A GPS time clock app stamps each clock-in and clock-out with the phone’s location. That is the core function, and it is what most vendors actually sell. Whether the app also follows workers during a shift, checks location while they are off the clock, or stops a punch at a job-site boundary depends on the specific product and plan. “GPS tracking” is a label that covers several different behaviors, so the practical question for a buyer is not whether an app has GPS but what it does at each moment of the workday.

This guide explains those behaviors, compares five products that market GPS time clocks to employers (QuickBooks Time, Chronotek Pro, Workforce.com, Geo Time Tracker, and allGeo through the ADP Marketplace), and gives a checklist for evaluating any app before rollout. Vendor pages were checked on 7 October 2026. Prices and plan names change often, so confirm them with the vendor before you commit.

Three different things “GPS tracking” can mean

Most confusion about GPS time clocks comes from treating these three behaviors as one feature.

  • Punch-location verification. The app records where the phone was when a worker clocked in or out. Nothing is recorded between those two events. This is the most common model among the products reviewed.
  • Location updates during the shift. The app records or refreshes location at intervals while the worker is clocked in. QuickBooks says its Workforce app logs location at clock-in and updates it during the day.
  • Geofence checks. The app compares the phone’s position against a defined job-site boundary. The result may be a reminder to the worker, a flag for the manager, or a block on the punch. Some geofence checks run while the worker is off the clock, which is the part that most often surprises employees.

Ask every vendor which of these applies, how often location is read, and whether any reading happens when the worker is not clocked in.

How the five products compare

The table below uses the vendor’s own wording where the product page described a behavior. “Not stated” means the vendor page checked on 7 October 2026 did not describe that behavior. It does not mean the product lacks the feature.

Product Location at punch During a shift Off the clock Geofence response
QuickBooks Time (Intuit) Yes, logged at clock-in Location updated during the day (Workforce app) Terms say the app may request GPS points to test geofence entry; those points stay on the device and admins cannot access off-clock location Reminders when workers enter or leave a job site (Elite plan, setup required)
Chronotek Pro Yes, every clock-in and clock-out (GPS Smart Track) Not stated Not stated Geofences flag off-site punches; alerts for location mismatches; clock-in can be blocked until GPS is active and confirmed

Product-by-product notes

QuickBooks Time

QuickBooks Time offers the most detailed description of location behavior among the products reviewed, and its wording is worth reading closely. The product page says the Workforce app logs location when a worker clocks in and updates it during the day. Geofencing is available only on QuickBooks Time Elite and requires setup. Geofence alerts tell a worker when they enter or leave a job site, rather than blocking the punch.

The product page lists integrations with QuickBooks Payroll, QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop, and third-party tools, and notes that some connections may carry conditions or fees. Mobile GPS accuracy depends on cell service and on the phone’s location settings.

Chronotek Pro

Chronotek describes the most assertive set of controls. Every punch receives a GPS reading, geofences can flag off-site punches, and the system can block clock-in until GPS is active and confirmed. It also lists alerts for location mismatches, live dashboards, time-card history, payroll-ready exports, and telephone or landline clock-in for sites without smartphones. These are the vendor’s own descriptions of what the product does. They have not been independently tested, and the page does not say how often location is read during a shift.

Workforce.com

Workforce.com says it captures GPS data at the moment of clock-in and clock-out and supports site perimeters through geofencing. Its page also covers timesheets, scheduling, payroll connections, and time-record workflows. Pricing is quote-based on the page reviewed, so you will need to request a figure.

  • In-Depth Reporting Capabilities: Gain valuable insights into attendance trends, productivity, and labor costs with our comprehensive reporting tools.

Geo Time Tracker

Geo Time Tracker is the most restrained model in this group. It verifies location only at clock-in and clock-out and states that it does not provide live tracking, movement history, or background location collection. It offers an Android app and mobile web access, GPS geofencing, and CSV exports, with higher plans adding formats for Sage, BrightPay, and QuickBooks. The vendor is UK-focused, so confirm that the product and its payroll formats fit your country before buying.

allGeo via ADP Marketplace

The ADP Marketplace listing for allGeo describes GPS attendance records sent with pay-period attendance logs, geofenced job sites, mobile location tracking, alerts, and a visualization dashboard. Because the listing does not state how often mobile location is read, ask the vendor directly whether any reading happens between punches. The listing separates a manual time-clock tier from a geofencing tier, so confirm which features your plan includes.

Off-clock checks: the distinction that matters

QuickBooks’ terms draw a line that is easy to misread. The app shares location while a worker is on the clock and does not save GPS points off the clock. The same terms say the app may request GPS points while the worker is off the clock so it can determine whether they have entered a geofence, and that those points remain on the device. The vendor also states that administrators cannot access employee location data when workers are off the clock.

In practical terms, an off-clock geofence check is not the same as continuous tracking, and the vendor says the points are not stored on its side. It still means the app is running while the worker is not clocked in. Employers should decide whether that is acceptable, explain it to staff, and confirm in writing how the vendor handles it. Read the exact terms that apply to your plan, because the wording is a contract matter rather than a feature summary.

Geofences: reminder, flag, or block

A geofence can influence a punch in three different ways, and each has different consequences for workers and payroll.

  • Durable, Versatile Design for Any Workplace: Built with industrial-grade materials for daily durability. Its compact design installs anywhere—warehouses, retail counters, offices, schools, and healthcare facilities—for consistent performance.
  • Reminder. The worker is told they have entered or left a site. The punch is not affected. QuickBooks Time Elite works this way.
  • Flag. The punch is recorded, but the manager receives an alert about an off-site punch. Chronotek describes this behavior. Someone must review the exception, so you need a clear review process.
  • Block. The punch is refused until location is confirmed. Chronotek says clock-in can be blocked until GPS is active and confirmed. A worker with a weak signal or disabled location services may be unable to clock in, so you need a fallback such as a manager correction or a non-GPS clock method.

Test how a geofence behaves at the edge of a site, not only in its center. Buildings, vehicles, and poor cell coverage can all affect the reading.

Corrections, approvals, and audit history

GPS data is only useful if the record it supports can be reviewed and corrected. The pages reviewed describe timesheets, time-card history, exception alerts, and payroll exports, but they do not describe correction workflows in enough detail to compare. Before buying, ask each vendor:

  • Can a worker request a correction to a punch, and who approves it?
  • Does the system keep an audit trail showing the original GPS reading and any later edit?
  • Can a manager see the reason for a flagged or blocked punch without needing to export data?

Payroll and export formats

For many employers, the export format matters as much as the GPS feature. The products reviewed handle this differently:

  • QuickBooks Time integrates with QuickBooks Payroll, QuickBooks Online, and QuickBooks Desktop, plus third-party tools, with possible fees.
  • Chronotek Pro advertises payroll-ready exports. The page does not name specific payroll systems.
  • Workforce.com lists payroll connections. The page does not name specific payroll systems.
  • Geo Time Tracker exports CSV on its base plan, and higher plans add formats for Sage, BrightPay, and QuickBooks.
  • allGeo sends GPS attendance records with pay-period attendance logs.

Devices, GPS settings, and connectivity

A compatible smartphone enables mobile clock-ins. Many workers already carry one, and some employers already have a device policy that covers it, so check before buying hardware. QuickBooks documents Android and iOS support. Geo Time Tracker documents an Android app and mobile web access that uses GPS. If a worker does not have a suitable phone, an Android smartphone for employee time clock app can be used as a shared device, but it is optional and compatibility should be confirmed with the vendor first.

Before rollout, check the following:

  • Location services are enabled for the app and set to allow access when the app is in use, and any background setting is documented.
  • Workers have reliable cell service at the job sites, because QuickBooks says mobile GPS accuracy depends on it.
  • There is a fallback for workers without a suitable phone. Chronotek mentions landline clock-in for this case.
  • Your device and browser requirements match the vendor’s stated support, including the mobile web option in Geo Time Tracker.

Vendor statistics and what they do not prove

Intuit reports that customers using QuickBooks Time saw average gross payroll cost savings of 4.26%, citing a survey of 595 U.S. customers conducted in January 2023, with businesses reporting gross payroll savings averaging 4.26%. This is a vendor-run survey of a specific U.S. customer group in early 2023. It is not an independent study, and it does not show what your business would save. Chronotek displays operating volume figures on its feature page, but the page does not give a date or independent basis for them, so they are not used here.

Privacy and legal obligations

Vendor feature pages describe how a product behaves. They do not decide whether your use of that product is lawful. Rules on employee location data differ by country, state, and sector, and they can cover notice, consent, data retention, purpose limitation, and tracking outside working hours. Turning on a GPS time clock does not make an employer compliant. Before rollout, review the rules that apply to you with primary guidance from your data protection regulator or employment authority, and write down what the system records, who can see it, how long it is kept, and what workers are told.

A buying checklist

  1. Ask whether location is read only at punch time, during the shift, or while the worker is off the clock, and get the answer in writing.
  2. Confirm which plan includes geofencing and whether a geofence result is a reminder, a flag, or a block.
  3. Ask for the correction and audit workflow, including who approves edits and how the original GPS reading is preserved.
  4. Confirm your payroll or accounting system is supported, and check the export format against what your payroll team uses.
  5. Test the app on the phones your workers actually use, at your real job sites, including sites with weak signal.
  6. Get a full written price for your number of users and locations, including setup fees.
  7. Review the legal and notice requirements for your location before any worker is enrolled.

The Bottom Line

A GPS time clock is most useful when it verifies where punches happen and gives managers a clear way to review exceptions. Be cautious with any product that reads location during the shift or while workers are off the clock. Compare the specific behavior of each plan, the geofence response, the correction workflow, and the payroll export. Then decide on the legal basis and staff notice before you enable it.
