To get better results from GPT-6 Astra, state the outcome you need, supply only the context that matters, set constraints and decision boundaries, and specify what a finished answer or implementation must include. For recurring work, use narrowly triggered skills with a concise routing file; keep repository rules in AGENTS.md relevant to the task rather than loading every project document by default.
How to structure a prompt for GPT-6 Astra
OpenAI’s prompt-engineering guidance says GPT models such as gpt-6-astra benefit from precise instructions that provide the logic and data needed for the task. A useful prompt makes the requested outcome and the conditions for success clear before adding background detail.
- Goal: Say what must be true when the work is complete. Prefer a concrete deliverable or result over a broad request such as “help with this.”
- Context: Provide the relevant files, data, audience, environment, and constraints. Leave out background that will not change the answer or the work.
- Role and tools: Explain what Astra is responsible for and which tools or sources it may use. If a tool is unavailable or prohibited, say so explicitly.
- Constraints and decisions: State requirements such as compatibility, tone, length, privacy, or scope. Identify which choices Astra may make independently and which require your approval.
- Examples and output contract: When format or style matters, include an example or schema. Specify required sections, validation, and any evidence or links the result must include.
- Completion criteria: Describe how to check that the result is finished, not merely plausible. For example, require a review against the original requirements and a note about unresolved issues.

How to keep Astra on track during long tasks
OpenAI’s latest-model guidance says GPT-6 Astra can follow longer instructions, but may also be more sensitive to information in context. It also describes Astra as generally more coherent than GPT-5.6 Sol and earlier models during long tasks. That makes clear progress instructions useful, but does not mean that every available project document should be included at the start.
- Ask Astra to break a large task into steps and keep track of completed and remaining work.
- Tell it to inspect important outputs against the goal rather than stopping at the first plausible implementation.
- Give it permission to change strategy when an approach fails, while requiring it to explain material trade-offs or remaining blockers.
- Set a decision boundary: routine, reversible choices can usually be made independently; consequential, irreversible, expensive, sensitive, or subjective decisions should be brought back to you.
- Ask questions only when missing information cannot reasonably be inferred or when a decision crosses that boundary.
How to package skills so Astra uses them efficiently
A skill should make it easy to tell when it applies and where its detailed instructions live. OpenAI’s Codex guidance, published by Eric Provencher on September 11, 2026, recommends keeping skill descriptions as short as possible while making the trigger clear.
Make the trigger specific
A broad description such as “helps with databases” does not distinguish among routine queries, schema changes, data migrations, and operational troubleshooting. A migration-specific description makes the relevant situation easier to recognize. Keep the skill focused on the work it is meant to route rather than claiming it applies to an entire technical domain.
Use progressive disclosure
Keep the root skill document concise: explain when to use the skill, give its essential routing guidance, and point to supporting documents or scripts for the detailed workflow. This lets Astra load deeper procedure when it is relevant instead of putting every possible instruction into context for every invocation.
- Put the trigger and first actions in the root Markdown file.
- Move lengthy procedures and specialized reference material into supporting files.
- Use scripts for repeatable operations where appropriate, and explain when they should be used.
- Remove stale directions and resolve conflicts between skills so Astra is not asked to follow incompatible rules.
When to use AGENTS.md instead of a skill
Use AGENTS.md for repository guidance that should apply to relevant work in that project; use a skill to route a reusable, more specialized workflow. The two can complement each other, but neither benefits from indiscriminate detail.
Recommended Free Tools
Point Astra to architecture, database, or deployment documentation when the task depends on it. Requiring all of those documents before every edit adds context even when most of it has no bearing on the change. Keep project rules current, and make clear which references are conditional on the task.

How to tell whether a prompt or skill needs improvement
When Astra’s result misses the mark, diagnose the missing instruction rather than responding with a longer prompt by default. Review these areas:
- Outcome clarity: Could Astra tell what success looks like?
- Context fit: Did the prompt include the inputs and constraints that materially affect the answer, without burying them in unrelated material?
- Decision boundaries: Was it clear which choices Astra could make and when it should ask?
- Output shape: If structure mattered, did you provide an example or explicit format?
- Persistence: Did the instructions require inspection, recovery, and a definition of done?
- Context and tool cost: Are extra documents or tool calls improving the result enough to justify their added context and latency?
If the same specialist workflow is repeatedly needed, make it a skill with a clear trigger. If a task-specific instruction is repeated only because project conventions are unclear, improve the relevant repository guidance instead.
What API users should check when moving to GPT-6 Astra
Prompting guidance does not replace an API migration check. OpenAI’s latest-model guidance identifies reasoning effort, Responses tool calling, unsupported parameters, and data-residency requirements as areas API users should verify for their integration. Check the current model and API documentation for the exact supported settings before changing production requests; do not assume that an older model’s parameters or tool-call behavior carry over unchanged.
