Google’s 2023 Pixel Fold made a strikingly practical choice: its 5.8-inch outer screen was wider in proportion than the tall, narrow cover displays common on many foldables, while its 7.6-inch inner screen opened into an almost-square workspace. That pairing made the phone usable as a phone when closed and more like a small tablet when open. It is fair to call that the right idea ahead of its time—but that is an interpretation of the design, not proof that it was objectively better or that the industry later followed its lead.
What made the original Pixel Fold’s shape different?
Announced in May 2023 as Google’s first foldable phone, the Pixel Fold paired two displays with noticeably different proportions. Google’s specifications list a 5.8-inch outer OLED at 2092 × 1080, a 17.4:9 aspect ratio and 408 ppi; the inner OLED measures 7.6 inches at 2208 × 1840, a 6:5 ratio and 380 ppi. Both were specified for refresh rates up to 120 Hz. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Google’s Pixel phone hardware specifications identify the relevant model as Pixel Fold (2023).
The outer display’s relatively broad shape was intended to feel more like a conventional phone screen than a narrow strip. Open the hinge and the near-square inner panel offered more room for two-pane layouts, reading, video, and other large-screen tasks. The distinction mattered: the Fold was not simply a regular phone with a bigger screen hidden inside; it asked users to move between a phone-like closed format and a compact, almost-square open one.

A cover display is the screen people use whenever they do not unfold the device. Its proportions affect routine actions such as reading, typing, and navigating apps. Google’s choice leaned toward making that closed state feel familiar, instead of treating it mainly as a narrow preview panel for the larger screen.

The inner display then supplied a different kind of space. At 6:5, it was much closer to square than a typical phone screen, a shape that can make side-by-side content feel natural. That design intent does not mean every app automatically benefited: the usable layout depended on how software responded to the larger panel.
How did the hinge support the design?
Google described a custom 180-degree fluid-friction hinge that opened flat. Its engineering account says the hinge components sat toward the ends of the phone rather than beneath the display, helping the company balance a thin unfolded profile with a large screen. Google product manager George Hwang described the challenge as finding “the right balance of making something super thin while also maximizing the display.” Google’s hinge-design article also recounts paper-folding and passport or book inspirations.

This is Google’s explanation of its design, not an independent durability comparison. The placement and opening behavior help explain the Fold’s form, but they do not establish that its hinge was more reliable than those on competing phones.
What could the Fold do beyond opening into a larger screen?
Google presented the fold as a way to use the device in multiple positions, not just two screen sizes. With the phone partly open, tabletop positioning could support hands-free viewing or taking photos and videos. At announcement, Google said YouTube controls would be planned for the lower half in an upcoming update; that should not be mistaken for a description of every feature in the May 2023 software build.

The outer screen could serve as a viewfinder while the rear 48-megapixel main camera took a selfie. In tent mode, Google showed the cameras aimed for astrophotography while the front display provided controls. The company also previewed a dual-screen interpreter mode for Android 14. These examples made the Fold’s hinge and two displays part of the interaction model, rather than merely a way to enlarge content. Google’s launch announcement also cited 5× optical zoom, Real Tone, Night Sight, Portrait photography, and 10-bit HDR video as camera capabilities; those are manufacturer-stated features, not independently tested results.
Why did Google change the Pixel Fold’s shape?
Google’s first Fold shows that it chose a wide-cover, near-square-inner design in 2023. The supplied evidence does not establish a definitive reason for a later shape change, so it would be misleading to attribute one to a specific user preference or engineering problem without a direct company explanation.

More broadly, a foldable’s proportions involve trade-offs: a cover screen can prioritize familiar phone use, while an inner screen can prioritize certain large-screen layouts; folded bulk, unfolded thinness, camera flexibility, hinge behavior, and software adaptation also matter. Comparing later book-style foldables on those axes can clarify how their designs differ, but there is no controlled multi-generation evidence here that proves Google’s original proportions were universally superior or that the market adopted them because they were right.
Where did the large-screen software fall short?
The near-square inner screen could not guarantee a tablet-like app experience. An Android Developers Blog result dated June 15, 2023 noted that apps on Pixel Fold could be letterboxed on the inner screen, even when they supported landscape, and advocated two-pane layouts for large displays. The page is available at Android Developers’ Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet guidance. That evidence supports a specific caveat, not a claim that most or all apps were poorly adapted.

What should owners know about updates and repairs?
Google lists at least five years of security updates from the date the Pixel Fold first became available on the US Google Store. That is a minimum support duration, not a calendar end date; Google’s current Pixel hardware and update information is the place to check the applicable schedule.
Repairability is mixed. In an assessment completed in January 2024, iFixit praised a free service manual, parts availability to end users at that time, calibration tools, and the ability to replace several cameras and the glass back independently once the phone was open. It also reported challenging dual-cell battery replacement, a USB-C charge port soldered to the logic board, and difficult access requiring careful removal and reapplication of adhesive around the outer display and/or back cover. Was the original Pixel Fold ahead of its time?
As a design argument, yes: the original Fold made a clear case for combining a comfortable, phone-like outer display with a near-square inner one, then using its hinge for tabletop, tent, camera, and dual-screen experiences. Google hardware design lead Ivy Ross framed the broader goal as multifunctionality: “Technology shouldn’t be single-use — we wanted these devices to be multifunctional.” Google’s design account helps explain that ambition.

Software adaptation was not complete in every documented case, repair work can be demanding, and support is finite. Nor do the available facts demonstrate that the proportions were universally best or that the wider cover display became an industry standard. “The right idea years ahead of its time” is strongest as a description of the Fold’s unusually legible design priorities—not as a verdict backed by sales, market-share, or controlled comparison data.
