Google says it is backing upgrades at existing U.S. nuclear plants because long-term power agreements can give plant owners revenue certainty to invest in added capacity. Its October 6, 2026, agreement with Constellation Energy targets 890 megawatts of additional capacity for the PJM grid before the end of 2032. That is a forecast, not power already delivered.

What Google announced

Google announced an energy collaboration with Constellation Energy covering financing for physical and digital upgrades at six operating plants in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Google will be an anchor customer under a long-term agreement, which it says provides revenue certainty for upgrades to 11 Constellation reactors. The arrangement also includes deploying Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise to help Constellation optimize plant operations. Google’s announcement describes the expected added capacity as serving the PJM grid, which it says spans 13 states and serves 67 million people.

Google estimates the work will sustain roughly 4,400 existing jobs and support approximately 7,200 construction jobs. Those employment figures, like the capacity forecast, are company estimates rather than independently verified outcomes.

Why support upgrades at plants that already operate?

The core rationale is that an existing plant may be able to produce more electricity after equipment modernization, without requiring construction of an entirely new reactor. Google argues that a long-term customer commitment makes future revenue more predictable, helping justify investment in those upgrades. It also describes the resulting electricity as firm, 24/7 clean power and says using existing infrastructure can be quicker than building a new plant.

These are Google’s arguments, not an independent comparison of costs, construction schedules, or environmental impacts. The announcement does not publish the agreement’s financial terms or a project-by-project analysis showing how much each upgrade costs or how quickly it can be completed.

What is a nuclear uprate?

In Google’s description, an uprate modernizes equipment such as turbines, steam generators, and digital control systems to increase the output of an existing reactor. The aim is to get more generating capacity from a plant that is already operating, rather than build a new reactor. Google’s Amanda Peterson Corio, Global Head of Data Center Energy, summarized it this way: “A nuclear uprate modernizes turbines, steam generators, and digital control systems to boost the power output of an existing reactor.” This is the company’s explanation, not a regulator’s technical definition.

How much capacity is expected, and when?

Google expects the Constellation work to add 890 MW before the end of 2032. Because the upgrades are planned, this is prospective capacity—not a report of completed work or current output. The announcement does not break the total down by plant or reactor, so it is not possible from this source to determine how much any individual unit is expected to contribute.

Google also says its agreements to revitalize existing infrastructure are expected to enable nearly 25% of a 5 GW domestic nuclear expansion goal by the end of the decade. Google attributes that goal to the U.S. Department of Energy. The 25% figure is Google’s characterization of its expected contribution, not a separately verified measure of delivered capacity.

Who pays, and what about other customers’ bills?

Google says the long-term offtake agreement makes it an anchor customer and that other grid customers will bear none of the costs associated with the upgrades. The announcement does not provide detailed financial terms or independent evidence establishing how project costs are allocated. Readers should treat the no-cost-to-other-customers statement as Google’s claim, not as an independently confirmed conclusion about utility bills.

How this fits Google’s other nuclear projects

Google’s announcement describes several efforts that differ in technology and project stage. They should not all be treated as uprates at operating plants.

Project What Google says it involves Expected result or qualification
Constellation plants in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey Upgrades at six operating plants, including work on 11 reactors 890 MW expected before the end of 2032; a forecast, not delivered output
Georgia Power Support for uprates across four reactor units Google reports approximately $900 million in expected ratepayer benefits
Duane Arnold Energy Center in Iowa Collaboration with NextEra Energy on restarting a shut plant Google says a restart could bring more than 600 MW online
Kairos Power and Tennessee Valley Authority Partnership on advanced reactors A distinct advanced-reactor effort, not an uprate of an existing operating reactor

The figures and descriptions in this table are statements in Google’s announcement; it does not provide the underlying studies, cost assumptions, detailed schedules, or audit methods for these expected results.

What the announcement establishes—and what remains open

The announcement establishes what Google and Constellation say they plan: long-term offtake, upgrades at existing plants, software deployment, and an expected capacity increase. It does not establish that the 890 MW will be delivered on schedule, independently verify the jobs or ratepayer estimates, or show through published financial details that other customers will incur no costs. Project-level engineering, licensing, and timing details are also not included.
