Village. The time, death count, and completion are reported by the developer; the available coverage does not establish a controlled comparison or independent benchmark. Tom’s Hardware’s report and the developer’s account describe the run.

What “blind” means in this run

The agent did not receive rendered frames or use computer vision to interpret the screen. Instead, agent-wow lets an agent interact directly with a game server through WoW’s network protocol. In this experiment, server messages supplied structured game-state information; the agent could also consult quest data extracted from server SQL files. So “blind” means screen-blind, not deprived of information about the game world. The agent-wow developer describes the project as a platform for protocol-level interaction, rather than a ready-made system that supplies movement, combat, or interaction mechanics. The project’s repository describes its architecture.

How the agent gathered information and acted

Server messages became a working view of the game

The agent created a module to subscribe to server messages and keep them in memory. A Python script polled the module, decoded updates into a representation of the world—including health, nearby creatures, quest progress, and loot—and sent client messages back to the server. Tom’s Hardware counted 28 message types in the module; that is the reporter’s count, not a performance measure.

SQL files supplied quest details

The agent extracted quest requirements, quest givers, turn-in characters, and spawn coordinates from AzerothCore SQL files. The developer said it handled prerequisite quest chains in order, sold junk, equipped upgrades, trained abilities before entering the final cave, and accepted both cave quests together. The developer characterized the quest research as “arguably similar to how a human might spend hours on Wowhead to research quests.” The important difference is that this agent could read local server data directly.

Custom code handled routes and movement

A generated C++ helper loaded local AzerothCore navigation-mesh files, known as “mmaps,” and used Detour to calculate routes between coordinates. It returned waypoints as JSON for a Python script to follow using movement packets. The developer also reported that the agent passed through map locations with possible missing collision properties, describing the behavior as exploiting map bugs. That caveat matters: the route was not simply a test of ordinary player navigation through an unmodified, live environment.

Where the experiment ran—and what it does not show

agent-wow is described as an AzerothCore client for autonomous AI players. The developer says the experiments run on local private servers powered by AzerothCore, which supports WoW 3.3.5a; agent-wow is not intended to connect to live World of Warcraft servers. AzerothCore describes itself as an open-source modular MMO solution released under GNU GPLv2, but that project context does not make this run a test of Blizzard’s live service. AzerothCore’s official site provides its project description.

  • This was one short starting-zone task, not a demonstration of completing all of WoW or leveling to 80.
  • The agent had protocol messages, quest data from server files, and the ability to write helper code; it was not an unaided player relying only on what a human could see in-game.
  • The account does not report repeated trials, multiplayer coordination, or a test against live servers.
  • The developer said the run was not sandboxed and described sandboxing as future work. They also identified access to server administration and database internals as a boundary concern, not as something the agent did during this run.

What the developer says comes next

The developer’s account identifies longer autonomous leveling and coordination among multiple agents as open future questions. The longer-term ambition is to test whether a server full of agents could clear Icecrown Citadel on heroic difficulty; that is a goal, not an outcome demonstrated by the Orc starting-zone run. For the recording, the developer used AzerothCore GM commands to bind a viewing character to the agent’s character. They said this approach works for one character in a short session but will not scale to longer multi-agent runs, and that better observability tooling is planned.
