Michael Terrell has announced that his 19-year tenure at Google is coming to a close. Terrell, identified as the company’s Head of Advanced Energy, has not said when his departure takes effect, who will succeed him, or what he plans to do next.

What happened?

Terrell announced his departure in a LinkedIn post, writing: “After 19 incredible years, my journey at Google is coming to a close.” His post does not give a final working date. Energy Digital reported the departure on October 9, 2026, identifying Terrell as Google’s Head of Advanced Energy. Read Terrell’s announcement on LinkedIn; see Energy Digital’s report.

Terrell offered no details about his next move, writing, “As for what’s next: more to come!” The announcement does not name a successor or describe a change to Google’s energy commitments.

Who is Michael Terrell?

Terrell led Google’s development of advanced energy technologies and market solutions intended to power its global data-center fleet, according to his speaker biography for the Clean Energy Buyers Association’s 2026 event. The biography also credits him with helping shape Google’s 24/7 carbon-free energy aspiration and work on enhanced geothermal, advanced nuclear, load shifting, demand response, and policy and market structures. Earlier in his career, it says, he worked on decarbonizing Google’s operations and value chain and commercializing carbon-removal technologies. Read the CEBA biography.

What did Google’s advanced-energy work cover?

Terrell’s own retrospective describes a program spanning clean-energy procurement, generation technologies, storage, and ways to make electricity demand more flexible. These approaches play different roles: wind and solar generate electricity when resources are available; storage can shift energy across time; and measures such as load shifting and demand response adjust when electricity is used. Geothermal and nuclear projects are pursued as potential sources of clean, firm power. Their status and delivery timelines vary, so an agreement or planned project is not the same as operating capacity.

Terrell cited these areas as part of his work and Google’s efforts; his post is a personal retrospective, not an independent assessment of results. His announcement associates the work with clean-firm technologies including geothermal, nuclear, and long-duration energy storage, alongside grid-flexibility measures such as demand response and virtual power plants.

Projects reported by Energy Digital

Energy Digital’s October 9, 2026 report provides examples of the projects associated with Google’s energy program:

  • Enhanced geothermal: Google’s project with Fervo Energy in Nevada began delivering power in November 2023, following a partnership that dates to 2021, according to the report.
  • Small modular reactors: In October 2024, Google agreed with Kairos Power to support up to 500 MW. The report says the first reactors are expected online by 2030; that is a projected date, not a statement that they are already operating.
  • Potential nuclear sites: The report says Google backed Elementl Power’s preparations for three potential U.S. nuclear sites. “Potential” is important: the report does not describe three operating plants.
  • Geothermal capacity: In February 2026, Google agreed with Ormat Technologies on up to 150 MW, according to the report.

These examples include an operating project, agreements with future delivery expectations, and prospective sites. They should not be read as equivalent measures of currently available power. Energy Digital’s report.

What scale has Google reported?

On an Alphabet investor-relations call in November 2025, Amanda Peterson Corio, Google’s Global Head of Data Center Energy, said that since 2010 the company had signed over 170 agreements to purchase more than 22 GW of clean energy worldwide and had invested more than $3.7 billion in clean-energy projects and partnerships. These are Google-reported figures stated in 2025, not independently audited current totals. Read the Alphabet investor-relations transcript.

Is Google changing its energy strategy?

The available information does not establish that Terrell’s departure signals a strategy reversal. His announcement describes work across procurement, clean-firm technologies, and grid flexibility, while the company’s reported agreements and investments provide context for the program’s scale. Neither the announcement nor the cited reporting says how responsibilities will be reassigned or whether Google plans to change its commitments.
