GPT-5 is not just around the corner: OpenAI launched it on August 7, 2025. As of October 8, 2026, OpenAI’s GPT-5 overview points readers to GPT-6 as its latest model, while its API documentation describes GPT-5 as a previous, deprecated model. GPT-5’s launch still matters because it introduced a routed ChatGPT experience combining fast responses with deeper reasoning, alongside a set of API models and developer controls. But launch claims and access details should not be mistaken for a description of what every account can use today.
What GPT-5 was—and what the launch changed
OpenAI introduced GPT-5 on August 7, 2025, calling it “our best AI system yet.” That was the company’s description at launch, not a current ranking. The central change in ChatGPT was a move toward a unified system rather than asking users to choose between a fast model and a reasoning model for every conversation.

OpenAI’s launch description said a fast model would handle most questions, a deeper reasoning model would take on harder problems, and a real-time router would choose between them using the conversation’s type and complexity, tool requirements, and explicit user intent. The system card also said mini versions handled remaining queries after usage limits were reached. This describes the launch-era design; it does not establish the exact model routing or limits used by every current ChatGPT plan. OpenAI also promoted improvements across coding, writing, health-related responses, voice, and study features, as well as connections to Gmail and Google Calendar. These are vendor-described capabilities and product features, not guarantees that a response will be correct or that every feature remains available in the same form today. For health or other consequential decisions, use a model’s answer as information to check—not as a substitute for a qualified professional.

OpenAI published several launch-era evaluation results. Each figure below is attributable to OpenAI and applies to the named task or test context; none is a universal promise about results in ordinary use.

The figures come from OpenAI’s launch announcement. They should be read as vendor-reported results: the sources reviewed do not establish independent third-party validation of these specific comparisons. Benchmarks can help describe performance on defined tasks, but they do not settle whether a model is the best fit for a particular person’s workflow.

What GPT-5 offered developers at launch
OpenAI announced three API model sizes: gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, and gpt-5-nano. The company described API GPT-5 as the reasoning model powering maximum performance in ChatGPT; it also said the non-reasoning ChatGPT version was available through gpt-5-chat-latest. Those details describe the launch announcement, not a guarantee of current availability or support. OpenAI’s current API documentation labels GPT-5 a previous, deprecated model. These are the API prices in OpenAI’s August 2025 launch announcement, not confirmed current rates. The documentation still identifies GPT-5 as deprecated, so developers should verify live pricing, model availability, and migration guidance before choosing it for a new integration. OpenAI’s developer announcement also described controls and features including a reasoning_effort setting (with minimal among its options), a verbosity parameter, custom tools, parallel tool calling, built-in tools, streaming, Structured Outputs, prompt caching, and the Batch API.
What launch-era ChatGPT access looked like
OpenAI said GPT-5 began rolling out to Free, Plus, Pro, and Team users on August 7, 2025, with Enterprise and Edu access to follow the next week. At that time, OpenAI described usage volume as the main difference between free and paid access: Plus users had significantly higher usage than free users; Pro users had unlimited access and GPT-5 Pro; and Team, Enterprise, and Edu users had generous limits. These are dated launch statements, not a current plan comparison.

The official material reviewed does not establish the October 2026 plan matrix, account-specific usage limits, regional availability, or current access to GPT-5. Check OpenAI’s current product and account information before relying on a particular plan or model being available. Its GPT-5 overview now points to GPT-6 as the latest model, while the API model page marks GPT-5 as previous and deprecated.
How to decide whether GPT-5 matters to you now
For most people choosing an AI assistant today, the practical question is not whether GPT-5 will transform their use of AI; it is whether it is available and suitable for their task compared with current options. Consider:

OpenAI’s launch-era design helps explain why GPT-5 was significant: it made model routing and reasoning depth part of the ChatGPT experience, while giving developers controls for configuring API behavior. But the launch benchmarks, plan statements, and prices are historical context. They cannot establish today’s relative performance, account access, or best choice.
